I'd like to make it clear that I really enjoy these games. I'm not trying to hate on them re-releasing them, the fact that they did shows how much they care about these games as well. I just wanted to address some issues with the re-release thus far and give my input on what I think would make it better. Thank you for watching!
@Covid Sufferer I'm sorry you didn't see this review first I wish you did. Is there anyway you can get a refund? Sometimes Steam let's you refund a game within 24 hours. What system do you have it on?
my mother moved me my brother and sister to a new country at 7 i had absolutely no idea what a video game was we were dirt poor but we stayed at my grandmas house and my uncle had a sega and i remember like it was yesterday the first time touching a game controller and the first game i ever played was Zombies Ate My Neighbors the mall level and that game is what made me fall in love with video games good memories
Its weird loading up the game and not hearing the old Konami intro I remember from back when I played the game a bunch in the mid 90s. Though I do appreciate that I can play the game now on my switch.
I've got both the original and re-releases and lemme tell you this....that game store did NOT know what they had I got it for about $40-$50 with the original booklet and game case the cartridge comes inside with no holes tears or scratches on any of it !!!! This is childhood memories for sureeee
The fact that they have a save state feature makes this game incredible. I remember back in the day. You couldn’t save! 😂. The not being able to change controls and the changing of music is not a good thing. Thanks for sharing that.
Screw save states, but also thank heavens i wont have to spend hours reaching boss level three only to be down to one life and getting rekt and having to go through all of it again. Also don't get me started on Dr. Tongue and his three extraneous phases.
The bare bone lack of screen size and filter options are completely lazy. Even if people don't use them; the option should be there; especially when playing on variety of TVs.
Definitely true. Steam users are saying if you put the game on full screen the game runs at double speed too so they have to play it in a small window. How could they screw it up that badly?
I seriously dont understand the CRT filter. You can't emulate those scan lines. They arent consistent all the time, every filter looks noticeably artificial, defeating the whole purpose, to me. Gotta play on real retro hardware or settle for crisp new clear pixels. Everything else is just like an obstruction to viewing the actual game. I dont get the desire or hype even half of 1%.
Exactly. You know when ur a kid and it's late at night where ur at a sleepover and you pop that game in and play it in the dark, you feel that chill up ur spine and... it just sucks. Hell I actually own the game I might as well play that.
For sure it is. That's why after an hour I did just that, with a full screen no less. It's just a shame the let down it brought us. But, I suppose it could have been worse.
Got this on Xbox, I finally beat it after never even getting past lvl 20 as a kid. Mainly because of cheesing save state lol. Your criticisms are totally valid and I agree. Could have been much better, I wanted widescreen and more control options
Thanks for reviewing this re-release. I've been looking all over to find someone to cover the game and it seems like no one is. At any rate I'm disappointed with how it seems this re-release has happened. Still yet I want to pick it up on the PlayStation 4 and even though the game was supposed to come out on the 29th, as of 12:30 p.m. Eastern standard Time it's still not up on the PlayStation store yet.
Nice review dude, I do agree with some of your Points, I think they could have added a bunch of additional features and some key things are missing, like controller rebinding. Regardless of this though, I'm just glad that they're reintroducing these games to a new audience who didn't get to experience them first time around.
Thank you for the kind words! I definitely enjoy Zombies Ate My Neighbors and agree that this is a great way for a new audience to enjoy the classics. I just hope they take some of the flaws into consideration to make it the best re-release they can.
I made a Tweet about the game and yeah I bought mines like a week ago and when the game finally let me play I'm not impressed but the game itself is still playable it's only the controls are different and the music is so high pitch up for both games especially Ghoul Patrol. They should really update the game and fix it exactly how it was on the SNES version and Genesis well mostly SNES. I'm not saying hate it, I love it so much and brings back memories and still rocks on the gameplay but it needs to be fix and done right I hope they'll understand whoever remade those two games.
@@FanmademunkvideosGummybear Konami probably would have done a great job. Loved what they did to the re-releases of the Contra and Castlevania anniversary collections.
@@nedbvv5126 steam said the same thing. It was on the steam store but it said not available yet. But the wait was no where near as long as ps4.. On steam it was only like an hour and a half late.
The title screen music fucking sucks. I’m avoiding this port. Zero love given to my favorite game growing up. Unreal. Thanks for the video, avoiding this! Definite cash grab.
@@jesusaraiza9787 I know, people are crying over nothing, it's fuckin menu music, from etc of the games no less, and besides the "menu song" plays a few times during regular game play
I mean with the Switch's portability, at least now it's possible to take it on the go. My only problem is that there's no option to play the Genesis version, which had the bloody game over screen.
1 of my fav SNES games! ZAMN! I'm glad it's a port. I wouldnt want nothing change at all in this game. I mean savestates would be nice & we got that. I remember getting ZAMN! At KBToys when I was little.
I love the original in Snes so I was eager to get this and show support (hope for a full remake or sequel). Second guessing it now... The cheerful music is from Ghoul Patrol's level 1, that abomination.
@@KaptainKlassic Feel the same way. I perceive they might have wanted to homogenize the package of the two games in justification of the bundling and the price tag, because they differ in tone and quality, but they did so at the detriment of the first.
I grew up with the SNES version, so I pre-ordered both the didital and physical editions for Switch. I have to agree with your feelings on the absence of the original title screens and themes. My biggest gripe is that the code BCDF has been de-activated, making accessing the bonus stage Day of the Tentacle difficult- you have to get a random bazzoka or potion drop in level 1 to access it. The button mapping is unfortunate, but at least on Switch you can make your own custom button layout from the system menu. I'd actually argue that the bonus material is decent for the price tag, at fifteen bucks for 2 games plus bonus material, I'm happy. All -in-all, I think you gave the game a fair shake.
Hey thank you for the kind words. I was hoping people didn't think I was coming off too hard on it, that's why I stated in the video that I wanted to at least get my opinions out so that everyone can decide for themselves if they think it's worth the 15 bucks or not. I didn't know about the bonus level being difficult to access either so thank you for sharing!
@@KaptainKlassic You came across like a straight-forward fan of the series just wanting what's best for the games, and I'm with you there. I tweeted at Dotemu about that code shortly after the game dropped, but forgot to mention the title screen. I felt bad because I am happy the game was re-released, but I can't help being disappointed by the small failings that hold this back. The code that takes you straight to the credits level is also disabled, though that's not so big an issue. The only other code I remember from back when, BLHR still works, if anybody wants to skip right to level 45!
@@adamwatson2914 Just missing the title theme music for Zombies, as the title screen is absent. It's been so long since I played Ghoul Patrol that I'm not sure if it had a separate theme for its title screen. I don't think it did, but if so it is also absent. Other than that the origial music is still all present, so far as I can tell.
@@gorgogrottan He did a good job I just wanted to point that out. But its good for someone to point that out. The Steam mention at the end seemed fine so I'm pretty sure its the same for you.
I loved the game BECAUSE it was pretty much just like the original and that is what I like about it. I got to play a game from my childhood with my children
Purple. ZAMN is a straight up port of the SNES version. Like it was said in the video, I was disappointed that there was no option for the Genesis version. I grew up with and prefer the SNES version, but the Genesis version definitely has its charm.
I loved this game. I’m just now realizing this exists. I almost bought it but thought I’d double check on public opinion but was sad to see how lazy the rerelease seems. Also, ppl seem to think this is coming out on psn. Is it? Seems they are two weeks behind already. I’d rather have this on psn if I could.
Thanks for watching, just glad I was able to inform as many people as I did. Tons of people have told me they almost bought it but then saw my video. Glad to help.
Wish i knew this before hand i ended up buying it and was kinda let down.I still rather just emulate it with shaders and widescreen applied via retrobat with retroarch.
you can change your controls thru steam. very easy to do.its game from 93 ya they could of done more but doing the things you asked would completly change the game.
I regret getting the limited run physical switch pack. This looks horrible. I can't even use the SNES controllers because the new controls are going to mess me up
Hi Kaptain Klassic what's up I've played this game for years on the original set ok and still have it today along with other classic games. If anyone needs to play this game personally the emulators or one of the those knock off retro consoles or better yet get the original decks & have a ball especially if you never played it before. Side note the game genie won't work on the original snes deck with the game unfortunately but it might with some of those retro consoles like the FC Twin or softmod the Wii with Super famicom emulator that has the save feature on it. As for Ghoul Patrol to me it just paled in comparison.
This game was released for nostalgia purposes, not to reinvent the wheel. The little hiccups will get fixed and those tiny thing's alone isn't enough to not buy the game. Everyone I know, including myself is having a blast playing this game again. We haven't had any issues thus far.
The change in music is a big problem. If you can deal with it than more power to you. I however grew up playing it and really enjoyed the soundtrack it had before.
This sounds bad, the iconic theme song and I remembered the Genesis version of that theme why isn't that in the game? Also it sounds like they didn't even take the time to properly fully emulate the game right.
Its because the genesis version is universally known as the bad one, the port would be useless as a much better version exists, the theme being missing is odd but they used ghoul patrol music which is why I'm so confused that everyone just calls it "happy music".
Nice review! You can pick this up on PS4 for 7.50 on sale for this month! I wish Nintendo would put out more SNES classic edition and nes classic I'm sure lots of people would love one! I have the NES classic and Sega Genesis mini 2 and love em!
I love the genesis mini 2 I have that as well. I was able to use project lunar to add a bunch of other genesis games to it including everything from the genesis mini 1. Glad you enjoyed the review thank you for watching!
People would still buy the game. Especially, if they grew up playing this game, like I did. I still have my old one, but many people do not have the console's and games they had when they were a child, so a re-release would be Hella convenient for them. I could care less about any missed additives, or extra shii they Could've put in the game. I would just play it for not only the Nostalgia, but the ability of playing it on a newer console
@@KaptainKlassic most games shoot up just a tad just because it’s a physical cart but others go up really high . I think this and double dragon will shoot up . I remember thimble weed park retail price was $40 now it like $200
For someone who stop emulating games after messing up 2 laptops. I think I will pick it up because I love zombie ate my neighbors. I'm disappointed to hear the criticism so I'm going wait and see more reactions. Ability to save is nice but I would have rather paid 30$ and get Alex the kid or crash insane trilogy style remake then a straight up port with flaws. I'd even pay 20 bucks for HD remaster with some bells and whistles.
Seems like with today’s technology it’d be easy, and cheap to smooth out the graphics at least a little ? I played streets of rage 4 and they had it to where you could play with a smooth nice background, or make it look all 16-bit and shitty for folks who just hate their eyes I suppose.
There's appeal to 16 bit and older graphics to a lot of people, myself included. I think including the option switch between old and new graphics is the way to go. It's a neat effect and can please everyone. They definitely should have included that in the Zombies Ate My Neighbors rerelease.
The changed controls are the worst part on top of not being able to change them. This is awful for someone who played the hell out of the SNES version. I Agree with everything you said. I guess since the games launch right into the game I can kind of excuse the title screen music. I can't even say there wasn't thought put into it because who the hell thought to change the controls up in the first place?
Thanks for making this review! As a long time ZAMN fan I bought the steam version and had to refund it after playing it for a few minutes. The sound didn't even worked on my pc and this happens to be a regular issue, some other people reported the games running at half the speed, or twice the speed. And yes the menu looks really cheap and it feels more like a stripped down version of the originals. By the way the "Disney music" that you mention is not a remake, is Ghoul Patrol music and it probably was playing on the ZAMN part because it is probably another bug on top of the rest of the things this port already does badly
You're welcome! I appreciate you watching. Yeah it's sad how many issues people are having with the game. It seems like the pc version has way too many bugs and the ps4 version still isn't even out yet.
I'm a big fan of zamn, tons of nostalgia pounded into it and thats what these games have to offer today. I spent the $15 just for zamn, couldnt care less about ghoul patrol. however, I feel it was lacking in departments and when compared to the available emulated rom you can squeeze into a *non specified maybe mini version of the snes,* its different. i felt like the controller response was different and bang for buck for 2 games, okay, maybe. but for the switch, they should have been released with a subscription, not a price tag, and thats just my opinion. i hate to mostly agree after my purchase it was a quick little cash grab. however, i dont want to sound ungrateful that its available for the switch. it was either no game or could have been even worse, THIS version for full price as its release when it was brand new as an snes cartridge. or even worse than that, maybe $30 for zamn by itself! end of rant. still love the game, but they could have done better.
Glad I didn't put a Limited Run order in on this. Was going to get the mega edition because I loved Zombies Ate My Neighbors... I'll just skip this and save my money. Everybody is saying how shitty these re-releases are. I wouldn't buy it over them changing the intro screen alone.. but there's a bunch of other questionable shit. Don't fuck with my childhood. Won't support.
Yeah I went to download it last night and it wasn’t there, gutted! This was one of my favourite games when I was a teenager back in ‘93 Hurry up and get it on there!!
These are for people who don't want to spend a lot of time and money to get a game they love. Not everything has to have the bells and whistles. Especially when one cost a lot of money to even get a hold of. Also, those saying they wanted the Genesis version. Have you even played the Genesis game? It wasn't great
It's only $15 for two games ported over, what did you expect? It's not a remake you knew good and damn well what it was going in. And as far as "fixes" from emulation. That's just you needing to git gud. Sound wise, the SNES has a garbage chip for it. I think everyone just got WAY over hyped for what is less than the price of most indie games.
