Good vid. That's Why i ALLWAYS Saturate the Ground and Surrounding Walls With a Garden hose BEFORE & AFTER Welding Outside. in a Attic Use Spay bottle with Water , Wet Floor , surtounding area, Wet Towels on Ground. Lots of them. and Have Fire extinguisher Handy or Garden Hose in Attic Ready to go.
OcRefrigeration,Hvac & Electrical. I keep a water spray bottle on hand anytime the torch comes out too, and start with wetting down any framing within a foot of the joint. Don't think I've ever seen anyone with a spray bottle in their videos, but that makes at least two of us!
We're using two of these already and very happy with zoomlock. Nice clean job. Installed City Multi for the whole new school using both Zoomlock and brazing where necessary. Saved bunch of time and materials. No need to waste tons of nitrogen for brazing as well. Just make sure the prep work is done right.
Years ago I know of someone who caught a deck on fire. Felt bad for the guy, he is always conscientious of his work. He beat himself up about it for months
I am just a homeowner and i have witnessed a an AC line bursting in flame when the tech unbrazed the line without purging it first, his face nearly caught fire in the act!! Stupid guy!
Looks like it would be good in somne instances, but I would solder at the cond unit and the indoor coil. I use stay brite * on my line sets. It's the refrigeration man's soft solder. Good up to 425F and burst pressure of 10000 PSI. Makes a clean solder job I never have issues with it. Zoom lock would have its uses though, but I wouldn't be wanting to cut off the solder joints at the cond unit, if your fitting doesn't hold, then you have a nightmare on your hands, use Stay Brite #8.
If one randomly throws the zoomlock tool back in the case on rare occasions the trigger button will activate the tool. Thus the blow molded great case has one placing the tool in properly with the extra feature so as not to turn on the tool. I once placed the tool in the case without looking and the tool started to go later when the case was moved, this might be a nice snake repeller too.
I love the idea of the ZoomLock. But, the issue I have is that is uses an O-ring which will eventually dry out and crack. This gaurentees a leak sometime in the future. It's the same issue that all automotive A/C systems have.
Yea, Me Too. it's a Trade off. Hugely Higher Cost for installing Contractor , But Easier Now for the installing Contractor , Great if u Have $3,200.00 Laying Around Doing nothing with , Quick now and Leak Later in 30 years. Or Hugely Lower Cost Now But , More time for installing contractor , Danger welding for installing contractor , and Not Leak ever ! You Know these Evaps are probably gonna Leak before the zoom locks maybe ? So , You know if it lasts 30 Years Thats good enough for me. Ill be Dead in 30 Years ! To Me if Something Lasts 10 years these days , We are Lucky.
They say its rated for 30 years, which is most likely fine on the first system. But what happens on the third system since these guys love reusing linesets? That brazed fitting is good longer than the copper itself. No worries about the fitting leaking in 30
The big question with Zoomlock is how will the fittings will hold up over time? Good brazing will outlast the life of the unit, but will the o-rings in a Zoomlock fitting take 15-20 years of pressure and temperature changes, and constant exposure to refrigerant?
I trust it. Mitsubishi have approved it for use on City Multi installations, and that's a big deal for me. Bottom line - if your techs don't cut the corners and do proper preparation and use depth gauge and reamer - it will hold. It literally squeezes the o-ring between the copper and makes the leak impossible. Again - if the o-ring is not scratched when inserting the pipe into the fitting - there will be no leak. We installed Mitsubishi City Multi in new school using this tool, no leaks. Checked with 600 psi.
Olefshvets - Yes, but you missed my point. It is that no one nows how a Zoomlock fitting will hold up after fifteen to twenty years. What if in 10 years all these Zoomlock O-rings are failing ? That'll be a nightmare...
Ralph your so right It could happen to anyone of us technicians thanks for sharing I will look into investing in a zoom lock I love to trying new tools and products !!!!!
Glad you made this I'm about to tool up for Zoomlock. I have a press tool from Ridgid that I use for plumbing. Nice not lighting my framing on FIRE all the time! Those jaws are compatible with my Ridgid and that's a plus...
Philadelphia A/C and Refrigeration LLC Callahan roommate in college put duct tape on an oil filter with a big gash in it. I told him it would not work. At engine startup a giant blister formed then all 5 quarts of premium Quaker state shot out like a fire house. All this to not buy a new filter. Oil stream went out in an instant. It might have worked if the entire filter had hose clamps side by side. Once the blister formed the surface area radically increased then the duck tape exploded off popped like small firecracker. Then oil stream for a fraction of a second then engine running with no oil. 2 of us told him it was a bad idea
Would you Zoom Lock like this, at your OWN HOUSE? What if someone closes in the ceiling? That wonder joint is now HIDDEN. And for some reason the line set lets go in the ceiling. You are crimping soft copper AND relying on an O-ring seal. Those never dry out and fail......... LOL
Our company change to this tool 3 years ago, no leaks or call backs, if you use the zoomlock correctly these fitting will last about 20 to 30 years. You old timers probably work in hvac chances are you company dose plumbing also pretty sure all your galvanize pipe layers or dead, retired or fired because the could not adjust to PVC.
I don't agree. Do you still use ancient wired landline dial phone at home? Probably not. Point 1: Try it first somewhere in the crawlspace or attic or inside the wall between studs with over-dried plywood behind it. Point 2: You as a tech getting better when you possess more knowledge and use various techniques to have your job done and done right. Point 3: There are jobs that are done best when you combine both brazing and Zoomlock.
ancient COPPER pair "wired landline" that worked reliably through majority of all major storms and many natural disasters, vs. today's fudgefest... you have to be joking right?
propress is getting close to being in place long enough for issues to start appearing, same for digital gauges, which most seem to break all to often and folks always test them against knows dial gauges :)
olegshvets I just roughed in 100 apartment units three stories we use the zoom lock on all the air handlers and all the joints in between floors and in attics probably over 400 Zoom lock fittings in the job total and only two failed and they were probably both bad install but we also braised all the condensing units as we didn't want to mess with cutting the Bell off so I'm a fan of both whatever it takes to get the job
Yep, Had a inspector in Huntington beach tell me with the Huge Glue Lams they only allow 1/2" Hole. Thats it. Framers gonna have to put a Sister on those with Holes.
has it passed the plumbing inspection yet, because it may get caught on that. but it's hard to tell the hole and lumber size via video, so it may be OK
Brazing will cause fire/smoke alarms to go off in the customers house if you don't shut them off before your braze.......just a quick tip from experience.
I will wait about 3-4 years to see how the rubber gaskets hold up in the Zoomlock fittings after being pressurized and having refrigerant oil and refrigerant exposed to it.The cost of the Zoom Lock tool and cost of fittings is way to high and using a swage tool and bending tool and good ole fashion and reliable brazing with 15% brazing rod I will stay with that as I have been doing for 37 years now. I have HVAC systems I installed 30-32 years ago still working with NO Leaks in any of my brazed joints.
Also if these Zoom Lock tool become available to rent by harry homeowner I can see more online HVAC sales hurting our bottom line in HVAC sales as well.
Just because there are idiots out there, still doesn't justify ZoomLeak. I'm sure it would be possible to find somebody who would set a house on fire with even with ZoomLeak lol. If you have to try this hard to just convince people it's better than brazing, it's probably not.
My zoomlock says "Klauke auf dem knapp 46 D-42855 Remscheid" below the battery. ie The Tool is made in Germany. The Klauke webpage in Germany shows other crimping products then make too here: katalog.klauke.com/en/electrical/products/crimping/battery-powered-crimping-tool/18-v-base/ The Zoomlock here says a thrust of 15 kN. 15 kiloNewtons. This is thus 15000/4.448= say 3372 lbs, 3400 to slide rule accuracy. The Zoomlock uses a standard 18V 1.5 Ah battery BL1815N for power tools ie no oddball thing that is hard to get. One gets 2 batteries usually in a kit with a zoomlock. I mention the tools model number as map2lcer and Klauke because used units are titled as zoomlock or by Klauke too or by RLS (Rapid Locking System) www.rlspressfittings.com/ Here is a page to the patents of RLS too if one wants to dig further: www.rlspressfittings.com/patents/
that's a pretty good reason to use zoomlock if I've ever seen one. Does this kind of thing only happen to incompetent techs or do good techs also burn down structures? That tech was definitely not thinking straight putting the flame right on top of prime fuel material!
throttle bottle no it’s not hard to have a sheet metal plate or a wet rag or a bottle of heat block , but when the tech is to lazy to walk back to the truck because he can braze really really fast. His ass is going to learn sooner or later. I told myself if I’m spending more than 1 minute brazing a joint or two, I’m losing
Did you happen to ever test the zoomlock fittings to see how well they hold a vacuum? I've found ALL valve core tools leak under vacuum except the Apion. Anything can hold positive pressure, but not negative. Just wondered. I don't see how the sky high price of zoomlock is worth it, since who do you know who can put in a reversing valve with zoomlock? Most places have no room for that monster. I enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing!
I'm not a hvac tech at all so forgive my ignorant question. Won't the o-rings inside dry out over time and leak causing future tech to run a new line set?
I asked the same question. I assume the rubber seals don't last long. Seems like 30 years is not enough. I'm sure EPA would say something. I suspect I would run into zoom lock leaks 30 years down the line.
Not a dime. Even if they did pay me it doesn't change the fact that the house was burnt down because of installer error. Although careless it could happen to anyone of us.
HVAC1994 yea it probably was some one who was smoking that burned down the house. Scare tactics aren't going to sell more Zoomlocks it's to expensive. What kind of business model do you guys have if sponsors don't pay for advertisement.
Yeah, I bet they sponsor him.. which would mean, when TNT says," they don't pay me a dime." Is NOT a true statement. I wonder how zoomlock works on soft copper that is oval a bit... Often the soft copper we use it's perfectly round.
or Old & Green & Pitted from the Weather. 30 or 40 Year old suction lines. Was on a Job yesterday 40 Year old Line set. Still good. Green a bit. Zoom lock work on that ? ???
