If you hook it up to a thermostat you don’t need any protection and you can put the hide right on top
@TheKiwibirder

I suppose it's a liability issue on the part of Zoo Med, but it's ridiculous to say never put the hide over the heat mat. Everyone places their reptiles' warm hides right over the heat mat. You have to. That's the whole point of having a warm hide. What they should say in this video is that heat mats should never be used without attaching them to a good thermostat!

I purchased the 20 gal snake starter kit and one of these heating pads was included. I just plugged everything in and I let it sit for about 30 minutes, but the pad doesn’t seem to be heating up at all. I didn’t see any on/off switches so I’m assuming it turns on as soon as I plug it in. Am I missing something, or does it take longer to heat up?

There is no on/off switch on our Under Tank Heaters. We recommend plugging them into either a timer or thermostat to better control the temps your habitat are receiving. Would it be safe to put it under the tank on a dresser? I have a dresser and I think it's wood but since it comes with the things you lift the tank up will that help or is it just not worth the risk of overheating? Right now I am stuck with a basking light for my gecko (and I know those aren't good, this is temporary until I get the money for a heating pad which will be after this weekend) but I am wondering if lifting the tank up will prevent the mat from overheating too much.. I plan to get the smallest one once I get the money for it. Please answer, I have been really stressed out about what's good for my leopard gecko. The temperatures are fine in his tank right now about 90° for him on his warm side. He seems to be doing fine with his health behavior, and he's still active at night.. I just want to make sure he has belly heat.
@ZooMed

Hi there! As with any heating device, proper air circulation is key. The included tank feet will help, but if you feel at all concerned about the surface your tank is sitting on, simply for the peace of mind I would suggest finding another way to rise it up a bit more to provide better airflow underneath. Hope that helps. Please feel free to contact our Customer Service if you have any more questions: zoomed@zoomed.com Take care. :)

@dumper87

I tried one. After about a week, it caused the bottom of the terrarium to crack all over, so the heater was the only thing holding the glass together. Switched to overhead ceramic heat after that.
@ZooMed
@ZooMed 5 лет назад
Hmm, sounds like a stress crack from heat encapsulation. You may want to switch to a more conductive substrate, or make sure you're not stacking too much decor or other heat resistant materials over that area where the heater was. Using the included pads to elevate the tank a little bit can also help to provide proper air circulation underneath the tank.

I have my sand boa set up with a (thermostat regulated, cause that’s vital) heating mat with reptile carpet and aspen shavings. Problem is: she does her business under the substrate, and it’s difficult to clean up when it soaks into the carpet. Given the thermostat, wouldn’t it be fine to pull the carpet out and make sure the thermostat probe doesn’t get jostled out of position so the heat doesn’t climb? I think it’d save time cleaning if I could wipe/scrape her refuse off the glass and sterilize the area instead of dealing with something I can’t really clean that well.
@ZooMed
@ZooMed 4 года назад
So to my understanding, you're asking if you could remove the carpet, but keep the aspen bedding over the under tank heater? As long as the thermostat probe is still regulating properly, and the aspen is still providing a buffer between the heater and your pet, that should work fine in theory. However, I would be extra diligent in monitoring your pet and their heating during this transition to make sure everything is functioning properly and your pet is safe. Hope that helps.

can i use the heat pad on the back of the tank if i have spray insolation on the inside of the tank on the back?
@ZooMed
@ZooMed Год назад
I wouldn't. You'll want to avoid anything that may incapsulate the heat so thoroughly, doing so may cause stress cracks in the glass or worse. Instead, I would suggest putting it on one of the sides where it is less obscured. This way it can transfer heat more efficiently through the glass while still having some "breathing room". Hope that helps some. Feel free to contact our Customer Service if you have any more questions: 1-888-496-6633 Take care.

How hot does an unregulated 8 watt mat get. Gonna have to do an experiment before attaching it to my aquarium for the humid hide. Gecko loves hanging out under the Arcadia overhead heat source.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 года назад
Heat mats should always be regulated by a thermostat. Although heat mats are also completely unnecessary. I’m assuming you’re using Arcadia’s deep heat projector? That’s the second best heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat would be the most natural and beneficial option. The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).

You need a thermostat. You plug the heat mat into the thermostat and it A’s a little prob you stick close to the heat mat. Then you set the needed temperature on the thermostat. If the heat mat gets to cold or hot the thermostat will fix it.

No, Under Tank Heaters are designed to be placed on a flat glass surface on the outer side of the terrarium. Avoid placing anything that could obstruct and compromise the UTH's contact with the glass. A temperature probe should be placed as close to the same location that your pet sits when utilizing the monitored heating element in order to get the most accurate readings. So what if it's hot in the summer, do snakes still need the heating pad? Also can it work if the heating pad is on the wooden dressers?
@ZooMed
@ZooMed 7 лет назад
Depends on how hot! You'll have to gauge their habitat and adjust accordingly to what you feel will work best for your pet and their habitat during summer hours. The ReptiTherm UTH is designed solely for glass, and should not be placed on wood. Do you mean on a tank that is on a wooden dresser? I would recommend ample room under the tank for proper air circulation to avoid any possible damage to the wood. For more info, please contact our Customer Service. Just to be extra extra sure, I can put the under tank heater underneath the tank with a stand that doesn't have a hole? By I mean it is a fully flat stand and it isn't specifically meant for a tank. I'm asking if it's fine to put the tank heater there as long as I put the rubber feet to help air circulation
@ZooMed

It really comes down to the air circulation. If you're concerned, I would monitor the stand for a bit when first using. I plan on using eco earth substrate for my leopard gecko, should i still put a carpet underneath the substrate?
@ZooMed
@ZooMed 4 года назад
That depends on the temperament of your pet, how thick of a substrate layer you are using, and your own personal preference. If your pet has a tendency to burrow to the very bottom of their tank and rest on the heat pad, the additional Eco Carpet may help. However, if that is a regular behavior, I would suggest reevaluating the ambient temperature of the tank. It may not be meeting your pet's needs, so they are trying to get the additional warmth by getting as close to the heater as they can. for an adult leopard gecko with reptile carpet as the substrate is it better to have it place on the bottom for belly heat or the side to provide warmth throughout the tank? @ZooMed
@ZooMed 7 лет назад
It really depends on how you're using it. If installed correctly, both should work fine. I have a sterilite plastic tub, best option for my set up to retain proper heat and temperature for my Ball. Would like to use ZooMed pad for it. Why do you say that it's not recommended for plastic tubs like Sterilite? I'm pretty sure your pad temperature will not be hot enough to melt plastic. How do we wash the tank after we put the heat pad on?
@ZooMed
@ZooMed 7 лет назад
The UTH is placed on the glass outside of the tank, so it shouldn't be an issue when cleaning the tank. Make sure to unplug all electrical devices before cleaning. If you're cleaning the entirety of your tank (inside and out), you may have to remove the UTH and replace it with a new one afterwards. For more info, contact our Customer Service: zoomed@zoomed.com

The ReptiTherm UTHs are meant to be applied only once. Removing it naturally deteriorates the effectiveness of the adhesive which can then be harmful if it were to fall or slip off. I can't recommend reusing it once it has been removed. Sorry about that.

Just got one today, I have the heat mat, and and a heat lamp but the temperature is only around 78°. this is for a leopard gecko. any tips on how to get it warmer?
@ZooMed
@ZooMed 4 года назад
It's important to have a thermal gradient in your pet's habitat so they can manage their own body temperature, so don't be too concerned if you're not hitting the temps exactly throughout your pet's habitat. If you're getting an ambient temp around 73-78º you should be fine. If you're looking to raise temperatures, it will depend on how your habitat is set up. I would maybe recommend including a humidity chamber in their habitat like our 3-in-1 Repti Shelter: zoomed.com/repti-shelter-3-in-1-cave/ Hope that helps some. Good luck!

Depends on how your habitat is set up and how thick your substrate layer is. You'll have to gauge yourself what works best for your pet and habitat. @ZooMed
@ZooMed 4 года назад
Heat mats are meant to be used as secondary heat sources, and can only raise local temperatures by small increments (depending on their size and wattage). Regardless of what you set your temperature gauge, every heating device has an output limit. If you require a higher temp, you'll either need more or stronger heating devices. Where your habitat is located can also affect interior temperatures. I would suggest checking out our heating care guides and heating products on our website for more info: zoomed.com/ Hope that helps.

It isn't recommended placing the Repti Shelter, or any humidity chamber, directly on top of an under tank heater. Doing so risks creating something like an oven! We generally recommend that fixtures be placed outside the habitat, but if that isn't a possibility, the Hoods include a Suspension Kit if you need to hang it in some other manner, just make sure it is secure and the appropriate distance from your pet. I should also note that UVB will naturally bleach wood over time, so be aware of that when setting up. Hope that helps.

Is the forest floor bedding considered light weight substrate or heavy substrate? Also we have the Exo Terra tank which has “feet” so to speak already built in with the frame, plus I was going to add the included rubber “feet” so do I still need to use an open top stand? How much room is needed between the table and the heat mat?
@ZooMed

Forest Floor would be a light weight substrate as it isn't as dense as some other substrates and allows heat to pass more easily. Having a water source or some Sphagnum Moss in your habitat can also be great ways to help keep humidity levels up. See our website for more info on these items: www.zoomed.com As for the Hermit Crabs, every animal is different and it's hard to say what is causing their behaviors without firsthand experience.
