As with any filtration system, it'll take a few run throughs to start seeing results. New tanks especially have a lot of excess dust and residue from all the items in the tank making contact with water for the first time. Keep running the filter as instructed and you should begin to see results soon enough. Also, make sure that your filter is the appropriate size for the tank, and take into account how many turtles you are keeping. More turtles may need a bigger filter to keep up with them.
Thanks for this video. No offense, but the directions that come with this pump are horrible. It doesn't even say to put the carbon in the container. I had to watch the video to verify. I have never used a filter before so I was clueless. yes, I am stupid, but still, the directions should indicate to put the carbon in the container.
This is a good filter, but when you change your tank (around once a week) I recommend cleaning out the entire filter as well. And scrub with a toothbrush. Mine gets very dirty in that 1 week period and by the weeks end it's just pumping dirty water back in. I have it in a 1 turtle tank with about 8-10 gallons of water. Also if you turn it on and it sounds like a rock is in the propeller and it isn't working, try to take the propeller out and put it back in with a hard push. I've found that if you don't push the propeller in hard enough it gets loose.
I got this filter for a 10 gallon tank TEN GALLON. This filter is supposedly for upto 30 gallons and so for it has been no different from having no filter at all the water gets filthy after just two days so i have to clean it myself every three days.

Hi there. Yes! Zoo Med replacement Carbon is available for order in the store section of our website (zoomed.com), or from most pet retailers that carry Zoo Med. Hope that helps. Take care.
Hi Zoo Med! Are the replacement Carbon still available (5 years later...haha)? I can't find them on the site or at my local pet retailers. If not, what do you suggest for replacement?
Hello great video by the way quick question tho i got this same one but the plug outlet is different then the video and it won’t fit in any plug any solutions ?
Hmm, you may have ordered or received a version designated for a different region. Please contact our Customer Service and they should be able to help you out in some way: 1-888-496-6633 Hope that helps.
does this filter stay on all day or does it have to be turnned off ? im jearing noises coming from the filter and somtimes it shoots the water really high , ive seen it do it already 3 times
It should be left on as long as there are animals using it. If you think there is something not working properly, please get in contact with our Customer Service: 1-888-496-6633 or by email at: zoomed@zoomed.com Hope that helps.
Is there a specific ZooMed replacement carbon I need to use for the 318 filter? Everywhere I have looked only has 501 replacement carbon and I wanted to know if that was okay to use.
Our online store to purchase replacement carbon is currently under going maintenance, but you can contact our Customer Service to purchase replacement carbon. You can contact them here: zoomed@zoomed.com Hope that helps.
every couple of days it is getting dirty what do you mean about a few run throughs do u mean a couple of filter changes anyways is the filter supposed to take the dirt in the filter or what please reply as soon as you can zoomed thanks
hey zoomed, I have had your turtle clean 318 for about 3 months now. And I ran out of the black pellets you put in the small part of the case. Do you guys know anywhere I could get more of them for my filter? Thanks!
what is the best carbon to use for replacement? There is a crystal type carbon as well what is that and is it just as good as the black carbon. All of these are in Petco website.
Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. that doesnt make any sense. The filter will filter out water not an empty tank. It should advertise the amount of water it can filter not the size of the tank
Hi. First off, great video, definitely is going to help with future upkeep. Second of all, my filter seems to be spitting out water or air, I can't really tell. It appears to still be doing its job fine, but the sound of constantly trickling water is less than desirable. Suggestions?
Hmm, there might be an issue with the suction. I'd make sure there aren't any kinks in the hoses, or I'd maybe try turning the filter off, filling the canister to the very top with water, and then turning it on again. If that doesn't help, try contacting our Customer Service and they should be able to help in more detail. They can be reached at: 1-888-496-6633 or by email at: zoomed@zoomed.com Hope that helps.
What about fir the blue sponge cleaning I clean mine 1 a month but it'd filled with food that won't come out , I will feed my turtle less so it dosent happen again but how to deep clean sponge?
Just warm running water and a lot of cleaning unfortunately. Removing excess food before it gets to the filter is really the best way to avoid that type of buildup. Replacement sponges can be found on our website: zoomed.com/online-store/ Hope that helps.
Hi this filter I got with the complete set. I used it for a month and it worked beautifully, no problems and kept the tank nice. It stopped doing its job so I cleaned it, and replaced the filter. Now it’s making a sound and not filtering the water at all. Like when it’s filter water you can see the water coming out and it’s not doing anything but sitting there and making that sound. What’s wrong with it?
Hmm, I'm sorry to hear that. I recommend reaching out to our Customer Service and they should be able to talk through some things you can try. They can be reached at: 1-888-496-6633 or by email at: zoomed@zoomed.com Hope that helps.
I'm upgrading from a 20 to a 55 gallon tank. I have the turtle clean 50 now, would this be a good filter to add to the bigger tank to help circulation/filtration? I have 55 gallons of water in the tank. Thanks.
tricktaylor1983 It could work, but it's difficult to say without knowing how the habitat is setup and what you are keeping. If you feel it is underpowered for your new tank, I would suggest upgrading to our Turtle Clean 75 filter: links.zoomed.com/tc-75 Hope that helps.
I'm sorry to hear that. Please contact our Customer Service and mention the missing parts and they should be able to help with replacements. They can be reached at: 1-888-496-6633 Hope that helps.
We recommend changing the carbon and rinsing the sponge about once a month. Results may vary depending on the quality of the tank and how much waste is being produced. And yes, this filter can be placed horizontally. Hope that helps.
If it's being used with the appropriate amount of water, then yes this should work fine for Firebelly Newts. Make sure the water pressure is adjusted accordingly to accommodate their size. See our website for more info: zoomed.com
The filter in this video is designed to be completely submersible. If you're referring to one of our other filters, please contact our Customer Service for more details: 1-888-496-6633
If it's appropriate size Filter for your tank, then yes it should work fine for your aquarium setup. Check out our website for a complete list of our available filters and more info: www.zoomed.com/
While not its intended purpose, it is certainly possible. We would first recommend our Waterfall Kit: links.zoomed.com/wk-10 The instructions may also help you set up your own. Hope that helps. Take care.
While filters do help keep your aquarium clean, they won't eliminate the need to clean your aquarium completely. Regular upkeep of the aquarium and the filter itself is still recommended.
It'll depend on their unique size, but yes it's possible. They'll more than likely need to be upgraded to a larger enclosure as they grow to adults though.
I put this filter in a 1 gallon Aquaeon Edgelit Rimless Glass Aquarium with Saltwater, livestock and sand and a coral so far and a few hermit crabs, bumblebee snails and a shrimp and a tiny chocolate chip star fish and it’s doing great..Demensions are 6.5”L x 6.5W x 7.5”H The flow is nice..close off the valve all the way and point up the connector piece that hooks to the valve ..Works brilliant.. I’m shocked that it works that well in a 1 gallon saltwater tank 😆
H2O_2002 If the filter is placed away from the sand and not touching it directly, it should work fine. Review the included instructions for more details on how to set it up.
Diamond23 Hello, Please contact our customer service department via email at zoomed@zoomed.com or by phone at 1 (888) 496-6633 so that they can troubleshoot your filter and help figure out what's going on with it.
Hi there. Was the filter installed recently or is the tank new? New filters and tanks tend to have a type of setup period where the tank looks dirtier before it starts to get clean. This is a result of the Filter stirring the water around but the healthy bacteria that develops naturally in the tank and filter hasn't grown enough to help in the cleaning process. This should fix itself over time with the water becoming clearer and clearer. It's also important to consider the type of pets you're keeping and the placement of the filter. The filter could be the recommended power for your sized aquarium, but if you're keeping pets that make a lot of waste, you may want to upgrade to a stronger filter. Also, placing the filter in a place that may hinder water flow may also make it harder for the filter to operate. Hope that helps. If you're still having issues, please reach out to our Customer Service and they should be able to help in more detail. They can be reached at: 1-888-496-6633 Take care.
It could, but I would suggest something smaller like our Micro Clean 304 or Micropump 104 for a tank of that size. See our website for details: www.zoomed.com
I'm sorry to hear that. Please contact our Customer Service and I'm sure they can help in some way: 1-888-496-6633 or you can purchase replacement carbon on our website: www.zoomed.com
hi zoomed i have a really big problem i had got the turtle clean 318 filter yesterday and my turtle also yesterday so my tank is complete but the turtle clean 318 filter is in and on but it seems like it is not cleaning my tank so my tank gets dirty all the time and i think it is just pushing the dirt around and my does not get cleand with the filter please help me zoomed!
Every tank is different, give it time and it will eventually start showing results. Filters catch debris and waste, while creating healthy bacteria. Contact our Customer Service for more details. They'll be able to guide you through making your filter work the best for your tank. They can be reached at: 1-888-496-6633 or by email at: zoomed@zoomed.com Hope that helps. Take care.
I brought this filter for over 50 dollas thinking that was goin to be better than the smaller one that i had, big mistake! after 2 days of using it ina 10 gal tank the water went completely white and slimy, big waste of money
All new filters have a period called 'new tank syndrome', where the filter has to adjust to the ecosystem of your tank and build up the healthy bacteria necessary to properly filter the dirt and grim. During this period, your tank will more than likely appear dirty like you've described, but given enough time, you should begin to see results (assuming the filter is the appropriate power for your sized habitat). Hope that clears up your concerns. Please feel free to contact our Customer Service for more info: zoomed@zoomed.com Take care.
