In this latest in a series of conversations highlighting different perspectives on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Matt Kibbe talks to Sheldon Richman, author of Coming to Palestine and executive editor at the @libertarian Institute Richman argues that it's possible to feel empathy for the tragedy of the October 7th attacks on Israel, without having to support American involvement in the war or the policies of the Israeli government. While there is a tendency to equate any criticism of Israel or support for the Palestinian people with antisemitism, Richman points out that the Jewish community has itself been historically divided on the question of Zionism, rendering such accusations patently ridiculous.

Kibbe on Liberty is a weekly podcast with libertarian author, economist, and community organizer Matt Kibbe. As the president of Free the People, Kibbe has decades of experience in the libertarian political sphere, but in these troubled times he believes that open dialogue is needed to bring people together. This means being willing to talk, and especially listen, to those with whom we might not always agree, trying to understand perspectives that might otherwise be foreign to us.
Kibbe on Liberty's growing roster of guests includes politicians, economists, comedians, writers, radio personalities, activists, journalists, and even a magician or two-with topics of conversation ranging from current affairs to craft beer and the Grateful Dead. So grab a cold one, and settle in for the next hour of Kibbe on Liberty, mostly honest conversations with mostly interesting people.

Thank you for having Sheldon Richman on your show. He's very knowledgeable on the subject. It's a disgrace that these University presidents were railroaded. Elise Stefanik is a simple-minded, ignorant person. Thanks again.

I have no problem with Stefanik’s approach because it brilliantly illuminated the double standard of empathy in academia.

I’m aware of the history and none of its good when it comes to Zionism. I would think Occupation would be the antithesis of Libertarians

If everything they said was not the opposite of the truth we could comprehend the real meaning of WORDS.

This stinks of choosing a position, and justifying it by working backwards and ignoring anything that complicates your narrative. The Israeli Arab conflict is complicated because there are more than one actor at a time, and each side has internal conflicts and changes over times. IE. The early zionists were very divided about working with local Arabs; and the dominant view before the Arab Revolt of 1935 was to build with Arabs; they only lost support after the public massacres. . By the end he's just quoting Hamas propaganda. Gaza was "Free", and then Hamas started the war in 2007. The blockade is by both Israel & Egypt, and for good reason; and allows so much humanitarian aid that Hamas is still firing rockets after a 100 day siege.

I have listened to this podcast three times, and I too am angry about this conversation but I'm not going to unsubscribe. Mr Richman said "The Israeli-Palestinian history did not start on October 7" , And throughout the podcast, neither of you , Matt or Sheldon, mentioned even once the word "hostages". The Israel-Palestine conflict did not begin on October 7. but the current war Israel is fighting with Hamas DID start then. There are two highly relevant facts about Hamas that must be included in any fair assessment of both sides of the current war :: 1. There was a ceasefire in effect between Israel and Hamas on October 6, 2023. On October 7 2023, Hamas invaded Israel and proceeded to violate virtually every single Geneva Convention principle of wartime treatment of civilians. They attacked unarmed civilians, they employed rape, torture, child abuse, forced hostages to view the torture and rape and murder of their loved ones, mutilation of the dead, murder, and hostage taking. These are unequivocally war crimes. The purpose of the Geneva Convention is to "reduce the barbarity of war." It is hard to imagine anything more barbarous than Hamas's actions that day. And Hamas is certainly not allowing the Red Cross to come in and observe the treatment of those hostages, so we have no idea whether Hamas continues to violate international law. 2. Hamas has received billions of dollars from other arab nations since its inception in the 1990's, and rather than use that money to improve the lives of the palestinians, they used it to create miles of tunnels underneath Palestine's schools, hospitals, muslim mosques, apartment buildings and highways, so as to deliberately use the palestinian people as human shields. Hamas's deliberate purpose is to force the innocent non-military palestinians to bear the cost of any retaliation from Israel. Though Israel does more than any other country to try and reduce civilian casualties, Hamas's plan is working - the unarmed innocent are suffering the most and Israel is getting the blame. Hamas, and only Hamas, is to blame for every innocent death in this current wholly justified retaliation against the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust, because: Palestinian deaths are literally part of Hamas's plan. The way to stop this war immediately is for Hamas to release the hostages and lay down their arms. Yet neither the UN nor anyone else is making this demand. Instead they are demonizing Israel as if the Israelis started this conflict, and demanding that Israel stop looking for their hostages and cease the fighting. This is unrealistic, unworkable and unreasonable as long as hostages remain in Gaza. The history between Palestine and Israel is long and very convoluted, especially the truth about how the land was divided when Jews began moving in. It is much more complicated than even Mr Richman's version. I am not defending either party since both sides have engaged in unsavory and treacherous acts toward the other. But this conversation is excessively one-sided.. As much of the world, and most people on the Left, accuse Israel of being the bad guy here, we do not hear the UN , nor any other international or even American voices, condemning Hamas for war crimes. And the size and ferocity of the anti-Israeli response in the streets and campuses of America shows no recognition that Hamas has any responsibility for it. Ironically, 80 percent of palestinians still claim to support Hamas and approve of that grotesque attack on Israel on October 7. They democratically voted for Hamas over the Palestinian Authority in 2005. Hamas has refused them any more elections, as has the PA in the West Bank. However, I have also seen evidence that any Palestinian who publicly criticized Hamas is quickly "disappeared" from the streets. We certainly hear shouts in the streets and on campuses for wiping out Jews, but no one calls publicly for wiping out the Palestinians. And attaching the word "genocide' to Israel's actions is ludicrous when we know that the population of Palestine has increased five-fold in the last decades. Israel vacated all Israelis from Gaza in 2005. The people of Gaza are not a "captive" people unless you mean Hamas. When one sees the long list of countries that have forced Jews out over the last many thousands of years and in view of the memories of the Holocaust still within the lifetimes of some Jews, one has to understand their determination for a country of their own from which NO ONE can remove them.
