@@Ndasuunye it wasn’t just that. This particular situation he was completely unprepared for for a different reason. Spoilers ahead He easily promised that he would take the fire nation colonies down, however, upon arriving to the colonies to start the process, mixed bending couples started protesting. It wasn’t fully obvious until a woman directly earthbended at him, and yelled at him for breaking apart her family. At that point, he had no idea what to do. He didn’t want to break up the mixed culture families, but he almost knew he promised Aang to right the Fire Nation’s wrongs. The troubles had nothing directly to do with being the Fire Lord, and more to do with the fallout of 100 years of history now having passed, and the situation had been the norm for the locals for a long time.

I don't think we necessarily need to explore his backstory that much. @@AndalusianPhilosopher I mean... Ozai IS humanized enough. He's just a repulsive human. He thinks him, his nation, his culture are superior than the others ("Your people didn't deserve to live in this world, in MY world"), so clearly he's not just a force of nature, he has ideologies and beliefs that "justifies" opressing other "lesser" cultures and people in his view. He's a character with clear motivations, and what he does has a point; it's not a point like "omg, he has a point, but he's bad", but IS a point. He's an abusive parent that punishes his kids when they don't meet his standards of honor and respect, what it means to love your country, he doesn't care about their well-being and hapiness, and many parents do the same, and go even further and kills their kids for even less. He has a personality, opinions, beliefs, ideologies, shows emotions, but is never vulnerable. He is humanized by the show. He just doesn't have a tragic complex backstory, or even an interesting one, but really, what would be the point of that? Not everyone needs to have a complex backstory to justify who they are now; Ozai has a wrong view in the world, and especially in parenting, and that's it. What's the problem? Many people, dictators, serial killers, robbers, kidnappers or just do this because they believe in a distorted idea of what is right, or they just do this for pure self pleasure. That's Ozai. He didn't burn Zuko because he is the bad guy and only, but "it was to teach you respect". He's being human. He's just being a repugnant person because that's who he is, like many other people in the world, not because he lost a friend, a family, a dog, was abused by his father, went trough trauma, or something like this.

Without said fuel, he went into the nastiest withdrawal aka narcissistic collapse. Hence why Ozai looks so old when his mid 20s/early 30s-aged son's visit rubs his healthy and hunky youth in is sorry @$$ and face. I believe Ozai and Iroh are two different aspects of flame. Iroh is the gentle warmth, like a campfire, inviting the cold and weary to sit and rest. a wavering flame through the wind, capable of change when needed, but always resilient. Ozai, on the other hand, is what happens when fire is given to much fuel. it reaches a point in which it is almost impossible to be quelled. the raging inferno destroys countless innocents in its path to burn everything around it. it has no motives, but to ruin. it is too unbearably hot to stand around, and thus repels all who approach. however, when the embers die down, the dirt becomes even more fertile than ever before, and a new land is sprung from the ashes.

As an Australian man myself born in 1998 who likes watching Avatar: The Last Airbender because it is such an awesome entertaining unforgettable show. In my honest opinion Ozai is a seriously messed up character. He is a terrible son when he poisoned his father Azulon to death while he is a sleep to become the next Firelord, he is a terrible brother when he imprisoned Iroh by falsely accusing him as a traitor to the Fire Nation, he is a terrible uncle when he showed no empathy for the death of his nephew Lu Ten who got killed during the 600 day siege of Ba Sing Se, he is a terrible husband when he forced Ursa to break up from her fiancé Ikem also known as Noren so he could marry her for himself plus he mentally abused her with domination after that he banished her, he is a terrible father by using his daughter Azula as a weapon after that he abandoned her despite her loyalty plus he told a younger Zuko that he was lucky to be born plus he tries to sacrifice Zuko when he was a little boy plus he challenged him to an Agni Ki by humiliating him in front of the Fire Nation when he was just 13 years old after that he burned him on the side of his face by leaving him permanently with a scar after that he banished him plus he also tried to kill him with his lightning ability, and he is also a terrible Firelord by forcing the Fire Nation to engage in many ruthless battles by colonizing plus burning down the entire Earth Kingdom during the 100 year war with the power of Sozin’s comet so he could become the Phoenix King. Ozai is literally a demon in shape of a human.

To be fair, you can call it 'manipulation' and it probably was, but it wasn't bad advice, especially for someone like Zuko. As the Fire Lord not every decision will be cut and dry, a choice he makes can be the difference between starving one group of people in order to save another (the hawk and the turtlecrab), Zuko needs to realize that he is the only one who can ultimately decide what is 'right' when it comes to those hard decisions, and like Roku told Aang once before the final battle, you have to be decisive. If you sit on a decision for too long the wave will crash down and make the decision for you. Again in Zuko's flashback, he waited so long that a wave swept him out and the crab ultimately got away anyway, leaving the hawk to starve, but it also left Zuko struggling to get back to shore. The problem solved itself but he ended up weak and fighting for air from not taking action sooner.

Yet even to him, those are the most memorable times in his life, that his son didn't had a chance to choose properly and to let the hawk eats the turtle crab or permanently not let the hawk eats the turtle crab. A leader is a responsibility, it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, and you know there's always a risk to decide.

Moving along now to the subject of this video: Ozai even though evil was partially right because there’s an old saying in England “ heavy is the burden that wears the Crown, which Ozai tried to corrupt his kid with but being an ruler of an kingdom “ rulers must made harsh decisions at times, which some may be right but others seen as evil “ because an example scenario is given ( an pair of citizens come to the palace to argue an dispute where if one is usually Right the other will not like the outcome in many cases) , so an wise king or firelord as he tried to explain if used via wise counsel is to listen to both sides of the argument and be as fair and impartial as possible, though Ozai tried to use an lesson in leadership only to try to corrupt his son, the new king… So he’s partially right and wrong at the same time…

That's something I've always wondered about. There was a group dedicated to getting Ozai back on the throne. But he has no fire bending so he can't with hold power or enforce it. @@MohamedRamadan-qi4hl Ozai made Azula the Fire Lord so that he could become the “Phoenix King”, which ended up being a moot point anyway after Aang stripped him of his bending power. Azula descended into madness and was defeated as well. With those two gone, the only one left with any fully legitimate claim to the throne was Iroh, but he had no interest in the throne and gave it to Zuko. As for the 100 years of conquest, that’s a very long story covered (at least to an extent) throughout the official comics, most notably in stories like “The Promise” and the introduction of the New Ozai Society. It’s been a long time since I’ve followed the comics, so I’m a bit fuzzy on the exact details, but it wasn’t as simple as instantly no more conquering with just the snap of Zuko’s finger.

a fitting death for a peace of trash such as him in the end removing his bending was *THE BEST* thing Aang could of done . Its like Luffy shattering the dreams of his enemies without killing them . I bet Ozai would prefer and if could even beg Aang to had killed him back then ! Some people criticize that ending because of how reckless was for Aang to try the bending removal technique just because he stubbornly refused to kill Ozai as the past Avatar memories advised him, but ultimately I think it turned out to be a brilliant decision. I love the fact that Ozai’s advice to Zuko is both right and wrong at the same time. That’s actually a sign of really good writing. The key is that Zuko is being indecisive. That’s what happened to him when he was a kid, That’s what was happening to him as fire lord. And it’s that same indecision that got him scarred. ‘Heavy is the head that wears the Crown.’ All the perks, all the benefits, all the praise everybody gives you for being a ruler, and that’s all just the upside‘s to the downside of being a king/emperor/president: the job. any kind of position of leadership needs for that leader to make a decision. And at times they don’t have the luxury to wait to make that decision, by all means listen to advice even change your mind maybe even realize that you make a mistake. But just standing there doing nothing while thinking of all the pros and cons of each decision for to long, Only leads to problems.

Exactly. And whats interesting about as well is Roku faults himself for the same flaw; indecisiveness; and regrets not ending Sozin to prevent the war. When Roku commands aang to kill Zuko. Aang reacts by cutting his ties with Roku and his connection to his past lives as well. Perhaps, Roku was more nuanced than the fandom would have you believe. The reason for his decisiveness to kill Zuko, was because he feared Zuko was becoming like Ozai. Perhaps because Zuko was being decisive about certain things. While Roku also experienced a betrayal by his best friend, Sozin, he wanted to prevent Aang from experiencing that again with Zuko.

I pictured things a bit differently for Ozai: Ozai starts doing what Iroh was doing, he does various exercises and learning to adapt without his bending. Looking back at his back story, I made up an idea that Ozai once visited the white lotus, before Iroh, while under cover, using an alias called Xai Bau. He learned of everything they know. His true reasons on being fire lord/phoenix king is he’d use the resources to cause enough damage to the physical world so the walls between the plane of spirits and the material world will come crumbling down and he'd try conquering both. But those plans were derailed due to the lion turtle’s convenient meddling. There for that’s when he decided to use the methods of anarchy. Ozai still has support from the new Ozai society that Azula is currently leading. I made the assumption that the fire warriors and the new ozai society are cover names of the true organization, the red lotus. Azula knows nothing about it but Zirin does and she’s secretly working for Ozai. Zuko asks a request from Aang in helping track down Azula. He does so using the energybending to track down Appa in the swamp. He does so but something unexpected happens, due to Azula being a descendant of Aang’s past life, Roku, their souls intertwined and have become bonded. This spirit bond allows them to understand each other on an empathy level and they begin to come closer to each other then any other before. Aang tells Zuko where he is, he takes up the blue spirit mantle once again, followers her at ember islands and gives her the same note he got about the dragon catacombs, she goes into those catacombs and reads all about Sozin’s life story. Azula confronts Zuko about this in the bedroom and he tells her that avatar Roku is the their great-grandfather from their mother’s side. Azula is left speechless, but Zuko gives her the same speech Iroh gave him, he then let’s her go and did not set a trap for her capture. Zuko announces that he quits being the fire lord and allows Iroh to take his place which confuses and almost terrifies Azula. After much contemplating, Azula decided if Zuko will not be the warlord she knows and serves, then perhaps Aang will. The two get into a psychological war, Azula tries bringing out the bad in Aang where Aang tries bringing out the good in Azula. And Aang was almost at the winning side. Ozai confronts the lion turtle, he starts a battle with it. It’s the toughest fight he’s ever had, especially since he no longer has any bending. Ozai finally manages to be on top, not only did he actually slay the great lion turtle, Ozai absorbed it’s soul, gaining all it’s powers. It’s then that he reveals himself and the red lotus and they all betray and capture Azula. The gaang come in and rescue her. Aang and Azula go to a private island to work on Azula’s chakras, after they are cleared, their bond grows even stronger. She finds her self to find an affinity for spirituality like Iroh and Aang. After Azula, Mai and Ty Lee make up, they officially become a part of the gaang. Skipping ahead into the climax of Aang’s saga, for real this time, there’s a great battle between the white lotus and the red lotus. Ozai was tough opponent with new found energybending and it took the entire gaang everything they got. Finally, Aang gets the upper hand by using spiritbending with all the elements instead of just water and uses his own energybending to give it a boost. Aang successfully purifies and pacifies Ozai’s soul but his physical body dies in the process, much to Aang’s shame and guilt but Katara makes him feel better. Many of the red lotus and white lotus members have died, including Zirin and the entire fire warriors, with only a hand full of less known surviving members from both sides. Azula and Aang discover some sky bison. Azula, Mai and a dozen fire sages decide to tend to the bison together as shamans. Iroh continues being fire lord until his peaceful passing and Zuko takes the crown again and marries Ty Lee. Aang and Katara also decide to marry.

*Reactions from members of the Royal Family (My theory.):* Zuko: My father's legacy is nothing but a shadow I've long struggled to escape from in my youth, and was finally freed from as an adult. His death may bring a closure to my imprisonment, but it doesn't erase the scars he, his father, and his grandfather left behind, not just the one I still carry. Azula: I looked up to him when I was a child, since he considered me more of a prodigy than my ill-tempered brother. But, as adult, looking back, his legacy is nothing but that of manipulation, abuse, and betrayal, something I too have been guilty of in my life. His death only proves that nobody is invincible, not even me, my mother, my brother, my uncle, my niece, nor my now fallen father, dare I even say his name. Iroh: Ozai's journey and legacy was certainly one of ambition, but also destruction. Something I was guilty of when I was the heir to my father's throne. In death, he shall find peace and redemption that he avoided in life. Ursa: For too long, I once held on to the hope that the man I foolishly married could find his way back to the light, just as my brother-in-law, son, and daughter did during their years in exile. I was wrong. His death as a small hateful man trying to look big, but without room for love or affection, is a reminder of lost chances and the consequences of choosing your legacy over your family. Mai: My father-in-law's death changes very little for me. It won't erase the pain he caused, nor will it bring back those who suffered under both his and his ancestors' rule. But, perhaps we can finally move forward without his shadow looming over us. Izumi: My grandfather's death marks the end of an era. One filled with both triumphs and tragedies. As the heir to my father's throne, and the granddaughter of a governor of a colony named after him, it's my duty to ensure that our nation continues to move forward with honor and compassion, learning from the tyranny of the past.

Phoenix King indeed. Ozai couldn't have picked a more ironic theme for his "rule the world laughter," cause unlike his family and the world he scorched, he'll never rise from the ashes-HE IS THE ASHES. Hell, his ex-wife epically roasted him.

Even though Azula inherited her father’s evil nature there was still a small part of humanity in her to make her more than just a stereotypical femme fatale the series. Whereas Ozai was just a full out Psychopath filled with nothing but hate and an insatiable ambition. Ozai had no love for anything other than two things himself and power, he couldn’t care for his wife, son, brother or daughter. His children were nothing but blunt instruments for him to use. It’s why he favoured Azula over Zuko, Ozai only cared about her skills as a firebender not her as a daughter and how it was of great use to him. After believing that Zuko killed Aang, Ozai welcomed him back not because his so called ‘honour’ was restored, it was because he believed he finally had another tool in his arsenal that could be at his disposal at anytime.

My problem with the whole fire lord bending ending is purely that… being the fire lord doesn’t constitute being the strongest bender? Zuko was still heir to the throne despite being a weaker bender than his sister. It’s a monarchy him suddenly not being the fire lord because he lost his bending doesn’t really make sense.

Even though he was a cruel man who deserved it, spending his entire life in that cell seems cruel. To be honest, I probably would have had him serve time there, but after he finished, I’d have exiled him somewhere far away… just like he exiled Zuko. There he’d live out the rest of his days as a non bender and maybe learn some humility.

Problem is they can't release him, because if they do there would be a prominent rival for the throne running about whom people could rally behind. Even with Ozai in jail they tried to overthrow/kill Zuko in favour of his father. Imagine if they actually had Ozai amongst them as a figurehead.

Not sure how I like that fan ending for Ozai. While his stubbornness seen in the series so far could easily foreshadow such a ending, I think its too sterilized. One can argue he deserves no better but life rarely plays out "as expected". Keep in mind as "evil" and cruel Ozai was, like Azula, he was a product of his upbringing. On the contrary Zuko is so much more a compassionate, thoughtful and understanding man. I would like to think after many years in solitude and confinement Ozai would break, as humans do, and perhaps then Iroh, or maybe even Zuko through Irohs teachings, connects him to becoming more spiritual and by connecting to the spirit world he meets a spirit guide who helps him reflect on his life and how its not too late to reform and become a more balanced man. Much like the real world Puyi, last of the Chinese Qing dynasty and last Emperor, he reforms by becoming a agriculturalist, helping bring forth life as a penance from the life he destroyed, no longer a figure head nor any want to be one. Keep in mind this is a life long process, not an overnight change. He never stops being a "prisoner of the state" but does gain some freedom tending to his gardens on a estate set aside for him under watch. He retires in old age, and on his last day he has a visit with his son, an older Fire Lord Zuko and his teen granddaughter Izumi, the future Fire Lord, who even now is a Pacifist. As Zuko turns to leave, Ozai says for the first time... "Son, I am proud of the man you have become". Zuko smiles then continues on his way. Then Ozai later shares a tea with his older brother one final time before he passes away, not as a "Phoenix" King, not as Fire Lord, not even as a Noble...just as a citizen of the Fire Nation. His body finally becoming free as his spirit had become many years earlier.

nobody asked but here's my headcanon about Ozai's death Ozai ages rapidly after the series, appearing to be roughly the same age as Iroh if not a little older. around 15 years later, he falls ill. other than a doctor, he is only visited once: by Azula. Azula hears about Ozai's illness, breaks into the prison, and finally lets go of him, disowning him as her father and leaving. Ozai dies on the same day as King Bumi, and is therefore given no attention. he is only found dead the next day when Zuko comes down to see him, because the guards report that he's refusing to eat. His death is publicly revealed and everyone just continues with their lives

I feel like ozai had a bad father or mom that's why he became the way he is. Also many assassins wanted to kill him must of been stressful. Edit: I kinda wish ozai would be a changed man and turn good to be a better father to Zuko and azula.

If Avatar had been a more cynical series, Zuko's first step upon taking the throne would be to "clean house", IE purge any and all pillars and supporters of the former regime and with "purge" I mean "massacre". Starting with his father and sister simply to avoid having a resistance against his rule use them to deligitimise his position. So even Aang's act of mercy would simply mean Ozai dies on the chopping block instead of on the battlefield. I mean, a disgraced prince returns by the "mercy" of his father only to betray this mercy by violently overthrowing him with the help of foreigners, that's how things would look for the average fire nation citizen. As I said, if the series was less idealistic Zuko's position would start up so shaky he'd really have no alternative to annointing his rule with the blood of enemies and potential enemies.

He tries that and he is seen as another Azula in the making, there was no difference between Ozai's successors except for the scars they carry and the plumbing they had. Killing them doesn't make his position stronger, it makes it weaker by repeating history as brother slew brother for power. The truly cynical route is keeping Ozai as what he was, a piece of kindling used by the Fire Nation as a cautionary tale on overly ambitious warlords and a reminder everyday that the accomplishments you had made will be used by others and you will receive no credit for your bloodstained contributions Ozai's rule was a hot raging flame that burned out quickly, Azulon's flame was one that lasted a generation for their exemplars to follow.
@shiroamakusa8075

@@MrAsaqe But the thing is, neither Ozai nor Azula were unpopular in the Fire Nation. Azula's mental breakdown was not something most of the citizenry got to experience. Zuko on the other hand was seen as a traitor and one who was in league with foreigners at that. Allowing either to live would have led to near constant rebellions centered on them if the setting was less idealistic. Just look at the aftermath of the Wars of the Roses were all legitimate Yorkist aspirants had died but the enemies of the Tudors simply dressed up various scoundrels to serve the same role and managed to gain traction.

Azula was never interested in ruling the Fire Nation. In the comics, she tries to help Zuko by trying mold him into what she was raised to believe is the ideal Firelord because she does hold genuine affection for Zuko and has no interest in ruling herself. The only reason she even fought Zuko for the throne in Book 3 was because at that point in time the throne was all that she had left in her perspective. It was a mere consolidation prize for what she really wanted which was to be genuinely loved by her friends and family.

Sometimes I'm morally conflicted if Aang made the right choice by not killing him. Sure its not right to take a life, but knowing that Zuko seeing this evil man rot away in misery without ever wanting the opportunity to change while he had the chance even though he deserved it is just torture at this point. Maybe Ozai would reincarnate to a better person in his next life lol

I like to think Zuko eventually exiled Ozai where he eventually died. The only thing he had going on was the few remnant followers, who I believe are dealt with already in the comics and Azula. But other than that, he's powerless, unless he can trick a Lion Turtle or Aang into giving him back his bending.
