Zwift FTP Builder Reviewed: How Many Watts Gained in 12 Weeks?

In an attempt to get ourselves fit and ready for the 2024 triathlon season, we focused our pre-season training on building our FTP. Instead of paying big bucks for a plan, we pulled up Zwift's 10-12 Week FTP Builder program and followed it consistently for 11 weeks. Prior to beginning the program we completed Zwift's Ramp Test - and we did the same at the end of the program. Did we gain substantial watts in the program and was it worth our time? We break it all down and give our pros, cons and recommendations about the Zwift 10-12 Week FTP Builder.

15 watts in 12 weeks is no joke. Great work ! I’ll be spending the remainder of the year building the bike. Week by week consistency is key you are correct

We’re very happy with the result! I’m sure there might have been other options to make bigger gains - as some coaches boast wild numbers from their athletes - but we wanted to take our time and mainly enjoy the process. Which we did! Hope you’re doing well. All the best in your bike focus.

@@TeamSaundersTri 15 watts in 12 weeks is a lot. Anyone else getting gains bigger than that must be close to their first time cycling, thank you girls I hope to see you on the circuit this year, T100 Vegas maybe ? I’ll be there !

Great video. Awesome so hear from someone/s that has put in the effort and consistency to measure the results. I have used the program a bit but only the first 5 weeks or so as I also found that the full program does not allow for hard run and swim training as well.

Thank you for watching and taking time to comment. That’s great (confirming) feedback that this plan would be challenging in-season. It’s definitely good for off-season if you want to do a serious bike focused block.

I tried their shorter 6 week FTP builder plan. Liked it and improved my ramp test result by about 10% over that period. Started the Build me up plan after that but completely burned out on that in the first 4 weeks as that's 4 high intensity rides per week and that just didn't work alongside the swimming and running.

We looked at the 6 week plan, but we had a long window so that’s why we opted for the 10-12 week plan. Great work on getting that 10% gain! Oof…4 high intensity rides a week sounds insane on its own…can’t imagine adding swim and run. Hope you’ve found something to balance it all out. Happy training. Thanks for the comment!

About to spend two and a half months at altitude before returning to sea level. I’m stuck just under 300 watts for my FTP. If using the plan can get me another 13-18 watts by mid June, it’ll make summer riding back at sea level more fun and enjoyable

Give it a go and let us know! Definitely nothing wrong with riding consistently and throwing in some challenge. 300 is a great benchmark. We hope you hit it and enjoy your time at altitude!

G’day,well done with your FTP gains,just wondering if you stick to the workout plan does it mean you shouldn’t race on Zwift as it would interfere with the schedule ? Thanks

Zwift doesn’t really give any guidance to that, but it could be tough to add a hard race into the week and still properly recover. But it might not be too detrimental from time to time. You could even swap out a threshold session and race once a week in place of the workout. Lots of options! Mainly, just keep it fun and to what you want to do to enjoy it. Getting on the bike consistently is where the gains will come. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Get on the bike and ride! Find something that gets you excited - a race, a Zwift challenge… any riding is better than nothing. Or even, start the plan and see where it takes you. Maybe it’ll inspire you to find that consistency. Let us know how it goes! Thanks for the comment.

12 week builder is good to peak in 12 weeks. But it’s not sustainable in the long run. You can train to climb Mount Everest, but you can’t live there.

We’re just raising the ceiling with consistency. Over time we’ll keep moving the needle up but will train smart in-season and out of season to set ourselves up for that success.
