Another great video Dave, great to see your exact up close settings for everything on pedal board and amp, as for your 4 x 12 Marshall Cab running as a 2 x 12 with all the extra hollow space is a top idea and sounds excellent even on video on RU-vid so in the room I’m sure it sounds tons better, and as you said definitely less strain on us guitarists with a glass back!! Dave, I have been using Zoom FX pedals for a year or so; and the sound and tone shaping you can do with them is amazing and very easy to do once the user gets used to the way they operate and the learning curve is quite easy.. I create all my own patches and the amp and cab sims work really well. With these Zoom FX pedals using the volume control on your guitar for clean up and more crunch/gain works just like analogue pedals. With a bit of easy tweaking of each parameter you can obtain some very high quality sounds and tones that are reactive to your playing.
I really enjoy hearing what Dave's favorite John era is :) My favorite John solos were in 06/07 cause those were the first shows I ever watched on RU-vid when I first discovered rhcp. Maybe cause at that point and time I really enjoyed John's "flashy" solos. In the Californication era I feel like John didn't have all these different guitar solo chops he showed off in the SA, but I learned to appreciate John's minimalist soloing of the CALI era, minimalist pedalborad, even though he did play some awesome jams in 99 that I really really love. I get why Dave loves that era. I love that all the references of shows he mentions I know exactly what he's talking about hehe, the majority of us here are John/rhcp nuts :)
I'm guess (by the expressions on your face) that the Zoom G5n gets your seal of approval?? :--)) Those tones are just the right side of buttery though I have to admit, very impressive.
Nice playing Dave! I have been struggling to get a decent Jerry Cantrell tone on the G5n. I'm a bit limited because my only amp is a bass amp so I need the cab simulator in the effects chain. Anyway, it would be interesting to see and hear how you would do it. Also, early Pearl Jam, Ten era would be sweet ;-)
Slane castle is a fantastic gig and johns guitar tone was fantastic, Slane castle and Moscow Red Square shows look like amazing shows to have been in the crowd. I used to work as part of sound & lighting crew in early 2000’s at the Manchester Arena, worked on some brilliant shows for some great bands. I went to the By the way tour at Manc arena and paid to be in crowd with my mates in the first night which was really good show, the second night I worked as part of sound & light crew which was loads better for me being lucky enough to watch the full show at the side of the stage to Johns left, had amazing close view and the sound was awesome, when show finished I was on stage packing up all the gear, putting guitars guitars, amps, drums in flight cases, great gig to work. I worked an Elton John gig once and had to dismantle and put his white grand piano in a massive flight case, there wee four of us, when we took first piano leg off to drop that end in flight case I had to support the weight!! I’m a small skinny guy and it was that heavy me and another guy were squashed under the piano trying not to drop it on the floor, was a pretty funny moment.
Hi dave, very nice video as always. I have a question for you. Will you (in the future) do a video on how to make a ''hybrid'' from the zoom G5n multipedal and the other pedals- such as DS2, Ibanez Wah and marshall Jackhammer? (in case there already is a video on that topic, I must have missed it somehow) Thx... :)
Cheers Dave, Will try your setup tomorrow with a G3xn + DS-2. As seen on your final jam your settings can pretty much replicate slane, probably a little bit more bright adjusting the eq as you said and for 250 euros/pounds/dollars w/e its an absolute banger.
Hey Dave, you should make a video about specific effects that John uses, like Throw away your television and Tell me baby. I am thinking about buying this fx unit soon just so I don't have to buy a WH10, so I think you could be really helpful with the tones and effects :)

I already missed the John Strat MkIII Also to note that al the WH10 (Wah100) models Zoom has are the same,so if someone wants that wah tone,smaller pedals like the Zoom G1Four or the G1xOn work exactly the same :) Also I also think that on Californication era John had a special tone and phrasing,maybe different scales? Because it sounds so particular,especially on Scar Tissue as Dave said
I had to go back and watch that reverse reach around twice! That was a thing of beauty! You know they only just legalized that in Canada 50 years ago lol
Dave, my friend... have you also tried these settings thru a different cab? I replicated your settings and... well... :-S I have to say though that I have the newer MG (101FX with the stock speaker), but it's not even in the ballpark of something usable. Maybe your cab has tons of bass and treble and no mids... like an uber-smiley-EQ :-> or could it be that your G5n's global EQ isn't flat?
I'M wondering if you notice much difference in response and sound with digital over analog, maybe more with the g2? I seem to remember my tube amp having a bit more depth and fullness over digital but I think digital had better chord clarity on crunch possibly. My fender gdec goes back a few years so the technology is probably even better now.

has zoom got ways to share these tone patches similar to boss tls patches ? i just got a little zoom GCE-3 interface which gives me access to all their stuff
Hi Dave, don't know if you'll see this, but does this work together well with pedals? For example I already have the Fuzz, DS-2, MXR Phase 90. Could I use those separately and use the slots of the G5n for other stuff?
I am a huge Frusciante fan and in the market for a pedalboard. The only thing that keeps me away from this is the tiny and not coloured display. You got any experience with Frusciante tones on the Headrush pedalboard?
Hey Dave, If you were to use reverb What settings would you go for? I know you didnt like the sound after the amp cause it got distorted. Give us something anyway 🤣🤣
Your playing is fantastic but I'm a bit scared cause I just purshased an unit for the all in one purpose, and even in a god hands it sounds so synthetic to my ears :/
the video is a little old, I don't know if you'll read it... but when you turn on the Fuzz do you turn off the DS2? If I leave the DS2 on I find it a little difficult to control the noise. Finally, thank you for your videos, I really like your work, greetings from a subscriber from Brazil!
Hey Dave, I have a Zoom G1X Four (Which has access to all the same effects) but I'm having trouble getting this sound. Using the MS 1959 *alone* is already too distorted, and adding the DYN Distortion creates an unattractive groan. When the Chorus is paired with the MS, it screeches. I'm playing straight into headphones, could that be the issue?
Hey dave not sure if you'll see this, but when i put this into my g5n I just get a huge screeching noise and I swear its the exact same configuration and levels you're using. I'm two years too late, but lemme know if there is anything in this video specifically that I might have missed causing this.
