zip fix plasterboard fixings are one of the best fixings available for fixing to plasterboard or drywall, they are inexpensive, easy to use and can hold a decent amount of weight. Originally these were known as Snap toggles, but the Zip fix fixings are identical. These are my number one choice for fixing to plasterboard, if I can’t locate a suitable stud to fix to.

I hope everyone is coping during this difficult time! I’m back on site next week for a few weeks, so I’ll get a break from the Mrs and kids 😉 Editing videos is very time consuming, one video that I filmed last week has over 8 hours of footage to edit down into a watchable video. The problem is that if I make a video too long people complain and if I make them too short people complain as not enough detail has been covered. I’m thinking that people have lots of spare time, so I’ll go for a longer video and that will have the added bonus of curing your insomnia 😊

I got a massive sink with drawers to install in my bathroom.. around 60kg (maybe more) empty - without feet.. The wall is double plaster board and ceramic tiles over.. backed by metal frame. The sink/drawers were meant to screw into concrete with 2 big screws in top corners. Would a plaster wall like this hold this? Would it help to back everything with a plywood screwed in multiple places to wall? Any suggestions? Thanks!
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 года назад
Ideally you would have put some 1" thick plywood in the partition to fix the basin unit to (but hind sight is a wonderful thing). To be honest I'm not sure if the plasterboard and tiles will hold that much weight over a period of time, especially if the drawers are full and if someone leans on it. The plywood option might work, or perhaps you could make some stainless steel feet for it (I know that might spoil the look of it), but if it falls from the wall there is a good chance that you are going to flood the house at the same time!

Used the snap toggles based on your previous videos for a heavy TV media unit filled with sky box, a couple of games consoles and a projector too... cannot recommend them enough! So simple to use and it feels like no amount of weight will bring it down. As you mentioned, the snap toggles/zip fix also have the added benefit of staying in place if you remove the bolt. Long term subscriber, first comment just to show my appreciation for your content. Thank you and hope your staying safe in these scary times

Great video and I agree these are fantastic plasterboard fixings. I’ve only ever used them the once and had a bit of a struggle….the cavity was full of insulation material! Had to poke it out the way and list of few of these fixings in the process. Eventually got them to work and they held very well. I look forward to using them in an empty cavity wall 😀

I've used these lots of times, insulation can be a real problem for many fixings! You can get an undercutting tool though, which is made by Grip-It (for the Grip-It fixing) I used it in this video- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--geib-6sa3M.html&t I've not used that for insulated boards with Zip fix fixings though- fave.co/3lKpK4g Mainly because insulated boards are normally fixed to solid walls, so I normally used a dot and dab fixing 👍

They are a great fixings! I still have some M10 ones left over from a cloakroom installation where the client wanted a cantilever handbasin fixed to a very poor lath & plaster wall. I fitted a sheet of 12mm Aquapanel to the wall with countersunk bolts and fixed the basin through the Aquapanel. The basin held my weight easily once it was fixed.

Thanks so much for all your helpful videos. Are these suitable for putting up Ikea Platsa floating cabinets on plasterboard walls or is essential to fix on to a stud? And does it matter if you have insulation behind the plasterboard, is there a better fixing you'd recommend for walls with insulation? Thanks!
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 года назад
It depends how much they weigh, including any additional weight once they are installed. I would always try to fix into at least one stud- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-glzwY76O0d8.html&t You could use these with insulation, if you removed some of it, perhaps using the undercutting tool from GripIt, you could even use the Gripit fixing, demo here- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--geib-6sa3M.html Thanks for the comment 👍

Good vid thanks for posting. 2 questions, what is a paramount partition ? What's the minimum centre distance you can use these? I need to mount a cupboard on a partition wall using the hanger brackets and cant use the wooden frame work, cheers
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 4 года назад
You are welcome. I have come across Paramount partitions a couple of times, but never knew what they were until some people commented on my videos and said they are paramount partitions. In the UK we often build stud partition walls using 3" X 2" timber, example here- www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/how-to/diy-building/build-a-stud-partition-wall This means that you normally have a 3" cavity, which leaves lots of room to get the largest plasterboard fixing in there. Paramount partitions are pre-constructed panels which only have about a 1.5" perhaps 2" cavity, which is filled with egg box type cardboard. The timber in them is spaced out really widely, This makes them difficult to fix to. Two videos where I have fixed to them in the past (not knowing they were Paramount partitions) can be seen here- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-awuqDum0ay8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--geib-6sa3M.html I'm not sure about the minimum centre distance, but the closer they are together the weaker the plasterboard will be at that point. I know some hanger brackets have holes that are close together, so it might be better getting some other brackets if the centres are less than say 50mm (or adapt the existing brackets) Thanks for the comment

Help! Great video but having just drilled my first hole (13mm as per instructions) and tried fitting an M5 Snaptoggle, I have discovered that the cavity is too shallow (appears to be only 30mm) to accept the toggle fitting. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative solution? The board appears to be 15mm thickness - would bog standard rawlplugs do the trick? The shelf to be mounted is an Ikea 'Lack', which uses a long bracket requiring eight holes and fixings, with a maximum load of 8kg (although in practice the load will be much less than this). There are spare fixing points in the bracket so I can ignore the existing hole and use another point. Thanks in anticipation.

I never put fixings that close together in plasterboard or even in solid walls, the last time I installed a hand rail, I got a length of timber the same length as the handrail, I think it was 3" X 1" and fixed that to the wall first, then screwed the handrail to the piece of timber. Not used that type, usually use the ones that spread out at the back. ICI jacket, I’ve had plenty of those, which site did you work on ?

These fixings are superb. I worked at ICI acrylics in Darwen, at their Chapels park and Orchard mill plants (I still sub contract there now as a maintenance engineer). It has changed names a few time since I started there. Ineos, Lucite international and now Perspex international ICI was a brilliant company to work for! Which sites did you work on? Thanks for the comment 👍

Ultimate Handyman Hi mate, I worked on Runcorn site for many a year, then moved to Northwich Site again with ICI, alas both have changed hands, yes ICI was a great company to work for, I now work as a gas engineer, self employed.

@@kevint3845 I went to Runcorn once in the early 1990's but only for a meeting (they arranged a coach for us). It was a huge site, if I remember rightly. A guy that I work with now used to subcontract at Runcorn (Vinny Davies), he is a great guy and sometimes tells me stories about Runcorn ;-) I bet you miss working there! You'll never be out of work as a gas engineer ;-)

Ultimate Handyman Runcorn site was massive yes, I had some great times there, yes I’m busy all the time, am even working in the bad times of this virus, people still need hot water 😉, I could write a book with my experiences at Runcorn site.

The Zip fix fixings, or snap toggles were one of the best performing fixings when I tested them- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ECDysfNhx_E.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cfb3vHeWb0M.html Thanks for the comment 👍

I take it that these would work on lath and plaster? Regular toggles seem to be the only recommended fixing for those and this seems like an extension of that concept but with smaller holes in the wall. Edit: Just saw you mentioned lath and plaster, brilliant lol.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 2 года назад
Yes, I've use these on lath and plaster before- they normally work well ;-)

@@ultimatehandyman Great - ever used the Fischer equivalent of these zip toggles? Not sure if they're great or just overengineered. Beyond that, any advice on how to use these well in lath & plaster? For example, do you always keep them vertical, or are you better off putting them horizontal (parallel to the lath on a wall) in order to avoid hitting the mortar keys? What do you do if you end up having the toggle rest on the keys? I know the mortar is a lot stronger than the surface plaster but I imagine this is a concern when mounting on it.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 2 года назад
@@Tephnos No, I've not used the Fischer ones- but Fischer normally make really good gear. I'd try and rotate them so that the toggle is in the opposite direction to the laths, as that is the way I had them and I hung a wall basin from them. The backing plaster is normally pretty soft and will compress against the laths, once the screw is tightened.
@Tephnos
@Tephnos 2 года назад
@@ultimatehandyman Thanks for the info, very helpful. Yeah, the Fischer ones look a lot more plastic-y, but still have some kind of metal brace for the toggle end. Was just wondering if that would compromise strength over the all metal ziptoggle. The main advantage I can see is that it comes in a 10mm size, so smaller holes in the wall if you're not mounting extremely heavy stuff. For the record, I'm wanting to mount a couple of ~6kg speakers (small 5" studio ones). As placement is dependent on math for best sound, you can't just shove them into studs. The only options beyond the ziptoggles would be an ugly wood batten on the wall, or tearing down a good chunk of plaster to put a batten in the wall. Both options I'd rather avoid if the toggles would do the job. What do you reckon, in your experience?

Much prefer using dewalt plasterboard toggles. Easier and quickier to use. Regularly use them for hanging radiators etc.

Now demonstrate using the same fixing with insulation behind & when plasterboard has been fitted with adhesive...
@ultimatehandyman

You would not use a plasterboard fixing for a dot and dab wall, you would fix to the wall behind- Rigifix- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xaYfs3lr1jI.html&t Or Core fix- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7xLhIPoO5gQ.html&t If you think fixing to the plasterboard is better than fixing to the wall behind, you could use the GripIt undercutting tool to remove the insulation, as demonstrated in this video when fitting a cabinet to a Paramount partition using Gripit fixings - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--geib-6sa3M.html
