He just viewed the war as something that needed to be done up until he felt first hand of what the war could do by losing his only Son/Child.
@@onebigfox8310 you're correct tho. Once he got on the throne he wouldn't be as ruthless as Sozin, Azulon, and Ozai tho he would of continued the War believing it was the right thing and would of crushed the other nations if they didn't comply. He was good guy at home tho a was good at doing bad things for the war until he lost Lu-Ten.
i'd imagine they were similar to azulo and zuko; azulo was always cold hearted while zuko was warmer and empathetic. zuko was hardened by his traumatic experiences and exile. had zuko not been exiled i'd imagined that, like iroh, he'd do his duty to support the fire nation too but be more personable like iroh. i just feel the writers made a lot of parallels with the relationships between characters
Ultimately, I think Aang made the right choice in not killing Ozai. Not because of mercy, though. Because in the end, Ozai died a pathetic, broken prisoner left to rot in a cell, with everyone who had ever feared or followed him feeling nothing but contempt for him. Zuko became a beloved firelord, Ursa lived her life with her true love, and even Azula left him behind. He never walked free again, and nobody mourned him when he died, except maybe Iroh, who probably only pitied him at best. For someone like him, that's a fate worse than death.
Yes, and I think the last bit about Ursa standing up to him and leaving him visibly shaken really brings this point home. He literally controlled her all the time when he was in power and now he wasn't even able to do that. It's gotta eat away at someone like that., and having to live with that pain for the rest of his life had to be unbearable. He got what he deserved in the end.
The only person in the entire fire nation that was able to shake Ozai to his very core, was his own wife, even after so many years of separation. It says a whole lot about Ursa than it does about Ozai.
@@jorgebersabe293 Yeah, and only she had the power to do it. Someone whom he had completely dominated and controlled, instilled fear, and never would have thought shed break free, and even having a shred of some possessive sick form of love toward her.... if u can even call it that. It must have stung even more so. For her to finally break free and see him for what he truly is, and unleash it and fully confront him. Just as zuko did. Yet zukos confrontation was like a baby conpared to this. Ozai probably never felt that powerless in his life. He was the one broken. Ursa broke him His narcissim persisted even after complete humliation and defeat, even after losing his bending, losing his freedom... still he believed his own grandeur. That he can still control everything. That he still had all the power. But ursa truly broke him... he no longer had any control. He was nothing.
@@chikachikaslimshady1 And all of his evil was because of his massive inferiority complex towards Iroh. Sociopaths aren't born, are made and in the case of Ozai was because of years of being belittled, neglected, abused, treated as a spare and constantly being compared to Iroh and being reminded of how superior Iroh is.
Jorge Bersabe Yeah good point, totally agree. They even touvhed on it in the main series when they showed baby picture of Ozai. I need to read that story pertaining to Irohs and ozais childhood
@@chikachikaslimshady1 At practical effects, Ozai was the Zuko of his generation; A person with an inferiority complex towards his more talented sibling, who happened to be the favourite child of their father....except Ozai never grew up from that mindset, serving as what Zuko could have become if he let his envy and inferiority feelings consume him. If Zuko lacked Ursa and Iroh's guidance, he would have very easily turned out like Ozai.
The first time I watched Ozai name himself "Phoenix king" I laughed so hard. To think he was that cocky to be the ruler of the whole word with such a ridiculous name as Phoenix king just showed his true colors. Nothing but a selfish and cocky man.
This ‘man’ challenged a 13 year old to Agni Kai even knowing that that 13 year old wasn’t even a very good bender at that time. And oh yeah it was his SON!!
I truly believe that Ozai was the greatest villain in the show. He had a great design, a fantastic voice, and a compelling backstory, and even though he’s not sympathetic, that’s what makes him so great. Your not supposed to sympathize with Ozai, your supposed to loath him, Ozai is what drive the plot, and makes him the best villain. Sometimes, a villain you can’t sympathize with is still a great villain.
This, we never got to see them fight. I would of given anything to see this. The old uncle, the one believed to be a failure, throwing his brother around like a ragdoll
Ironic that mark hamill voiced a power-hungry, ambitious, cold, calculating, lightning-wielding, maniac who had dreamed of conquering the knowm world...palpatine would have been pleased
Even Vader and Shredder were better fathers. And let me remind you the former cut his one of kid’s hand off and let the other watch her planet get blown up while the latter kidnapped his kid and made her fight her actual father.
Ozai serves as what Zuko could have become, had he chose to follow the wrong path and let his inferiority complex and envy consume him: Both are Fire Nation royals who were envious of their more talented siblings and had abusive fathers, constantly craving their approval and trying to surpass their more talented siblings. But Zuko eventually grew out of his envy and rose over his flaws, while Ozai let himself be consumed by his own envy to the point that he didn't care who he had to stomp in order to get what he wanted. For all Ozai's complaints about Zuko, he is the one who resembles him the most physically and in backstory: Ozai was the Zuko of his generation, a man with a massive inferiority complex against their more talented and favored sibling, but unlike Zuko, Ozai never grew out of that phase. Aside from Ursa's words and Zuko's "lack of spark(which he didn't lack, he was just a late bloomer.)" Ozai hates Zuko also because he is the one who resembles him the most physically and backstory, thus reminding him of how he was so "weak and disgusting" in his youth.
Ozai: And what you do today Azula? Azula: I brutally burned an animal. Ozai: Good Azula and what about you Zuko? Zuko: *Breathes* Ozai: You are a disappointment.

Ersa is right about ozai , man who has small heart that not have any room for his father, brother, wife, son and even his daughter he use azula ,for ozai azula is just a weapon he scared of every one around him have no faith in them
Ranjith kumar+ Just imagine a story, where Azula was able to overpower him, I highly doubt that would happen though, cause Azula is scared of him, but that would be a crazy fanfic though
@@Snow-xd4rv azula isnt scared of him, he is just the only one that she feels truly cares for her. Since she felt her mother cared only for zuko. Azula is the prodigy manipulated by ozia so of course she has deep respect for her farher
I think Ozai was never meant to be a character in the same way that Zuko or Azula was, the Firelord was a means to an end, a reason for our hero to jump into action. In the episodes leading up to the finale, when Aang decides to kill the firelord or spare him, it isnt necessarily about the firelord and taking his life, its about aang's internal struggle in sacrificing his morality (to kill the firelord) in service of saving the world, Aang has to decide is taking one life necessary to save the world, in other words, the firelord isn't a character here but a vessel to tell us more about Aang and his morality, the choices he has to make, and the greater the conflict, the greater Aang's resolve.
Well clearly Azula is the best enemy in the show, but it was meant for Ozai to be mysterious. How one person can have such an affect on the world and Aang, and no one knows what he looks like.
@@thesuperframe I think this show is at its core, a "coming of age" story. It deals with serious themes, such as war, loss, responsibility etc., all of which compliment and enhance the show, aiding in making it great. However, it's really about young people finding themselves, while dealing with high stakes. Aang is coping with the huge responsibility of being the Avatar when he's just a playful kid, and Zuko is grappling with making the right choices due to pressures and presumed expectations from his father and the Fire Nation, causing conflicting loyalties. Katara is still coping with assuming big responsibilities, as she's had to after the loss of her mother. On a more finite basis (per an episode), Katara is coping with feelings of vengeance for the man that killed her mother, Sokka is coping with the insecurity and upset had for not being much help to Team Avatar, due to having no bending powers etc. The older people in the show have already found themselves - Uncle Iroh is an excellent example of this. He's old and as wise as wise can get. He's sure of himself. Sokka's sword teacher is sure of himself too, as is Aang's original fire-bending teacher, and circling back to the original topic of this conversation, Firelord Ozai is, as is General Zhai for that matter. Azula, the real main villain of the show, is also finding herself like the younger characters, hence her mental breakdown towards the end of the show. Mai and Ty Lee are of course, finding themselves too - It's all clearly there in the terrific episode, "The Beach", and they ultimately side with Zuko. Firelord Ozai having character development wouldn't have fit in with the "coming of age" story Avatar is telling as it wouldn't fit with the show's take. Him not having character development is also perfectly logical, considering he is an adult and knows how to get what he wants out of life now.
Don't forget the shapshifter from gravity falls even thought he only appeared in one episode he was frightning I got chils when he said"should I be one?or the other?how about both!"and then turned into a grotesque mix of the twins like the creature from The Thing movie. If there is one person in the world who can make one character memorable in just one episode that would be mark hamil!
Super King Ghidorah I mean he redirected lighting at Ozai and it pissed Ozai off so that kinda counts little bit but it’s not the same as how aang took his ass down and removed his bending.
zuko redirecting ozai's lightning was enough of a physical reckoning between the two. in an actual duel zuko would have been outmatched. plus, zuko understood that it had to be the avatar to take down ozai.
From seeing what a horrible father ozai was, it motivates me to be the best dad possible to my kids . Cuz some parents don't take account of how the mental and psychological effect their actions and words has on their kids. Zuko's delusional motive to capture the avatar , and Azula's heartless, perfectionist mentality was all Ozai's fault. And he deserved to be locked up like the bum father he was to not just Zuko, but to Azula as well. Cuz her mental breakdown in the final battle against Zuko and Katara was mostly Ozai's fault, but also Ursa's fault too for showing favoritism to Zuko
Shrek is the best franchise and it tops anything. That’s not true. She was in a an abusive relationship/marriage, and she had to take care of Zuko constantly. She tried to reach out to Azula, but she was very far gone.
Ursa couldn’t really do as much as she could with Azulon and Ozai controlling everyone. She didn’t want to be there or be married to him in the first place. She is also abused by Ozai.
It’s funny how Ozai own narcissism and pride lead to his downfall. He tried to exert his power and banished both his wife and son, yet that was what began his path to defeat. In doing so, he inadvertently ended up carving zuko path to becoming a better man and defeating him.
The fire sages weren't wrong about combining the fire lord bloodline with Roku's bloodline, it just didn't go as what Ozai and Azulon had hope. After all, Izumi and her son Iroh still carry on Zuko's bloodline and Iroh became the youngest general of the Republic's army.
Ozai and Thanos, two great villains notorious for their extended buildup of doing absolutely nothing but completely shattering expectations once they got their asses up off their chair.

A child is 100% likely to get a mental disorder in their life if they have lived with a parent that has one ... seems like Azula got more than just one disorder. her mother is Depressed and angsty over her childern, her father is a pyromanic psycopath with alot of self esteem amoung many other things...no wonder she is so messed up. take this with a grain of salt since their world is fictional and everyone would most likely kill either.

naw it’d be way way way too sus ozai was in the height of his youth there is no way does that happen an she makes it thru the night. especially with all the spies an the letters etc.. yeah she’d be dead the same day. azulon was No fool the old guy was as sharp as razor blade a strategic an tactical mastermind the one whom azula was named after she would’ve got found out within moments.
Ozai: I'll be honest with you son, me burning you was an accident. I was aiming at your right but my fire went to your left. That's how I suck at aiming. Zuko: Then why the hell did you banished me for dickhead!? Ozai: Banish? Oh... yeah... what I meant back then was to the soldiers was to "bandage him" not banish. But since I mumbled it, it's a bit embarrassing to correct myself in front of many people... sorry about that!
It is kind of funny and tragic at the same time how the bullying victim becomes the bully himself. Ursa calls Ozai a "small man" when he is behind bars, defeated and humiliated and without his bending while she had spent more than five years fearing even the sound of his name so much that she chose to erase everything related to him from her memory for a good while, including her own children because they were connected not only to Ozai and his manipulation and cruelty but also because she feared for them and she didn't want to feel guilty or worried for their fate so she chose to erase her memory till Zuko found her and changed her mind. Not that it isn't incredibly symbolic to show Ursa finally breaking the circle of fear and humiliation and face the man that ruined her life or see how gradually Ozai took all those blows till the final one where his wife his first actual victim got free from him but I cannot help it but notice this detail. Ozai was definitely not a small man. He wasn't some scared bully who was only big talk and no action. Yes he was a heartless man, most likely a clinical psychopath but he was always putting his words in action. Plus he did play with her all her life. Even the fact that he told her to leave so she couldn't poison him instead of killing her is another proof that he wanted to hurt her especially since she still loved another man and she was defying him trying to break the circle of his abuse and she wrote a false letter that even for a second damaged his ego. He said he was certain that Zuko was his son because he watched Ursa even before she was married to him but that servant saw the letter and even for one second he was considered humiliated in the eyes of that servant. So no unfortunately for everyone Ozai was not just a small man and he was capable of making his threats action. Also Ursa even if it was great for her to finally stop fearing Ozai, she did it while he was safely behind bars and without his power. I am not saying this is bad writing. Right the opposite. It is the most realistic thing that one who has been terrified their entire life manage to break through that after the subject that causes them terror is rather weakened or defeated or dying. Another reason of some amazing facts of this series.
Actually, Ozai is a small man. He is a man who craves for everything that his father and brother has, yet can never get it. Azulon preferred Iroh and had no problem with killing Ozai's offsprings just to prove a point. Iroh admits he had seen Ozai be a sore loser whenever he loses to his older brother in a game of Pai Sho, implying that this has happened many times. Ozai always had the inferiority complex and he projects it on anyone he deems to be weaker than himself. That's why he's a bully. If you want to know Ozai's true character, look at his reaction when he encounters an enraged Avatar with the intent to kill him. He has no bravado or even the blood-knight thrill of a challenge. He was scared like a child and flee like a coward. Underneath all of his scariness and firebending, he is just the personification of Prince Zuko's worst traits given human form.
@@evanbao93 Wanting something you cannot have is not a sign of being a small man. Imagine yourself want to go to university and study the thing you want and the laws of your state and your own fafter tell you "Absolutely not! Only your brother /sister can do that!" wouldn't you be angry too? Azulon was another abusive parent. That doesn't mean Ozai is a small man. A parent should never pick favorites yet alone in such a monstrous way. Once again Azulon preferring Iroh and wanting to kill Ozai's off springs to prove it doesn't make Ozai a small man. It only makes Azulon a horrible father and grandfather. Also if Ozai was really a small man he wouldn't have worked his butt off at firebending forms all his life. No matter what someone can say of Ozai and what a great psychopath he was, no one can blame him that he took things for granted. He worked for what he got (even if in the end it was his final scheme that gave him the throne). Azulon was as much of a scoundrel as Ozai was. That doesn't make him a small man. Being a sore loser once again is not a sign of someone being an old man is just signs that you have bad temper and bad character. Also Ozai appears to be a clinical psychopath and psychopaths are known for their sudden tantrums and irregular temper. Ozai loses it because in his mind failure is horrible no matter where it comes from (mentality Azula gets later). If Azula plays a friendly volleyball game like a life and death battle the same way Ozai thinks that losing anything humiliates him. Even if we take that someone has an inferiority complex that doesn't necessarily make them small. Like I said he did work to get what he wanted with all the means he had and at the same time started off a war against the known world by using everyone around him. There are many types of bullies and not all of them are harmless brats who are just peacocks without any mental strength to make their threats facts. So... Seeing a stronger opponent and try to run away from destruction makes you a small man? Azula ran away multiple times too when she knew that she had no chance of winning a battle. Facing Avatar to full avatar form was clear suicide and Ozai was neither a fool nor was suicidal. He ran around in circles trying to either avoid Aang completely or regroup and find a solution. Aang was running around a lot before (Combustion Man being only one of those times or even Ozai himself. He even locked himself into a stone till he managed to get to Avatar state) . The only act I would count as "small man" was when Ozai tried to strike Aang on the back but taking under consideration the "win or die" mentality of his, that again explains it. Running away was a sign that he found someone stronger than him so he got scared? Even if that is the case human instinct of self-preservation is one of the strongest around. We often see the usual "hero go forth even if it means their death" but let's face it the normal reaction is to get scared. The one I truly appreciate as perfectly brave is Zuko who did face his father and his sister and even the Avatar knowing full well that he had neither the Avatar's power nor the ultimate skill of his family at bending. Another act might as well be the fact that he sent assassins after his wife's previous love. Knowing though full well how much he wanted to hurt her we can tell why he did it. Plus let's face it the writers want to make him a villain in every way. "Small man" hints someone that is all big talk without actions. From what I saw Ozai was more than capable of doing what he was promising. A bad father? No doubt. A sore loser, psychopath without consciousness? Absolutely. Small man? No I don't think so from what I saw. Not as a total at least. In any case she said that to him only after he was completely harmless against her. Plus she even decided to erase the memory of her very children because they are connected to him. That doesn't make her much greater than what she accuses him of. Of course living years under fear and insecurity can change someone forever and scar them for life but still...
@@matthewmorrison2748 I personally am skeptical about that. As you said he nearly ruled 80 per cent of his world. He was a good schemer and commanded an army. Now what makes a man great or small is debatable. Would you call Hitler a small man? Around 80 per cent of Europe will say no. He was a madman? Absolutely. But what he promised he did. That's how I see Ozai. I can't call a "small man" someone who started a crusade of this size and didn't even cower to face the Avatar (even if he underestimated him) to get his purpose to be "small" because he seemed capable of making his threats into action. So yeah I am skeptical about that statement. As well as who and when they called him "small". Ursa called him that when he too had no more weapons to fight back but empty intimidation when he was stopped off his power and locked in a cell. That's why I kind of see this pattern here. Just saying.
@@ccf3195 you can actually see Aang shoot a comet powered fire blast a couple times during their fight. But because of his lack of experience and since he had the other 3 elements he was able to wield, he chose to use it sparingly.
His fire IS stronger. Watch the fight again, his fire is just as strong as Ozai‘s. Ozai just has much MUCH more experience as a firebender which means he is a master in that field while Aang is only a normal bender. The fire is stronger but Ozai is better at it basically.
I still find it wrong that Ozai's character never was explained completely like Zuko's and Azula's. I would love to learn the reason How initially sweet and innocent child eventually became the heartless monster (we can't say for sure it was Azulon's fault entirely)

Honestly, I think Ozai makes Thanos look more like a merciful Warlord/father. If Thanos and Ozai switched places, at least Thanos would only destroy half of the Earth Kingdom. And even Thanos regrets on being Too Harsh on his own children, something Ozai will never admit in regards to his bad parenting.
Thanos killed his own daughter There is no way u think thanos is any better Thanos u saw it from his perspective of story Why u think he looks peacefull Thanos even killed his daughter parents and then adopted her Hr wiped out her entire earth
Bro Thanos didn’t wipe out half the universe for balance. That’s the most stupid thing ever in a movie. In the comics he did it to impress a death goddess.
Ozai is an extremely dark villain with no remorse for any of his actions. most villains you can look at and see that they could redeem themselves or are not to far gone. but not with Ozai..... he wanted the throne so bad that he betrayed his brother Iroh just after his son was killed in the battle of ba sing se. then after fire lord Azulon ordered Ozai kill his own son Zuko for his treacherous proposal for the throne he allowed his wife to murder Azulon so that Ozai could assume the throne and Zukos life would be spared. then he burned Zuko in an Agni kai leaving a permanent scar on his face all because he spoke out of turn in a war meeting. then he proposed a plan to destroy the earth kingdom using Sozins comet. then he attempted to murder his own son during the eclipse using lightning. and then he seemed to have no problem trying to murder a child AKA Aang in order to rid the world of the avatar and he could become the supreme ruler of the world. yeah Ozai is a horrible villain and is not redeemable in any way.
I wonder if Iroh ever visited his younger brother Ozai when he was in jail? Bc if there was anyone who would have a big enough heart to forgive Ozai for everything he did it would be his big brother Iroh. I just wish we knew if they ever interacted after Ozai's imprisonment and am very curious to how those conversations would have went between them.
I see him saying “I wish I could have done right by you and Azula like I have with Zuko I can forgive every last horrible unimaginable horror you have committed to the four nations but first you have to accept and acknowledge them only then will you ever earn forgiveness from me”
Ozai is a monster, he never loved his children. He favored, Azula but only saw her as his tool for success. He treated Zuko awfully, just to hurt Ursa, over a letter.
Vader: Luke...I am your father Luke: NOOOOOOOOOOOO a ton of years later Luke: Zuko...I am your father Zuko: I don't care I'm gonna take you down Luke: yeah I hate the dark side too
I actually want to know more about the line of Fire lords before Sozin, and since he erased all evidence of their existence, that makes me want to learn about them even more. Honestly, who has the guts to erase his own father from the line of fire lords?
Sozin's Dad Probably Did the samething Ozai did With Zuko but unlike his Great Grandson He's not as forgiving as him so he probably Assassinated him Like Ozai did to Azulan.
@@BuyorsellwithkimSozin and Roku were best friends until fully-grown adults, meaning Sozin was warm and loving at the time. His father technically raised him right. It wasn't until after Roku came back that Sozin talked about the invasion as a Fire Lord. Sozin = Fire Lord = his father already died. I'm pretty sure all the previous Fire Lords did not raise their heir to be as ruthless as Sozin's generations. My guess is that Sozin burned off all the evidence because he doesn't want the later generation to learn about the Fire Nation's past, he (thinking his army will concurs the whole world) doesn't want any young to know the fire empire (if won) used to be very weak. Sozin said his nation is in a place it has never been in term of wealth. He also got the avatar which will make it easy as heck to take over any country (as a lot of them are not civilized). Using that wealth to colonized other kingdoms make his nation even greater in wealth and power
OMG! Finally, the video is here. So excited to watch this because I want to get to know more about Ozai's character considering he's the main villain in the ATLA series. Thank you!
Ozai is the perfect example of the introvert who's never going outside and thinking that he's the king of the house and can do whatever he wants but once he's going outside, he's finally defeated by the cruel outside world and needs to process the reality for a long time.
I mean... Even though Ozai was a giant dickwad to his kids and wife plus the fact that he wanted to burn down an entire kingdom, I can't deny that he's rather... *hot* 😏
Samuel Woolwine IV even a comic of when Azulon was Firelord and Iroh and Ozai as kids and them growing up in the royal family. And even more backstory on Iroh like what they were going to do in the Orginal series and also Lu Tins relationship with Zuko
Ozai is an incredible representation of abusive parents. The way he treated his wife and son was absolutely disgusting and cruel. The one thing that absolutely disgusting about Ozai was when he gave Zuko his scar when his son refused to fight him and wanted only forgiveness.
Ozai's line during the final battle "you're weak, just like the rest of your people. they did not deserve to exist in this world. in my world! prepare to join them... prepare to die!" this line alone tells you so much about his character. he only values power. and he is basically like hitler, he wants to rid the world of all weak genetics and leave behind only the strongest genes. he does not believe the air benders and I assume water benders and earth benders as well do not deserve to exist in this world because they are inferior to his power.
But like how can you hate someone who looks just like you! Like bruh Zuko looks deadass like his father specially when he gets old. A lot of self hate if you ask me 😪
Ah, MovieFlame making a video about The Life of Fire Lord Ozai? To that I say "Fire at will, Admiral."....Things are about to get hot in here for sure.
Wow, I just recently saw the video about Zukos mother and found him fascinating and now you make this so soon after? Many thanks. Keep it up with the great videos!
I think that whenever Zoko redirected Ozais lighting and behind him the flag of the fire nation fell. I think this was subtle foreshadowing that Ozai’s version of the fire nation would inevitably fall
What a satisfying end to his cruel reign! Being beaten my a child, all his power being stripped away and thrown chained up in a cell. A nice, pathetic end for a man like him. It's so perfect Aang didn't kill him. And this is coming from someone who agrees with killing dangerous tyrants to save the world. If it were me, I would have killed Ozai. I would have wanted Aang to kill Ozai. But I am so glad he didn't. It's so perfect for Aang because he has a duty as the last Airbender to truly keep his culture alive. The previous Airbender Avatar could do it because there were still many Airbenders. But Aang stuck to his moral compass and it did him good in the end. And besides, if he killed Ozai, he would probably die a matyr. God, this show is amazing!
And curiously, both Ozai and Joffrey wanted the approval of their abusive and neglectful fathers. Both also share that at their core they are nothing more than small, insecure people who are so desperate to look big and powerful and with hearts so small that they never let anyone inside them, not even themselves.
