the reason cards work so well out of the box and diminish over time is that liquid since manufacturers have been putting backplates on everything now they been using different thermal pads those thermal pads are not exactly thermal pads and are instead soaked in a non-conductive oil to give them better thermal conductivity if a poly composite pad is hard it is not a good thermal conductor

I had a Zotac 3090 that even after new pads and paste, it would get near 100C on the memory with fans at 100% and an additional heatsink on the backplate. My 3090 FE only gets to around 88-92C on the memory in my enclosed PC case.

I have a different issue, my 3090 trinity oc ramps fan speeds up and down even after changing the pads just like the video. It was doing the same with the stock pads. Changing them did drop temps quite a bite but the random ramp ups to almost 100 are annoying. I did try Msi after burner to adjust the fan curves . I’m about to just sell it for a loss and buy a 4080 I’m sick of this card.

Just to share that I've tried the copper shim mod on memory and you can lower mem temp by another 10-15 degrees compare to thermal pad replacement. Now they are running at around 50℃core/70℃mem range at 1700rpm fan speed which is insanely good.

I don't think its Zotac, I have multiple 3080's and 3090's and they ALL HAVE THERMAL issues. Replaced pads and still not optimal, you need pristine airflow as well over the cards for them not to thermal throttle.

I think most of the aibs have bad thermal pads. My gigabyte 3090 was like 122°c on the vram before pad swap. After pad swap it was like 30°c better.

I replaced my Zotac 3090's fans for 3x Noctua 93mm on the front heatsink and an additional heatsink with 93mm fan for the backside ram modules and I still get 95c @ 286w

@@calgeiser what's your fan speed at? My vram temps are always below 92°c even with a power hungry 3090 running at about 330w. Something's wrong with your air flow or pads maybe? Or your fan speed is way too low/ not enough air flow in case.

@@zzz-vd5rp Linus Tech Tips tried a Noctua fan mod and it was inferior even to a special GPU sold brand new with Noctua fans. I think engineers know what they're doing in this case. I don't think fan mods are always as good as what people think.

I hear ya there. Since I’ve started mining, my q-tip usage has gone up drastically. It use to take us a year to go through a box of 500 q-tips but now we’ve gone through a box of q-tips in 6 months, (between mining and general usage) LOL

Funny, never watched anyone do thermal pads before on older GPU's. Did some for the first time on my used before me 1660 Supers, and they're both making about 4% more. It's less obvious on GPU's like that because they don't have enough power to be challenged thermally. My only reference was Tech Shenji and 3090's. I didn't bother trying to buy what he tested as best because it'd have been overkill. Got 13 watts per meter kelvin pads. Offbrand. owl something? The .5mm was terrible. It was almost like just give me a jar of the clay and I'll scoop it and spread it, it'd be easier than getting the plastic off of those things! Used a tiny flathead screwdriver to coax every millimeter of pad off the plastic after it was already on the memory. As I got better at it, I didn't have to go back and fill the broken patches missing thermal compounds.

Last year I had a zotac edge white 3070. At the time I bought it because (availability) and it had a metal backplate with thermal pads, but ended up changing them because you could see the oil eking through the backplate after a while. Also, Arctic had a recall of Mx-5 very recently as some batches have an issue with premature hardening of the paste. You should look into it to see if it applies to you.

My Zotac 3090 had the same problem and the pads were bad, leaking crap all over the place. I replaced the pads and paste and it's currently running at 66c whilst mining Eth+ Ton and using the pc for general use

Which pad sizes are for EVGA's 3080 FTW3? I used 2mm and 3mm but vram still runs at 98c when mining, fan 70%

I just replaced the pads on the exact same 3080 the other week and actually made it worse. Its been running for a year straight without issues, but I decided to try anyway. Those black pads were decent in terms of having low oil, but are just awful to take off. The problem with this Zotac cooler is that the heatsink on the memory has a poor connection to the fins and heatpipes.

its the size of ur pads my gigabyte cards are the worst some pads dont get good contact and others are crushed so when i put it back together if everything isnt perfect the gpu doesnt get good contact fully anymore i ordered a bunch of copper shims from amazon to add to the heatsink for the gpu and in the future im going to worry more about quality thermal pads cuz .5mm of pad should not be the difference between 85C and 105C

@@cidsapient7154 It was the W rating, probably lower than the black stock pads. Not all pads are soft and might not compress, I tried 2.5mm on this Zotac and it ended up lifting the gpu heatsink instead of compressing as a result the gpu temp rose. Gigabyte cards were horrible in the beginning, but it seems they resolved the pad issue on new sku's.

Krisfix has a video where he states that this card has 0.75mm pads on the memory, if you got 2mm on yours, they are lifting the GPU contact ever so slightly and you're getting that 10C delta on GPU compared to other cards in the same rig.

On the thermal pad replacement job duty today too. Floor fans blasting on these gpus can distort the reality of overheating gpus. I'm so not looking to it considering I ripped apart a Nvidia 3070 ti over 15 times to fit the right thermal pad thickness right. Omg

RPM, Snag a Digital Caliper and you can take the guess work out of the size of the pads; General, ultra tech No. 1433 are perfect and around $20 bucks; I only suggest the Digital because the read out is huge; I also have a non-digital set from my race car engine building days but it can be a strain to look at 1/1000 of an inch or so; you will be glad you added them to your tool kit, seriously; you'll find other use not just for outer but inner diameter also. Amazon has one for $9 bucks; cannot vouch for the quaility; or if they haveva 0 out button like the General brand. Peace

The biggest issue with this card is its bad back plate. Why not make a flat back plate on vram part so we could soft mode for backplate cooling since there are vrams...

I have 4x zoltac 3090, and my temps go as high as 100'c, in winter I have no temp problems, but now it's been a year, I'm not sure it will survive summer, I always have fans on 100%

IMO Zotac is the worst of all the GPU brands. Not just the thermal pads being junk, the cooling solution itself is just bad. I've replaced pads in about 14 Zotac cards out of necessity and some still run hot. Fans have failed and needed replaced, and their 3090 AMP Extreme HOLO has some weird power limited / BIOS issues that I could only fix by flashing it with an EVGA 3090 FTW3 version. My suggestion.....just don't buy Zotac.

What can cause my 3080 to hash at around 98mh and after a day or so drop to 60mh ? Thermals are around 40c core and 88c on vram. Im using nicehash btw, also ive tried switching risers, i had it installed in a full 16x slot still drops mh for sum reason oc was -200 on core , +1000 on mem power limit 60%

Its strange, I bought a Zotac 3090 Trinity last year and have ran it in Hive OS since. Being paranoid with all these videos about mem temps I decided to put it in windows and run it, to my amazement mem was only at 88*C. Stock pads, been mined on for 1 year. I wonder if Zotac changed their pads at some point over the last year or I just somehow got luck.

So further to this, since Hive OS show mem temps now it was running at 94-96 on the Rig (previous test was done on open air test rig). I’ve since swapped out to a CoolMyGPU copper plate and dropped to 76, managed to also increase overclock and now sitting nicely at 82 having gained about 4mh on ETH.

mine msi suprim X does 98mhs on 199W with mem temp 84 on 12wk pads. i can go to 100.7mhs with 236w, but not worth the extra power

I probably need to change my thermals too. Mine seems to keep throwing overheating messages mining on NH even at stock speeds. I reduced the ram -200 and core -50 which helped a little to keep the messages from showing up but the fans are at 100% all the time on both the card and the case. It’s like a blow dryer. I have the huge MSI dual fan with RGB and 120M fans on the back with open top, front and bottom screens where radiators would go and it’s never over 74 in my house.

It's so easy to pull off a tiny SMD device with paper towels. I'd recommend a soft bristle tooth brush and alcohol in a spray bottle instead.

My guess was before watching the video. Probably wouldn't even them out, but I'd guess hashes could improve. When temps improve power consumption typically goes down too. Not the same, but I got all those benefits repading and thermal pasting my first GPU's yesterday. My 1660 Supers are making like 10% more hashrate. It's harder to tell on lower power GPU's because they don't get hot to tell you something is wrong.

Yea I agree, I don't have any low power gpu's per se, but I can def see it happening since power is already low on those cards

@@Artun. I think my 1660 Supers have Samsung memory, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't now how to find out. What's the benefit of flashing their bios? You'll laugh at this, most of my "hot" GPU"s are on an open rig and my cooler ones are in a server with high air flow. My D37 board I think is kind of crappy and I couldn't resist going for a better MOBO for my open rig with a G4400 7th gen Pentium.

hey red panda, I have 2 of these 3080 zotac lhr, had to swap thermal pads for both using gelid extremes 2mm and 3mm. use h1 paste. got my temps down to 88 degrees at 25 degree ambient. I then swapped out the gpu fans with artic 120mm fans as the zotac fans were loud af and trash, also each of them consume 1.2amps vs arctic fans consumes 0.3amps. it was something crazy. zotac fans are crazy inefficient and power inefficient. im probably saving $1 a month buy swapping out those fans. be able to pay off my 2 artic fans in 20 months :p roi rip xD

All the electrical techs be like...wtf is this guy doing with his expensive cards. This is why you don't buy used cards. I'll say it like this ESD damaged; latent failure. Get an ESD mat and strap if your doing surgery like this!!! This is your money maker...be safer when doing this type of work.

hello i use 2 mm thermal pad in my zotac 3080ti under the temperature of the memory from 93 degrees to 73 at work but my core temperature rose 4 degrees in my 3 zotac i use the artic mx4 for the core, it is not much temperature at work I am in 51 core and 78 memories but before the memories were in 46... it happens to me in my 3 zotac

Every company uses garbage stock pads. I’ve got numerous FTW3 GPUs that I’ve replaced pads on. 20c avg drop on memory post replacement. Gigabyte, ASUS, FE, etc. they all use cheap low thermal transfer pads. Even EKWB uses cheap pads on their water blocked units. 20c drops on water cooled cards with Thermalright or Gelid pads / the most conductive pads they offer that is.

The 3080s are wild, I agree. I have two EVGA 3080 HCs, one is the XC3 Ultra, and the other is a FTW3. Both cards will hash at 101.5 but the XC3 uses less power at 206W vs 226W for the FTW3.

hiveOS documentation says to lock the core clock correctly the value needs to be divisible by 15 1100 is not divisible by 15 and may be that your core clock is not locked correctly

EVGA's RTX 3090 XC3 is even worse. My Zotac card is actually doing fine. I mean, I had to swap out the thermal pads on ALL of my cards. Gigabyte is probably the worst.

I just replaced the thermal pads on the same exact card and my core temps were high also. went back in after the pad was hot took it out and tightened it more got better core temps. I used 2mm pads also

Hmmm, from Tech Shenji's 3090 - huge video - I think that you can go too high on the WMK or watts per meter kelvin on the pads. The highest ones cooled the memory better only to sacrifice the core. Those mining gear WMK were way higher than what I'm familiar with. 20 is probably too high. Maybe that doesn't matter so much if it's a memory intensive crypto, but what if you want to dual mine? What about after the ETH Merge?

You would think that with all the themal problems the 30 series cards have had one company would go out on a limb and make a good cooler , use good pads and charge the premium for those additions . Market it as a super cooled 30 series card and have the most desired line of 30 series cards yet. Can you imagine someone paying a premium to buy your product because it works better then its competitors? Thats an insane thought in the PC world.

I'm my experience, zotac pads have been fine (3080, 3060 ti, 3070). None of them have ever thermal throttled on me. In fact, I'd say that zotac 3080s are some of the best for mining stock in terms of thermal throttling. Also that residue is pretty normal, thermal pads are supposed to be greasy. You wouldn't want a dry thermal pad, would you?

lotto winner right there :) my 3070ti is the worst performer of the bunch. trying to talk myself into changing the thermals. just have to see it done a few times before i give it a try.

@@ssnidely it's honestly pretty easy. Just watch a video while you do it. I've heard the 3070 tis are terrible which I have no experience with. I've had 10+ zotac 3080s tho and they're all fine, and I've never heard anyone else that's had any issues with them besides RPM. Good luck though!

@@badmeme6801 My 3070ti has been great. It's just hot because of Ton dual mining. Brand new...makes me want to consider repadding them with high end stuff just to see? I do heare the founders editions are harder to pull apart though...

Fun fact did you know a 3090 inside a hot room mining has a higher chance of being cooler than a zotac GPU also the tac part of zotac stands for tacky thermal pads

Honestly, ive never had an issue with thermal paste brands. So long as there is thermal paste, you should be fine in most non oc cases.

Are there even any GPU's that use really good thermal pads? I don't mind paying more if they collaborate with Gelid or the other great thermal pad makers. In fact, I'd stick to the brand that does since it saves me from the hassle of having to do this.

Your temps are still not good, i changed on my Zotac Trinity Rtx 3080 and its sitting max 44/76. And i used only 12 w/mk pads.

OMG! What happened to zotac? My 6 gpu rtx 2080 ti are the one with the best temperature. It's strange that with the 30 series they do it wrong… It seems that they no longer work as well :(

artic silver 5 is electrical conductive, be really carefull, i use it since i build computers as well but specially for gpu is not recomended.

100c on memory its faking amazing!!!! the card start to decrease Power when it reach 112c on the memory than GPU enters limit state to prevent damage. my 3090s memory at summer work on 108 - 110c someties it even reach 112c than my hashrate decrease from 117mh/s to 110mh/s

the zotac fans look a little choked being so close to the GPU next to it. Could switch it to the far left slot so that it can breathe a little bit. The asus cards look good with spacing

what sizes did you use. i used 3 mm on back place, 2mm on vrams and 2.5 under the bracket. its thermal throttling and reaches 96 over 10 min and restarts. please help

Literally just did this on my zotac 3080ti amp holo with same results. Oily disintegrating pads. What a joke. Mem junction temps went from 110 to 81c lol

@@tmlinhkct Hey Bud, make sure the core is getting good contact on the heatsink plate. You may need to use 1.5mm on the front instead. With those squishy gelids you can also smash them down the make them thinner. From what I understand its common for the core temp to increase as the thermal pads near it are actually soaking more heat from the memory. I experienced a rise in my core temps but they are still in the safe range for mining 24/7. Did this on all 3 of my 3080ti amp holos and they are running better than ever!

@@lorenm4015 i have tried with 1.5mm but mem temp reached to 110C. Seem 1.5mm is too thin. So, 1.75mm is good enough but its difficult to buy it.

Zotac is the shitties on thermal. Just change pads and paste. Also better performance if you ad paste top and under pads. I have few of those shitBoxes and doing this i have gain stable 92celcius for Raven on 40has. I should propably get medal for this achievement 🤣🤣🤣

i'd like to submit Gigabyte as well - i had a brand new Gigabyte Aorus Waterforce AIO 3080 that out of the box the vram would hit 110 - their pads and design are horrible

RPM i dont even know if we should be blaming Zotac for their pads when using the gpu for mining... On the other side, I dont see any gamer complaning yet... just saying
