Heyo - I'm a dancer who wants to put her moves on wheels! I have about 15 years experience dancing ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and hip hop, but I stopped after my dance teacher passed. Stepping away from the dance world was due to a combination of the pain from her death, along with my own body image challenges.
I remember something one of my dance teachers taught me was a mix of tap and breakdance. I'm not sure what that would be called, but it was cool! Now I'm on a journey of learning how to combine roller skating and breakdance, AKA "Jam Skating".
Follow along with me on my journey of learning, progressing and teaching jam skating moves until I master them! I want us all to look fly out here!
**Disclaimer: I'm coming from the perspective of a black, female, queer person and at times, this will shine through in my content 🏳️🌈
You got this! It’s definitely not easy but these drills will help you with balance in general, even if you don’t master the crazy legs move right away 😁💥
Welcome back. I started skating my neighborhood during Covid, took lessons at my local rink when the neighborhood got dangerously busy, and just recently joined Derby. Derby is still re-finding its feet (wheels?) after Covid, so while the desire to teach is present, some new skaters may be better off looking for “Intro to Derby” bootcamps. You will need to have some level of self-direction. Ask for drills to practice in a corner, or have a list of skills you wish to learn! Good luck to us all in finding our squad!
I completely agree! I always tell people to join a nearby roller derby fresh meat program if they want to learn how to skate because that is a quick way to learn! I learned fast by working at a rink and just being around derby people 😆
Ok, so it isn't just me seeing it. Amazing because the "little cliques" weird me out and honestly look weak. Like bruh y'all are just skaters fam ease up cause ya not like that off of the skate floor 😂. Let beginners learn and enjoy the process man. After I noticed it here, I just go and don't speak to most people. I skate because my son asked me to go and it became fun. Self proclaimed professionals in those cliques are weird. Other ppl in there are alright tho. 😂😂💯 Great video!
So true! Just glad I’m not alone in feeling the frustrations with the skate community sometimes. Overall good experiences, but the bad ones can be so discouraging to newbies if it’s their first impression!!
I just came across your video today in my feed and I'm so glad I did. After a little bit of practice today I am now able to transition and keep my momentum afterwards. I'm a visual learner and your video made it all come together for me. I've been struggling so long trying to transition so thank you for sharing!
Yeah I wished I would have watched ur videos before I got my impala the wheels bearings they are sooooo tight I have my y tool the adjustable wrench and the 1/2 wrench still no luck certain moves I can’t don’t or it feels awkward I called the customer service and they were no help they told me look up RU-vid videos 😂😂😂😂 mind u I looked that up beforehand lol I am going to save my money to get moxi or sure grip from roller skate nation .
Those skate dancers who call people "posers" for augmenting a move to work for them must not have much creativity. Everybody doesn't do things the same. Its what makes us human.
I’m SUPER glad that I found you on RU-vid this mrng… I was looking to learn how to pump with spinning and you broke it down like I was a two year old.. Thank You… 🫶🏾
@@jaedevrick6621 I absolutely love them! I own the Sure-grip boardwalk skates and actually went skating outside at a local school track yesterday. They are super smooth. Eventually I will buy the same one in different colors.
Thank you so much! I was so frustrated with the duck step explanation. I’m quite scientific so you breaking down the mechanics of the move has helped me so much! I’m going to keep drilling this. Subscribed! 💜
Thank you so much for subscribing! As the weather warms up I’ll be starting up more tutorials 😁💥 a lot of people said they like how I break things down, so thank you for that amazing feedback
Stretching is so important and I also don’t do it enough - I’d love to make a skate stretching warm-up and cool-down video demonstration once I figure out my own routine!
@@WheelYourOwnWay I did finally start a hip mobility routine. Apx a month ago. I AM SO GLAD I DID! I cannot believe the difference. My squats, deadlift, lunges... all lifts are so much stronger and deeper. Plus, I figured out I had very poor mobility in my left ankle. I am working on that at the same time. Two thumbs up for hip mobility exercises!
As a black beginner skater, I’ve had mixed experiences. There are some ppl that were welcoming with their stories/tips and I’ve met some ppl that was not so nice… like, “you skate so stiff and you need to learn to relax etc.” and “you’ve been skating for almost a yr and that’s all you’ve learned?!” I went into skating to get away from my depression and it worked. But lately I have been so discouraged at my progress bc I’m a single mom who lost my job and going thru hard times. I haven’t practiced as often as I should. But I just have to tune them out at the rink and remember to have fun ❤
Wow thanks for sharing this. I’m sorry that you’ve experienced some of the negativity that people can bring to skating. I still get discouraged at my progress honestly most days! I don’t have kids so I can’t imagine having to carry all that. Having FUN is absolutely the most important thing! I hope you have been able to get out there again 😊
