Got myself one of these and it is great! I'm just a bedroom player but there is so much in this little box that it will keep you coming back for ages. It's well built and very intuitive to use, and for £169 it's an absolute bargain.
I have a zoom g2.1nu, pretty old one, and that is great for gigging, still using it to this day. This pedal is more than enough for live gigging and bedroom playing.
This is a remarkable device, regardless of price. The interface is completely intuitive, it’s very well made - solid! Super flexible and Zoom’s Guitar Lab software for your computer is really nicely designed. Very easy to update your board and configure with new patches or effects. Best of all is that Zoom continues to push out new patches and effects years after the release. I love the format - acts like three pedals on a pedalboard. Very easy to use on the fly. Sure - there are individual pedals with drippingly gorgeous tones at heinous prices that kill this device in sound, but as a complete package with an incredible array of effects this product is on its own. The remarkable price is just the cherry on top.
Greetings, as they say. Just wondering whether this pedal works well when connected to a basic combo (or otherwise) amp. I presume one needs to switch off all the amp and cab sims in that case. So I guess what I am asking is if it works well purely as a bunch of effects pedals.
Looks like nobody answered you on this so the answer is yes I use it with my combo amps. I even use it with a fender acoustasonic amp so I can play my electric guitar with effects, drum machine, while also singing through a Mic into the Fender amp.
Have been using this for about 2 years. One of the best purchases of my life. Continues to impress me as more effects are constantly made. It’s super well built and feels like a professional piece of equipment for a low price.
CaptAnderton Well, you nailed it. And now, i can't help it, but ask from you, to suggest to Rabea and Matt, do a "Sounds Like The Cult without busting the bank" episode. Cause very few can afford a Gretch White Falcon (am i right?), for a similar sound to The Cult's. Maybe use part of todays rig, like that Zoom unit. Keep it up Cap. You guys are what i watch, during most of my free time.
There is so much you can do with these - drum patterns, loopers, amp models, cabs, and effects galore! I love to experiment with "re-ordering" the effects in the chains to see how that affects the sound of the patch. Truly an amazing device. When I gig I plug mine direct into the PA. No amp or pedalboard needed😀
I bought this from The Captain today. My first pedal, and I doubt I will ever need any other pedal. Far exceeded all expectations. Thanks Captain Anderton!
@Everything I have had it for over 2 years now ( all my vids within 2 years have used it ) and I love it. I have used it through full on cabs on stage ( small venues maybe 200 people but still on stage) and in my room a lot. I personally dony use any of the presets, but have made my own that are right next to each other, named to quickly switch between different sounds, and for certain songs I have named that slot as the song so i know to use that slot for that song
@@waterproof4403 it is really good. I am now defo moving up a bit, I have 4 guitars and now I am getting very nice amps, the amps in an analog amp are always gonna be better than any pedal, but the zoom does just sound incredible, and is so easy to use. What guitar are you getting?
Chappers and the cap'n are such great guitarists in their own rights. Made me happy to see the cap pick up that strat! theirs no such thing as a bad style of playing. They play what makes them happy and that fucking rocks man.
The cab simulations are insanely good on this product for this price. There's an mic on/off switch allowing you to run them though an amp or straight to a PA / audio interface and it works just brilliant. I use its big brother (G5n) and it's fantastic when you can't carry an amp with you, the PA will do the job. Thank you for the video guys, great one, as always! Greetings from Berlin.
I own one of these and I can tell you that the real gold is found in tweaking your own patches. The effects are outstanding and the compression is stellar. I use it with my katana's front end and it works well with the katana's effects. This unit rarely gets the kind of respect it deserves in demos because the truth is it outperforms units costing three times as much
I just got one of the new VOX MV50 High Gain Lunchbox amps. It has great distortion but no real clean tone. If I wrote my own patches could I just use reverb delay and chorus in a patch into The front of the amp can I use it w the amps distortions
This is a fabulous device. I hardly looked at the manual, and had the hang of it in 5 minutes. IT IS INTUITIVE. Easy. After 10 minutes and a few glances at the manual, I could do everything. Very easy to use, wonderful to edit on, download the firmware upgrade and install (EASY) and you've got a pile more effects beyond what it came with. The software allows you to move patches and effects where ever you want, although editing must be done on the unit. I paid $125 new for mine- it's 21st century, and maybe the last effects box you'll ever need. Oh, and the sound quality is stellar. Want to run on a battery? Simple, I ran mine on a single 9 volt rechargeable by simple hooking up a plug toa battery. Want longer battery power? Hook 2 or three up in series, or use AA batteries. (Or just use the included AC cord- big deal, you have to plug in your amp don't you?) This is an outrageous device for the money. Three thumbs up. :-) No frustration at all, exactly the opposite. This is going to be the #1 effects unit in the world, mark my word. See my youtube videos for lots of fun: ru-vid.com
There is FAR more to them then just a bunch of presets. They didn't show much of the expression petal or how detailed you can dial in any sound. These things are awesome for the price!
The birds preset was simply beautiful. If you guys are skipping around the long video I HIGHLY suggest you check out 15:35. I've never heard such a studio sounding preset with no post editing sound so great.
I frequently whinge about Chappers forever using shred - but all credit here to The Man, all his demos and styles perfectly fit the FX being covered. Especially great playing at the start. One of the best Andertons uploads and very persuasive. Good job.
I love zoom effects processors. I've had and used my g1xn for 7 years and it has served me very well in that time, especially since most of that time I was too young to get a job and pay for other pedals. The ultimate beginners introduction to guitar effects
I have an older Zoom G3 (without the pedal part). I think it's great. I love the rhythm (drum generator). Sounds great, IMO. Zoom quality is really nice. I also have the Zoom B10n Bass combo pedal, too. Somehow, mine doesn't sound as good as when Rob plays it :):):)
It's nice to see Zoom making sturdier units that don't cost an arm and a leg now. I use to have a Zoom 3030 that I ADORED!!! That thing had some of the most unique guitar tones out there and even had an expression pedal. Unfortunately it was made of cheap plastic and after a few years of heavy use it eventually broke on me which really sucked as they had stopped making it at that point. Thankfully it paid for itself in great gigs and recordings that I still listen to with great nostalgia and memories of that little Zoom unit. Before that I had the original Zoom 9000 "wonder wedge" that as Rob and Lee mentioned, didn't sound great, but was extremely innovative at the time. These days I still use my old Zoom 5000 driver pedal which I regard as one of the finest distortion pedals for heavy metal ever made. That fine pedal is built like a tank thankfully. I also still use in my home studio, the Zoom 9150 Valve DSP rack unit which is a fantastic but little-known preamp/FX processor. The clean sounds generally suck on it, but the distortion tones are out of this world. After hearing the sounds of this unit on this video, I may just end up getting these but only if the direct sounds via USB sound decent. Often I just want to plug in and record into my computer without fussing about with amps, microphones, and mic preamps, especially when the muse hits me suddenly. So this unit might fit the bill. But I'm sad that they didn't show the direct sound. Also they didn't mention if whether the drum sounds at the beginning were built into the unit or not. So yeah, they could have improved on the video by showcasing those things. But aside from that it was a great video.
Massive like for the video. Some of the music that was played in here, was the best I've heard in a long-long time from any artist. My first encounter with a ZOOM multi effect goes back to some 25 years. When we all were trying to play guitar at the university and one of my mates got hold of one. We played the hell out of it.
I smell shootout! Zoom G3Xn v. Boss GT1... :D I gave up on Zoom years and years ago, but this one looks like it has one of the most intuitive interfaces on these kind of multi-effects units I have ever seen. Gotta try it now... Definitely need to hear those presets in person...! But ATM, this one at that ridiculous price seems like a no-brainer. Just another tool in the arsenal...
This thing is great! I just got the g3n as a wedding present and I’m really happy with it. Eventually I’d like to upgrade to a model with the pedal, either the g3xn or the g5n, but honestly the g3n does everything I’d like a pedal like this to do. My only comment on it is some of the presets and effects are way louder than others. It has a master volume, but you want to set that so the bypass is the same volume as your amp, so you can’t mess with that too much. Instead, each patch has an individual master volume that can be accessed through patch settings. So you have to take the time to go through every setting and adjust the levels to even it all out, which consists of turning most of them down a fair bit. That also means every new patch you create has to be balanced with all the others. So you have to spend a bit of time dialing in the levels with everything. Once you’ve don’t that though, this pedal really shines and can’t be beat for the money.
Love the work you do guys. I just picked up the g5n....two weeks ago. Been playing since the 80's, and have gigged, up until last weekend, with an orange tube amp into a Marshall built quad box., with a massive pedal board of tasty commercial and boutique stomps. So what's changed? The amazing zoom pedal board, direct into the PA delivers a quality of tone, and a reliability of mix, that I have struggled to achieve from venue to venue. Once properly set up (ditching most of the factory patches), I've gone from a die hard tube head, to a complete convert. What does it deliver? Simple 3 plug gig setup. Power. Guitar in. PA out. I'm done and ready for sound check. Love it. Also, something that is often missed when this zoom range is discussed. All the cabs, both built in and downloaded, feature a MIC setting, which is actually an impulse response. Sure, you can't import your own IR's, but really, with the range of cabs available, why would you want to. All I can say is if you play, get one. A G3n or a G5n. This thing sounds so good, is so easy to use, you will play more, with more confidence, and it will make you a better player. :)
Have owned one for several years now. Over the last year I’ve mostly been using just pedals, but I dusted my zoom off to pair with my solid-state Peavey and I was just floored at how good it sounded.
I can't believe you guys didn't even show off the expression pedal or looping feature. Those are the two main things I'm interested in buying this thing for. Obviously tone quality is very important but beyond that I want to know if the looper is practically utilized and if the expression pedal is decent.
Hey rob, I know you probably hear this a lot, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the things you do, spending hours of your time making videos, shredding with dorje and jut being an amazing person, you inspire me everyday to be a better person and to push my playing to the next level. Thank you, you've also got quite the following in Canada and I've gotten all my friends addicted to your videos, thanks again sir for doing the amazing things you do :)
Joe Satriani's Cryin' is recorded with Zoom 9002, and that song has one of his best tones ever! So there you go about 9002 sounding shit! XD Great stuff as always, Anderton's
This was one of the best videos for the zoom G3nX. After watching this video I knew I had to have one of these pedals. I decided to purchase the Zoom G3n from Andertons because there were not any in the local stores in MN US. This pedal arrived in 3 days which I was shocked at the speed. This is one of the best purchases I've ever made A++.
Years ago I had a Zoom 2020, and the best thing that can be said about it is that after I gave it to my friend's son he used it as part of his start up rig to launch a career as a professional entertainer that continues to this day ;-) I recall a mate buying a 9002 in about 1991. I went out and bought a Boss BE-5M, which I wish I still had... Glad to see that they have their act together these days.
Not sure what Zoom was thinking here. Depends on how you want to use this, but for me it's a big step back from the original G3/x. No balanced out, no passive active/switch, no pre/post switch, no ground switch. Various control switches from the top panel are now menu driven. For me (home use only) no dedicated headphones means I can't use it with a Trio+ (I know, there are phone on the Trio+, but they are shocking). A lot of the effects, amps, cabs use more than one 'unit' (the three little screens). The various looper modes occupy either one or two units - and you can't change a patch during looping, so you have to use the looper in stomp mode and accept that you'll only have one or two effects available to switch on and off. All of this means that in stomp mode (ie. basic WYSIWYG mode) it's almost useless. Positives... it looks nice. Mine is going back, exchanged for a Digitech RP360, whose only limitation for a bedroom player is that the drums won't play during looping... enter Mr Trio.
There's a lot of gear snobbery and unnecessary preconceptions about gear throughout the guitarist community. Despite this, I've never heard anyone with a bad word about Zoom pedals. Yes they eat batteries, but value for money is mad with these pedals. Still use an original G3 on my board and in the effects loop and it does it's job perfectly.
Collwyn Thomas - Palmer My impersonation of a typical gear snob: your tone sounds great, what are you using? Thanks it's a Zoom multi-effect actually (Gear Snob) I figured as much, I was being sarcastic your tone sounds so fake and digital.
Just got the G3n yesterday and started tweaking it. Gui is fantastic for me. Totally intuitive, and its astounding what they can pack into this beast! WOW. LOVE IT. I am really looking forward to programming the daylights outta this thing. Sounds amazing, and to be able to chain things like real analog pedals would do, and having the gui show that? Just awesome!
These new Zoom pedals are very solid (heavy weight, metal boxes), and the LCD screens are easy to see in a live situation. I really like most of the patches, and for the price, they have to be the best bang for the buck on the market today.
Hey guys, started watching your channel a couple of months ago. On some of these pedal videos, half the time Rob plays a guitar that's WAY out of most people's price range, and it makes me wonder how that affects the sound. Could he play with maybe some more mid-range guitars when doing videos solely about pedals? Wouldn't that make it kind of more equalized and accessible for us mere mortals?
I'm still using my Zoom Gfx8 after all these years. Still can't bring myself to get rid of it as it's such a good piece of kit and still going strong for what must be 15 years.
dude it sounds nothing like she sells sanctuary even I can tell that , and to be fair to me (who isn't a massive simple minds fan) it's not all that different .
After watching this video, I immediately bought the bigger model G5n and after playing with it for only a few hours, I can already say this is definitely worth the money. Easily the most intuitive and easy to navigate multi-fx unit I've ever tried. Presets sound pretty good and making your own patch is easy if you prefer that method. The only negative thing I can say is the high gain sounds aren't amazing, but I'm sure that after a few more days with it, I'll be able to tweak it a little more and hopefully get a passable metal tone out of it. 9/10 Would recommend.
I just bought a Fender Bassman from a guy off Craigslist and he wanted to include this unit and an attenuator as a package and I’m so glad I remembered this video. What a great piece of gear for the price.
There seems to be a great hype. I have seen dozens of reviews of the GT-1 and to me it seems this one here sounds way better. Also the Gt-1 only has the 3 switches, which is extremely limiting for a multi-fx unit.
To be fair, the GT-1 has had loads of attention from the moment it launched despite being rehashed tech from the GT-100. Zoom updated the G series long before that and got no attention from the bigger channels for months despite basically going back to the drawing board and starting from scratch with all new modeling. Zoom deserves a little bit of the limelight without the GT-1 stealing all its thunder.
yeah, but if i want to decide which one to buy, i'd love to see the same people reviewing it. because i don't really care about the little price difference, as long as i know which one does the job for me.
Fair enough. I just feel sympathy for Zoom as they've largely been overlooked despite offering completely new modeling. The GT-1 is like a hybrid of the GT-100 and the ME-80, both of which have been out for a long time (when it comes to digital pedals). I would personally like to see the next generation of modeling tech from Boss, Digitech, Vox etc and I think the GT-1 has received more attention than it deserves. I'm not saying it's a bad pedal. Just saying I'd like to see things move forward.
Been using the G3xn for a year now and as you tweak every patch like increasing treble or lowering gain its like a new sound it can produce, you just need time to experiment on it
I'd put a regular G3n or Boss gt 001 in my pedalboard before any modern modulation or delay pedal. They are able to achieve just so much at a very affordable price. The amp modeling on this one is not too shabby either.
Yes, I totally understand why people like real analog distortions, but chaining together a bunch of digital stompboxes just seems like a waste of money when you could buy a digital multi-fx pedal.
Rob it´s a pleasure to hear you playing ``normal´´. In the last years/months you got so djent & dropped, in fact it seams like they hide your skills, harmony, ``grace´´... your palette of flavours. You have a touch of EVH chord inversion style seasoning on your playing, when going to the ``dark side´´ (djent & drop tuning), it get lost. A shame. Maybe it´s the fashion of the day. Anyway you still rock man.
I've bought loads from you guys and I love these videos that you do BUT they often highlight the dirt and metal side of things and some of us want great clean-ish effects and amps
For anyone watching in 2020, these zoom pedals are still awesome, theyve added firmware updates, patches, and a software editor so you can edit or manage everything from your computer. Highly recommended!
How does it fair against boss me80 or 25, boss gt-1, line 6 lower end models... Etc? Btw I'm a happy zoom user from 2015 with the zoom G1XON. It just died yesterday cause I was careless and dropped it, feeling guilty af.
I was considering getting this for my Katana 50 and then I find this video. I was considering changing my 50 for a 100 so I could use the GA-FC and expression pedal at the same time, but it will be less expensive to just get this instead.
I think Rob has been definitely right lately saying to Captain he should play some too. Even if it's a product review and the sound is something like Zeppelin! It gets boring with Rob just playing through patches over and over again even if he's great. He sounds a lot more fresh every time Captain has had his spin around. This video showed it too, Chappers likes to fiddle with the knobs too :D but he shouldn't start playing every time Captain starts to say something. Or you need to start making captions because it's happened a lot lately that Captain just opens and closes his mouthg without sound. And damn, is Captain on top of his digital menuing or what?! Has he studied the manual through and through? Nothing like jumping to demonstration and learning the digital menus for the first time. But enough with talking, now have at you! Good job with the 2017 released videos! Like this was very, very good video. Dull sounds became good sounds after tweaking, got through features and usability, had sound tests, had fun and story time was nice stuff too.
Would this be a good unit to run thru the effects loop of the tube amp? I want to be able to use reverbs, delays and mod effects in any order I want. Thoughts?
I have been putting a $100 a week aside for 16 weeks to get the Line 6 Helix and pulled the trigger yesterday. I know this is about the Zoom G3Xn but now I have something from the top end and bottom end (I still have my original Digitech RP90 from 2008) and I would say this is a great value for that kind of money. This Helix is friggin' crazy cool and the finest multi-effects unit ever created. But this Zoom would be a great thing to throw into a bag for a weekend at the lake and give you all you need for jamming around the firepit at night.
Just to add: the reverbs/delays are really good. The amp sims and overdrive/distortion much less so.EP and RC boost and Vibe/tremolo also good.Great layout/tweakabilty. So, use this as a basic reverb/delay into an amp.I have the G3n with analog drives on my pedalboard 20..
That's good to know. I'm a long time player, but didn't touch pedals until recently and this unit is going on my board once I have I program it (literally just got it).
Any comparably priced all-in-one-box FX units with decent overdrive and better amp sims for a DAWLESS home studio guy that is not fond of metal or outer space sounds or any other genre except 60’s/70’s Classic Rock? Think Ron Wood/T-Rex and Dan Baird and maybe some 60’s revival Britpop. Overdrive yes, distortion: not really. Gary Moore, yes. EVH, no. I know I’m asking a lot. Thanks.
Carlos Eduardo Cheap guitar with expensive pickup for days, but if it doesn't feel good or isn't particularly your thing don't bother, you can find great guitars for £189 or shit guitars for triple that. Revelation guitars are pretty good for that, £199 Telecaster Special is great looking and feeling, just the pickups aren't great.
Recently, i bought a PRS Custom 24 for £1500, the guitar has a great looking and a Incredible neck, but the sound is realy strange, i bought it for play Hard Rock, i want to upgrade the pickups, but i don`t know which pickups i put it on...
I've a Digitech 360XP great fun. Been messing with it for a while now. Mainly through my Amp Maker, Double 6 combo, (great with pedals too). All guitar players need an FX unit, hours of magic fun. Great video as always guys. ;-)
TheOneVictor hey how to use this processor. No mode nothing is working but showing everthing in display.no sound of effects.should i turn every thing off on my amp?
Putting a modeling effect unit into a modeling amp (Katana)... sigh... Guys, put these kinds of units into an FRFR of some sort or at least something like the Tech 21 Power Engine, or just give us the direct feed out of the unit. That's primarily what these effects units are for !
Yeah I use a little Champ Xd out to 1 or 2 PE 60's with the reg g3. I have been able to absolutely dial some mid level pedals which when totaled up are in the hundreds of dollars vs the g3 for 99 bucks used. Their ac adaptor stinks though. The software works reasonably well.
i use a g2.1nu into a peavey vypyr (the god of low end modelling amps).. and i agree totally. A multieffects pedal into a modelling amp is a waste. I keep my vypyr on megaclean. Id be better off with the cheapest clean tube amp i could find or the new low end katana (though the vypyr on its own is magical)
Directly into any amp is fine. As long as you stay with clean and relatively neutral amp settings. Combining a modeller in the multifx unit with a modeller in the amp is not always a good idea though. That said, we all want all use modes tested. So direct into front of amp, into fx loop, into PA and USB into laptop and whatever else. Personally I want to see stompbox mode straight into front of amp.
Rob Chapman. I've been watching a lot of these lately but not all. If you haven't already you and lee should do a video on how to set up a pedal board and talk about bypass and putting things in the fx loop as opposed to the front of the amp. Have an awesome day man
