Zwift Hub Smart Trainer: Hands-On After A Few Rides/Full Details

Everything you need to know about the new Zwift Hub smart trainer, from the tech specs to the ride feel, to how well it works, and whether it works with apps like TrainerRoad, Rouvy, and more! Buy the Zwift Hub here (amzn.to/3PRGKVH), link helps support the channel, much appreciated!!!
I dig into all the details after a few weeks of riding.
Today, Zwift announced the Zwift Hub, a $499 smart trainer that will likely slaughter pricing in the market. Well, maybe. First, it requires Zwift to make it accurate. But assuming they do that, the product has specs that are roughly half the cost of most of their other competitors.
Now, before we go too far, it’s important to know one key detail: Zwift didn’t make this trainer. At least not entirely. Instead, they’re rebranding the JetBlack Volt smart trainer (which I reviewed a year ago), and repricing it significantly lower than the $849 it previously was. That very capable direct drive trainer did quite well in my testing, arguably better than some of the large trainer companies have done at the same price point.
I am part of the Amazon Associates program, and some links may earn me a commission at no cost to you.

Simple but the colour coding is so effective. Assuming sound performance and accuracy this is going to be very compelling at the proposed prices.

Clarity during the purchase and install process seems like something Zwift has really focussed on here. 👌 Seems smart considering Zwift really really really wants new (or beginner) cyclists to hop on and subscribe to their platform. I'm guessing Zwift will offer some sort of first month free with this trainer purchase. (Everyone else offers something like this so why wouldn't they) It's all about those long term subscription dollar bills ya'll. 💰 Great review as always Ray!

Zwift holds most of the cards here. They can afford to sell this device at pretty much zero margin knowing that they will get the repeat payments in perpetuity. This will definitely cripple the market for midrange trainers... If they can maintain supply, it will be interesting to see what happens to the market in the coming years. I don't think this will upend the top-tier market. People paying for those devices are doing it for the accuracy and ride feel enhancements... That said, they may have to rethink their proving strategy as 2X the cost of the Hub will be a tough pill to swallow (given Zwift unbreaks the firmware).

It's just about lowering the barrier to entry to indoor cycling. The cost of the subscription is already great value (considering the reliability, community, and frequency of events and races, etc). The hardware element has always been something of the wildcard with people's Zwift experience potentially being so different based on the hardware they're using to ride. For me - if this were more rudimentary, it would still be of great value. It's almost undeniable at this price point. I've been considering updating my trainer to the new Kickr. Now? I'll probably just plump for this and save the difference and keep my wife happy :D

With the current Zwift Hub Strava challenge offering a £/$50 discount I'm tempted. I've had an original Wahoo Kickr since 2015 but its showing its age now. I think I could sell that and would pay for most of this. The flywheel is slightly smaller on the Hub but its silent, more accurate and supports thru axle/disc brakes. Surely a no brainer?

Certainly disruptive. Realistically what Zwift should have started off with when they decided to get into this area. If they sort out the niggles then certainly will be a winner. Not sure Garmin/Tacx or Wahoo will be thanking them any time soon though. Kudos for the thought put into the setup process. Nicely done.

The price point does 3 things. Makes upgrading from wheel on a doable thing for that market, it makes it easier for new cyclists to get in (timing just before winter was perfect!) and this is the big one - It keeps the other hardware makers honest with their pricing. I think the popularity of Peloton made them think they could keep prices high. Zwift is about to show that there's a whole other market out there. I shared this with 2 buddies that have been thinking of trainers, but put off by current prices. It works for them, cause Zwift just wants more people cycling indoors and paying their subscription. Wahoo shouldn't complain, they've got their app too. It's the other hardware makers that will be up the creek.

From a manufacturing perspective, I suppose it’s a game as to which is cheaper - 1. Paint orange or blue for feet or just make the bolt hole spacing non-uniform so that it would be physically impossible to mount the wrong feet. Guess we know which is cheaper…paint.

Very smart, and welcome, development from Zwift. I wish this had been available when I started with Zwift 18 months ago. I'm happy with my Kickr Core, but starting up with Zwift and setting up the trainer all at the same time was a headache. The colour coding and nifty measuring card are the sorts of basic but brilliant ideas that other companies (that have been in the trainer business for many years) will be asking their product development teams, "Why have we never thought of that?"
@toadlguy
@toadlguy 2 года назад
So, over on BikeRadar YT channel they said Zwift said they have their own “manufacturing process” to improve accuracy and streamline things, which I hope does not mean that there might be something other than software that could be causing the accuracy issues you have been having. 😱 They also noted that the claimed accuracy of 2 1/2 percent means that this trainer wouldn’t be accurate enough to use in Zwift racing.

I hope Zwift changes this. Specifically, the requirement. The problem with the requirement is that it's not based on real testing. I have zero issues with a real requirement that is tied to +/- 2% (I think it's great actually). But, it shouldn't be based on marketing specs, it should be based on some test protocal that awards entrance into the Zwift racing realm, since some trainers that on-paper meet +/- 2%, don't in reality, and then others that on paper say +/- 2.5% (like the JetBlack Volt), are actulaly closer to +/- 1% in reality.

I have a Kickr and Kickr Climb as well, like them a lot but in my opinion the Zwift Hub is a much better deal for newcomers that want to Zwift. I think Wahoo isn't too happy about this launch. The only reason I'd buy a Core now is if you want to be in the Wahoo "ecosystem" (for example control the Kickr from a Wahoo Bolt/Roam) or want that Kickr Climb compatibility. The slightly heavier flywheel or .5% accuracy increase is negligible.

@@eidrag Apparently. Fab trainer, but when I got a 'red light of death' UK distributer couldn't fix or give me a replacement so store I bought it from gave me a Direto instead. Shame, as aside for Zwift connectivity issues that developed, it was an amazing erg trainer.

Will this be compatible with the blacklist of bikes including my 2022 Emonda? without eating through my chainstays?

@Rainmaker, do you think that Jet Black volt are gonna be able to hold the quality , volume and support given the numbers that Zwift can sell, not to mention the price

Generally speaking when it comes to electronics manufacturing, it’s the lower volume stuff that’s harder to hold manufacturing to quality levels. Having more volume usually gives you more leeway in terms of a hammer. JetBlack has been doing this for a while, so I don’t anticipate any issues, assuming they continue quality control as they’ve been doing.

Can you easily change out the cassette's on here? If I wanted to interchange between my 10 speed road bike / 11 speed tri bike - would I be able to? I saw that they sell 8, 9, 10, 11 speed, so I wasn't sure if that forces you to stick to one cassette based on design

Will this be one of those "startup moves" where they sell a product/service at a loss to create a monopoly and then hike the price at a later stage?

Zwift Exec: It's a JetBlack trainer but we want it to have a distinctly Zwift flair Zwift Marketing: *adds paint and Zwift logos* Zwift Software Engineers: *Breaks firmware*

This essentially will kill off the lower-priced Tacx trainers. This is cheaper and is rated for more watts and gradient than the Fluxs

What’s the best trainer as far as connectivity? As far as ease of use and being able to connect everything needed.

Would you recommend this over the Elite Direto XR @$525 brand new?

Reading Ray's comment a few months ago it would appear the accuracy issues are sorted? I have a fenix 6 smart watch. Can people confirm I can't connect this (I'll be on laptop or tablet) to the zwift to add my HR? I might be wrong here. Do any smart trainers allow smart watch to connect for HR? Cheers all.
