Testing magazine FITMENT on the new Zastava ZPAP M90 556 AK rifle and discussing the magazine well vs my M85 pistol. Follow me on Instagram: / austinsarmoury Beat Provided By freebeats.io Produced By White Hot
@@silentReaper1220 Thanks. I may give them a try. I had to cut WBP mags to hell and back to get them to fit, however FB Beryl mags fit in my M90 without modification. They are very tight and are "wearing in" so to speak but do fit and operate fine.
I have used the AC-Unity 5.45x39 mags for a while. I do have one gun that they didn't fit without dremeling the left side feed lip, but none of my other 5.45x39 guns had any issues.
I picked up my M90 last week. My mag well doesn't have the bit of extra material that yours has. It looks just like the mag well on your M85. I had several steel Yugo mags and ordered 5 AC Unity mags. When the Beryl mags come back in stock I'll order some.
I guess it just depends on how motivated your mag conversion guy was that day. My mag well looks like your M85’s. I did have to grind down the top of the magazine release though, had to slam in the mag it came with and karate chop it out before I took some metal off.
These videos were super helpful, I commented about 5 months ago and had just ordered a m90, now after a few months of having it, and going through lots of different mags myself, I have to say my favorite are the WBP and FB Radom polish mags, *but* only after filing slightly those sharp corners at the back of the mag, after doing that however with nothing but a hand file they fit perfectly smooth in and out, tight but not too tight, they are nicer fitting than the Zastava mags, which have a tiny little wobble front to back and side to side on my m90. AC unity are a close second, they are a little tight at first, but force fit after repeatedly inserting and removing about a dozen times each. Now we just need to get those 45 and 60 round AC unity 556 mags in stock somewhere..
Thanks man! I've seen the 45rders on GunBroker but apparently they're quad stack which is less than ideal. I definitely plan to get one asap and do a video on it 👌
@@AustinsArmoury I look forward to it, at least the quads should be a better alternative to drums. There isn't a single 556 drum that I know of that has any acceptable reliability. Other than perhaps some old steel drums that came with Chinese AK back in the 1990s, but those are unbelievably rare.
You may have to modify them feed at a higher angle. I'm working on modifying one now, but out of the box without modifying the feed angle I couldn't get one to work reliably w/ my M85
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Fyi Tapco Galil Golani 556 30rd work on the M90 a lil loosy but will fire all 30rds no issue. (Range use only) I happen to have a bunch for my 556 Vepr so I share them now. They were 14$ ea.
Good information! You should document range time with all of these mags in the M90 and the M85 for reliability. They may fit and lock in, but the feeding could be screwy.
Definitely the plan! I already have a bunch of videos testing the mags w/ the M85, but I plan to range test every 556 ak mag I can get my hands on w/ both of them.
My ZPAP M70 actually came with a much worse looking magwell than yours, there was actually a sharp point on it that would hang up pretty bad on any magazine. I ended up just sending it back and they ended up opening up up to look like your M85. You should try reaching out to them, they were able to get it back to me within a week of sending it out.
Thanks for this. As a recent M90 purchaser, this was very helpful. Subbed to the channel. As an aside, did you have trouble getting the cleaning rod into the stock? I have had some sticky ones on other AKs but this one I could only get a few inches into the front handguard and it meets severe resistance and starts crunching (I think) into the sheet metal insulator. I finally just gave up on it as the rifle is heavy enough as is.
Thanks! Yeah the cleaning rod is a bit of a mystery. Mine was very tight against the handguard and is too short w/ 2 lengths and too long w/ all 3. Not sure what Zastava was doing w/ that.
Watch those Galil mags. They tend to lock in but often sit too low to properly feed. I had one perfectly lock into my Saiga only for the rounds to catch under the feed ramp. If they work in the Zpap that would be great.
just ordered one this morning. I really wish they offered it with the standard wood furniture. I had to shell out 250 more just for that. but I am excited for it.
I'm considering wood as well or a hybrid set up of wood upfront and a skeletonized rear. Not sure yet since I'm considering making this a competition piece.
@@GeneralRamstein Good to know. I'm still considering it. I recently changed my 74 over to Russian surplus wood, but now I'll probably never use it because 5.45 is pretty much dead. But it does look really sharp and is actually lighter than the plum colored Magpul furniture I had on it. When I first got it, it had the cheapest garbage plain black polymer I have ever seen. But this was way back in like 2006.
You need to put some ammo in the mags then see if they fit, some go in too far and wont go in unless the bolt carrier is back when inserting a loaded mag.
My zpap m90 that I got from Atlantic firearms looks like somebody already dremeled the backend of the magwell to remove the material that was sticking out on yours. Not sure if that's new QC from atlantic or zavasta. The areas that look dremeled are raw steel and not blued, so it makes me thing that atlantic might be doing this.
aye or maybe mine was just done on a Friday lol. I know the rifles come into the country with a single stack magwell because import laws so Zastava is definitely doing some work to them once in country
The spring clip just keeps the gas plug from rotating. Originally the first AKs w/ this adjustable system just used a metal tab on the gas tube: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zkiJnE-FC64.html
@@AustinsArmoury I would prefer the system in the link. Adjustable gas systems can be tricky. The last thing i want is to damage that little exposed spring and have my gas system adjusting itself and working over to the suppressed setting while i'm shooting without one. I'm just thinking worst case scenario.
zastava claims their mags are made to fit loose so they will work in almost any 556 ak, that being said i had feeding issues with the mag that came with my m90. i'm told the steel mags fit tight and feed fine.
It's tight against the rubber handguard for sure, but it's actually an AKM cleaning rod I had laying around. The rifle came w/ a weird sectional cleaning rod that was too short if you only used 2/3 of the rods and too long if you used all 3. The AKM is a little short, but sits nicely and would be perfectly serviceable if I actually needed to use it.
I'm a bit confused about the Serbian "surplus" mags. Did Serbia actually field a .556 AK? I thought the M90 was planned but was never actually produced for military use, because of the breakup of Yugoslavia, and was later sold to the civilian market.
They planned to field them but the breakup killed that idea and it never happened but they did make some. I call it surplus bc it came soaked in cosmoline, but it's identical to the current production metal mags from Zastava. I have a mix of both.
@@AustinsArmoury Got you, thanks for the reply, that makes sense. I didn't realize they actually produced some military magazines or rifles before breakup though. I suppose it makes sense that they would have at least prototyped it, but never reached mass production. Your videos are great btw, really helpful, I just ordered a M90 from my local gun store, might even be in this week, *fingers crossed*.
Exactly, the one that came with it and I bought 3 more and they are worthless, they jam round in between barrel and trunnion, pushing round down into case, beating up the case and having to drop mag and use thumb and finger through maxwell and action to get out. It isnt a simple rack and clear malfunction they are wedged. Runs like a sewing machine with circle 10's though, they were super tight and had to be forced in first few time
U really think that little bit of movement on the galil mags would make it malfunction? I've seen some wobbly ass clapped out ak's run just fine for 5x the wobble
The issue is that the feed angle is too flat. I couldn't get the mags to work in my M85 and am inferring the M90 will have the same problem. Either way I plan to test it as well as put together a video modifying a galil mag to work better.
It would fit, but feeding would be questionable. The 556 Bakes were just 74 bakes w/ modified followers to my understanding and everything I've seen indicates they are extremely picky
Yeah they originally were Yugo, but Zastava is also making new ones. I have one of each and they're identical so I just call them all Serbian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Understandable - I wish the conversion was something you could drop in and easily remove, but my understanding is that it's a permanent modification since you have to cut into the front trunnion to install the m16 magwell.
People, stop trying all this crap and just use the Zastava mags for crying out loud. Why even take a chance. Why use a dremel at all and take a chance on screwing your gun up. Buy the damn magazines that are specifically made for the rifle.
The Serbian metal mags are the best for sure in my opinion, but it's always fun and interesting to know what else might work. Especially if you're already heavily invested in a different 556AK pattern better to at least know you have the option of mag compatibility. The dremel was to finish the job that was already done on it when the rifle got into the country. While the pistol can come into the US the same as it comes out of the factory the rifles are heavily reworked once they get into the states bc they're neutered for import sadly. I wouldn't have modified the magwell if I didn't have the M85 pistol to see what it *should* look like.
LOL please STFU. I’m not going to spend cash on mags that only fit to one rifle when they should fit in all of my rifles. Just because you’re too scared to modify your stuff doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. But please, feel free to continue making some gunsmith out there rich when you could have done it yourself. 😂
