I'm from Kansas and once worked for the Kansas Wheat Commission. I learned that the most common variety of wheat in Kansas, known as Turkey Red, was brought here by Russian settlers. This wheat is generally used to make bread. Thanks for your interesting video.

There were two well documented Am Olam communities in Kansas; Montefiore (Pratt County) and Lasker (Ford County). An earlier one called Beersheba (Finney county) also had ties to Am Olam but wasn't really an Am Olam community.

My great great grandfather was a Jewish Rabi and was Ethiopian. I haven’t found a lot about the culture but I remember my grandmother who consider her self a African American women knew Hebrew. His wife was a Irish immigrant. This makes me want to continue my search again ❤

There are 2 sins for me, discrimination and greed. All others stem off of this big ol' Oger tree. This music is a catchy tune, but also a prayer to avoid much of what humans do, when they act typically human. Yes, Sly.. March 15th is 80 years old. He must have some interesting genealogy too. (GV, life on the planet, is obviously more complicated than that.) 😂

It would be interesting to do the family trees of the Jews who were involved in the Chinese communist revolution. People like Grigorii Gershuni, Grigorii Voitinski, Boris Shumiatsky, Michail Borodin, Adolf Joffe, Pavel Mif, David Crook, Sidney Rittenberg, Israel Epstein, Sidney Shapiro, Solomon Adler, Sam Ginsbourg, Michael Shapiro… while many of these were European Jews, who entered China specifically to coordinate the revolution there were also the Kaifeng Jews who had been Chinese for centuries. It’s been a subjective academic study for a long time, but most people don’t know much about it.

Every Farming Community that I am aware of either failed or needed to restructure for obvious reasons. Communities are created up of individuals. It's not logical to expect everybody (especially the next generation) to ALL be of the same ideologies and interests. Such actions are counterproductive to progress, incentives, and individual creativity. It doesn't surprise me that they went this direction. After all, they were mainly young and somewhat immature intellectually.

A lot of people in Am Olam and Zionism had come from Hassidic backgrounds, such as Sidney Bailey, so I imagine the history of the NY Hassidic community likely has a lot of links to the story of Am Olam and Zionism. But I wouldn't say that this story is the story of the NY Hassidic community, this story is really about the Jewish farming communities in the US.

I'm really impressed that you're dedicating an entire video to this episode in American Jewish history (fairly important but little known, actually). You're really not half bad at pronouncing all the really difficult to pronounce foreign words in Hebrew and Yiddish, but you keep mispronouncing my name and as a result it's (unfairly) like fingers on a chalkboard or a cheese grater. Yehoshua is just the Hebrew form of Joshua. It is pronounced like ye-HO-shu-wa. Not yeshua (that's the modern Hebrew name for Jesus). Also (while I'm commenting anyway), the Hebrew word for The Enlightenment is pronounced like HAS-ka-la, and I've only heard it used as a noun or adjective. It's just a synonym for capital E Enlightenment, meaning the pro-modernization philosophy in Ashkenazi Jewish communities once Napoleon abolished the ghettoes due to his Enlightenment thinking. But you're pronounciation of Yiddish names is really very good. 😁

@@GeneaVlogger I'm sorry, I've only started seeing your videos a few weeks ago. Mostly starting with your "reacts" videos. I hadn't realized, since only noticed that you had a bunch of Jewish history videos like Sam Aronow a few hours later today (after I wrote the comment). I've noticed that the accent and pronounciation for Yiddish words versus Hebrew words are kind of opposite (smush all the sounds together versus clear-cut consonants). I only learned myself about the Am Olam farms in high school, from a book about Jewish American legends, but it has a really big afterlife as inspiration for the secular Yiddish revival by modern Jewish hippies.

All good! I'm a very typical suburban American reformed Jew, so Yiddish is very rarely spoken. Funny enough, I actually find I know a bit more yiddish than other reformed Jews I've met, but I notice reformed Jews from the larger cities often have much more experience with Yiddish. Sam Aronow and I first met discussing this topic in the comments of a Bahador Alast video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2ugUjEk8dVY.html). @@GeneaVlogger That's really funny! I was raised the typical suburban American conserv-odox Jew in NYS, but as a 5-gen American I know about as much yiddish as a non-Jewish taxi driver in NYC. My two best friends in high school were reform Jews, who I met in the Boy Scouts. I've been researching my Ashkenazi Jewish family tree since Middle School (20+ years ago), when I had to do some basic research for a Hebrew school project. I'm terrible at languages, but I have an interest in it and my American wife used to speak fluently in Hebrew so I've been corrected enough through the years to start getting the pronounciation right. I guess part of why I quickly assumed that you weren't Jewish is that you pronounced my Hebrew name like all the non-Jewish coworkers I've had (whenever I attempt to explain that traditional Judaism is as much cultural as it is a religion). That is, when I try to explain that my full Hebrew name is Yehoshua Binyamin ben Avraham Mechel!
