Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized to the families of children who suffered abuse on social media platforms during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday.
“I’m sorry for everything you’ve all gone through,” Mr Zuckerberg said, turning to audience members holding up pictures of their loved ones. “Nobody should have to go through what your families have suffered. This is why we have invested so much and are going to continue industry-leading efforts to make sure that no one has to go through the types of things your families have suffered.”

Because 90% of the time, people like Zuck dance around the questions themselves. If you've seen any other video of Josh Hawley grilling politicians and CEOs, you'll notice they don't answer directly nor do they keep on track. Senators don't have much time to speak and ask questions, and Zuck has been doing this stuff for years, so he likely already know Josh doesn't have much time to grill him. When they actively start stalling, it's time to cut to the chase.

This is an area where the governments around the world should 100% step in and create safety measures for vulnerable groups, these company’s clearly are not going to do it, the governments around the world are late to be implementing these measures. Parents also hold a responsibility to their children to help them navigate through these horrible social media sites, imagine a stranger walked up to your child and told them think x y and z would you tolerate it? I think not, so why let a stranger online do the same?

It is easy to win a discussion when this senator gets the majority of speech time and every time his opponent tries to answer the senator raises his voice and tries to have power in terms of the direction of this conversation. I mostly agree with this, however it should be said that tech companies make it infinitely harder on parents. Social media can destroy a child’s life without them ever making an account, via other kids using it to spread rumors. Also, a lot of school activities are organized exclusively through Facebook these days, so if you want your child to be able to participate you almost are forced to allow them access.

u do realise if they saw the unwanted images on instagram, it is either from a direct message sent as a photo, appeared on their feed BECAUSE of how they formed their own algorithm, or if it was a viral video. mark cant control that. however kids need to be educated more of the dangers which is what mark should be actively doing. for instance parental controls on accounts, settings where no one can message you unless you accept their request to message

I would not defend a billionaire who makes fortune on a product that does not necessarily advance society, but to blame your kid’s self image on a social media company sounds pushing it. It is a for profit company, free to use, they can certainly do better but it is the responsibility of the government to safeguard and limit these companies. I am sure most of us will chose a world with instagram and facebook over a world with it.

Regardless of which political "tribe" anyone thinks they are a part of, this would be the SAME THING as a politician asking firearm manufacturers if they are willing to pay victim's families. The grandstanding of politicians on these various committees is undermining the point of even having these committees. More and more polticians are using any and every opportunity to just appeal to their "tribe" and advance their popularity rather than collaborate and effectively negotiate the change that progresses this union. Yeah to be honest, I was thinking along the same lines. However, Facebook needs to make sure that nudity stuff is GONE. A quick effective way to report harassment would be good too. Even if its AI generated. It means there may be errors...but who could afford to run a department dealing with millions & millions of reports & complaints?

To be fair, as poisonous as social platforms are, or rather have become, I don't really find it fair to hold him at fault here. You choose what you follow and what you interact with. You choose what and who you block and prevent from interacting with you. You choose what you put out on internet thats related to you. And lets not forget that parents choose how much they want to get involved with their children and just be aware of waht that child is doing, dealing with and going through.

to people saying that it is the parent's fault- once your child is on social media and exposed to the world there is not much you can do. just like you cannot prevent someone's drug addiction, no matter how hard you try. so you have to address the problem, and that problem is the platform. social media is a money making industry, just like the drug industry, but many people, especially children, are less aware of the detrimental effects of it

I think there should be laws to where you can tell people who testify in front of an American Committee, "if you don't answer the questions being ask to you I will fine and jail you until you comply" People shouldn't be able to make a mockery out of these hearings. This isn't a joke or a political battle. If you're called in front of Congress to testify you need to be, upfront, honest and open. your answers should be clear and to the point and you should understand that these hearings are supposed to make life better for all people living or visiting inside The United States of America. We the American people demand all being questioned tell the truth and if you don't you'll be sitting in jail till you give answers to the questions being asked.

There will be no major problem if a child use social media but seeing nudity is something that causes major problem in a growing child. You cannot stop those curious children from not using social media.. Don't ask why they are there, ask why nudity exists in those platform in the first place and why the post was recommended to the minors in that platform.
