How to sew a Lapped Zipper in a garment
Welcome back to another zipper tutorial. Today we are covering a lapped zipper!

I have just done a fly zipper following your method and this makes so much more sense now. I like this type of zipper. Better than having to press each seam allowances a different amount as I was taught many years ago.

I remember when I first started sewing and I would spend so much time just reading the cardboard instructions the zip came in! Seemed so hard. Not sure if practice is the key, but 50 some years later, I find zips so fun and easy! Love these tutorials you’re doing on all the applications. Definitely a win for so many.

Great tutorial. I’ll often just increase my seam allowance on lapped zippers - just as I do on some fly patterns - to make it less fiddley. It can be always be trimmed down after insertion if you want to decrease bulk.

Traditionally, finished lapped zippers are sewn with the lap facing your right as you view it from the right side of the garment. Talon zippers print instructions for lapped zippers in their packaging, and they are sewn with the lap facing right. Your method works, but I think I'll stick with my usual technique if I ever sew a lapped zipper again.but I'm usually using invisible zippers almost exclusively.

Handstitching the lining to the zipper makes the finish look very couture. Tried the lap zipper once before but found it too hard. Your explanation makes it seem easy, esp when you liken it to the fly zipper. Thank you!

Wonderful tutorial. Exactly the type of skirt I want to sew for fall. Some questions. What interfacing did you use for the waistband? How much ‘extra’ length did you add to the length of the waistband? How much extra length did you leave zipper above skirt as you inserted? I always wonder how one knows how much to leave sticking up? Remind me the model and shop where you got your sewing machine? I am loving how it operates. Want to save up for one.

For my interfacing, I used the Palmer/Pletsch Medium Perfect Fuse. I lengthened the waistband by 2" on each side (total of 4") which was way to much, but I would rather have extra to play with and then cut off than not enough. For the zipper, I line up the stopper on the zipper to where I want it to end. I always use a zipper longer than I need (this varies depending on what I have in my stash), but the length above is really dictated by how long a zipper I started with (I cut it off level with the waistband seam when I do trim it down). My industrial machine is a Juki DDL-9000b and I LOVE it!

What an adorable skirt! Would love to see it paired with a pussy bow blouse or ITS Zamora blouse…what will you wear it with? Really good tutorial.

It would be great with a pussy bow blouse! I think a classic button up or a solid turtleneck would be lovely as well. I’m also excited to pair it with some jackets and blazers!
