I just installed the Ultimate version last night. I'm a long time Ubuntu user (and Windows). So far what stands out to me the Zorin Appearance, the themes are nice, and the software store is huge it's gnome + flat packs + snaps. I can get most anything. In the coming days going to experiment with WINE. Great video thanks.

@Christian Schön "too buggy"? Highly doubtful. I'd say it is more about just learning Linux. Linux is not Windows and most people who use Windows get confused when they switch over and try to use Linux. I know, I'm one of them. However, with modern Linux builds, like Zorin, functioning more like Windows (in a way), it gives the Windows user a better feel about the possibility of dumping Windows for Linux.
@SeaTurtle1122
@SeaTurtle1122 4 года назад
@@zman8845 I'm going to agree with @Christian Schön here. Linux kernel is ridiculously stable, but many of the modern desktops sitting on top of it are buggy as hell. Gnome has graphical glitches for no god damn reason all the time.

I used Zorin 12 lite three years ago on my roommate's old (circa 2008) PC to keep it running because Windows 7 was just too much for that old machine to handle (Win 7 took well over 5 minutes just to boot up). She acclimated almost immediately, thanks to Zorin's desktop layout. I am now eagerly awaiting Zorin 15 lite

Well another great video, I think I always start my comment's to you like this :) . Now Zorin OS, I think it was your "fault" that about a year or so a go I installed Zorin light on an old Fujitsu laptop. It was a one of those computers that was in a draw as it was no longer up to it and the "user" was fed up (WinXP) and was and still is, not very computer minded and all other linux distros I had showed were not liked or would not run well. Then I saw one your vids that included Zorin and thought "thats more like it" and the old Fujitsu lives a new life. Now your back with this update on Zorin. I like it, think I am going to go for a copy of Zorin Ultimate for myself. Thank you for your continued sharing of knowledge with the wolrd.

Greetings! It's time to confide: after almost 6 years of enthusiastic use of Linux Mint, I've switched to the "Zorin's side". Too easy with this distribution to pair my Android phones/tablets with it, to plug everything on a big screen TV, to use my printers, to connect to my Raspberry Pi projects and other digital devices, to connect with my VPNs accounts and use alternative DNS adresses. That's it. (Respectfully yours!)

Same for me. Used Slackware since 1994 until 2006, then Debian until Mint was stable. Now since Zorin OS 15 I've been running the Ultimate edition, and it just works perfectly on all my devices I install it on. My lenovo IdeaPad laptop got a new life, free from Windows 10. Boots up in less then 10 seconds, including log-in. A great OS for anyone that wants a fast responding computer that just works. With nVidia-drivers you can open RU-vid in Firefox and watch 4K videos from the moment you log in. The Radeon drivers are a bit more fiddly to get going.

Just installed it alongside my lovely Windows 7. Both are shiny and really great, though, when I logged out of my account while downloading an update (I didn't put that into consideration when I logged out), when I logged back in, the system became slower, and after I completely turned off the computer, ZorinOS refused to boot back up (It was stuck on Started Hold until boot process finished, which is not normal for me during bootup process), so I had to reinstall the whole system. Overall, it's great, it detected my display, has a built-in SHAREit-like program with many features, which is good, and a very quick shutdown process. Thumbs up to Linux.

With the way Conical has going as of late dropping many 32bit base libs, among other bone headed moves, I would be cautious of any Ubuntu based distro, as both Valve, and the Wine team have both recently said Ubuntu is not the future of Linux. I would suggest looking into Manjaro with budgie DE as it's very easy to use, it's a rolling release meaning you only need to install it once, unless something goes totally wrong, no PPA nonsense for software, it's based on a more modern Arch base, and from my experience AMD hardware APU/CPU/GPU has worked better then any other distro I've tired with the latest stable Linux kernels, which are a few clicks away, again with no PPA nonsense to get kernel update tool like found on Ubuntu based dsitros like Mint.

Hey, @@CommodoreFan64, what about distros like Fedora? I've heard that many Arch-based distros are hard to use for beginners.
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 5 лет назад
@@Blue-Maned_Hawk Sorry for taking so long to reply it's a Wrestling night lol! I'll say vanilla Arch is hard for beginners, but Manjaro has done the hard work for you, just pick your DE(Desktop Environment) you like, I personally like Budgie, and it's as easy to install as something like Mint at least with AMD, and Intel hardware, I can't vouch for Nvidia, as I swore off them years ago with their attitude to the Linux community, and higher prices. You don't have to add PPA's like Ubuntu based distros to get software not in the main repos, just go into add/remove software, and enable the AUR(Arch User Repository), and search for the software you need. I will admit on 2 gigabyte motherboards I own(Same model FM2+) that I have to reboot at times to get my wired network to show after being in sleep mode for a long while due to the realtek network chips on them, and a Microsoft Lifecam webcam giving out low frame rates, but otherwise it's been smooth sailing. So do give Manjaro Budgie a shot on a spare system, and see if you like it, just remember after install do all your updates first, reboot, then go into the Manjaro settings manager, and then do your kernel up, but make sure to pick a kernel that's stable, and not Experimental/beta, or RT(Real Time) which as of this post is 5.1.16-1, then reboot again, and you should be good to go.

A heads up for anyone considering Zorin OS 15. Zorin screwed over previous paying customers. Last year I paid €19 for Zorin OS 12 Ultimate. You can't in-place upgrade from 12 to 15 (there is no 13 or 14) so you have to start from scratch, losing your programs, your settings, etc. And if you paid €19 for 12 Ultimate, you'll lose those features when "upgrading" (hard to call it upgrading since you have to start from scratch). If you want the Ultimate features you already paid for in 12 back in 15 you'll have to pay again. And you have to pay twice as much as before since Ultimate is now €39. The Ultimate features are exactly the same. You get nothing extra for paying double... well you do get double the headache since you have to start from scratch. I definitely would not pay for Zorin OS 15. I won't even use the free edition. You can't in-place upgrade from 12 to 15 (there is no 13 or 14) so who knows if you'll be able to upgrade from 15 to the next version. And if you pay the €39 for Ultimate, who knows if you'll be expected to pay €79 to get those features back with the next version. Zorin had no problem screwing over people who spent time and money on Zorin OS 12 Ultimate. There is no reason to believe they won't screw you over when the next version comes out. This is a terrible way to treat people who paid money to support an otherwise free OS. Windows upgrades are free. Mac OS upgrades are free. Ubuntu is entirely free. All of these do in place upgrades.

Thats why you skip Zorin and install Deepin (Debian) Same look and feel , and its free . You even get an modified version of Microsoft OFFICE suite.

I have been looking to escape the world of windows and Apple for some time now, and thanks to your wonderful , concise and , professional videos I have .. I trust your no nonsense approach to explaining all things computer , and have tried several of the distro's that you have featured on your Chanel, and have now found my final Linux distro. ZORIN is where I will live and stay. As much as I dislike where Windows has gone, unfortunately I have grown extremely comfortable with using Windows as I am sure so many others have. Zorin is very user friendly, and enough like windows that I will use it from now on as my main system. I do digital animation with ICLONE and video editing, so Sadly I cannot escape windows entirely. At least not until Linux advances a tad more..but for my daily surfing and other needs Zorin is it ! I have YOU and your Great Teaching to thank for finding Zorin..I never would have known of it's existence if it were not for your Chanel. Keep up the stellar videos and keep explaining computers to us ...The best to you mate !

Nice to see you do another Linus OS cover. Tried Zorin a few times and it's a nice clean job. Still with Mint at the moment as I find it can't be topped .

This looks really good and I use a variety of Linux distros on a variety of hardwares for general computing a specialised server based php web dev work. However, as a busy pro photographer I am always frustrated by the lack of genuinely professional alternatives to Photoshop that will run natively in Linux. Gimp is good but not for intensive high rez workflows where one needs to work with RAW files and a 16bit workspace. I hope we linux users can have a photo editor similar to PS, LR or Affinity soon. We have very capable professional tools for AV production such as Kdenlive and Audacity but still nothing that caters to pro requirements in photography.

Try darktable as a LR alternative, I've been pretty happy with it but your mile my vary.

Hi Chris, I feel it would been of more benefit had you shown us more of the OS's features rather than what software is preinstalled. The desktop options look good but you never explorers the 'task bar' etc.

all i got from this is a wrecked 32gb usb stick. Thought I would change allocation space to 8gb and about 20gb. all went fine. Added the iso with etcher and was left with a efi boot partition and a blank allocation section. would not boot up and now drive wrecked. Why cant it be installed from a cd.... would save me throwing away £10

Sorry to hear this, but the drive should be recoverable -- eg using SD Card Fortmatter (free download) or the diskpart command in a Windows terminal.

@@ExplainingComputers Ok fixed the usb sticks using RUFUS. As for installign it. In my laptop bios you need have the stick inserted to choose it as a boot device. That stumped me for a bit. Changing slots makes it not work. Now I have stopped crying at the loss of my wonderful usb stick I can go get this operating system installed. If I get enough thumbs up i will do a youtube video showing how the Balena Etcher failed for me as I can repeat everything. It looks very simple and I guess for some it will be perfectly fine.

@@ExplainingComputers a few hiccups and its on my laptop. Fast boot up and its doing updates now. Glad i saw this video. Bit strange that rufus could fix the usb stick but windows or other software failed. Will keep rufus fir future memory card or usb failiures. Still unsure why the ither software did not finish copying to stick leaving it with bot sector and ualocated space that could not be removed or formated

Pro tip: If you're gonna buy the ultimate version, do so with USD. For some reason the price isn't converted from euros to USD or vice versa, so it costs 39 USD which is cheaper than 39 euros

This is the only distro that wanted money for a distro. I have seen too many for free. Linux mint has everything included, or in their repositories. Yes you can donate, but it's a free download. I have tried several linux os's but always come back to mint. Running 19 now. Started with 17.3

Agreed I have mixed feelings about zorin os asking you to pay for the ultimate edition. I get they need money to keep things going. But so does linux mint and by giving their os out for free, they have gotten enough support through donations.

I've tried Zorin OS in the past, but I'm not a huge fan of it having a paid version, instead of just asking people to donate what they comfortable with like most every other Linux distro. So I hope you do some more on Manjaro, and specifically with Budgie DE.

Versions 9 and later 12 were the start of me using Linux seriously. I have since switched to Ubuntu Budgie since Zorin was a bit unstable for my liking (though that might have been my old laptop's fault) and used to (still does, sadly) lag behind Ubuntu's LTS releases. One thing I like about the Budgie Desktop is that you only need to do a $ sudo apt install paper-icon-theme and some light customizing in Budgie Desktop Settings and it looks and works almost like Zorin's modern Windows preset. Or, as a matter of fact, like any of the presets, whichever one you like most.
