Ooofff… I’m late, but I heard a lot of buzz about this book. I was fascinated with The Color of Water from McBride’s years ago, so I figured this would’ve been as poignant. It’s a lot of drama… some of the things it touched on I felt was a bit much and ran on too much. Love your review 🙏🏿

BUT I FINISHED it two weeks ago and I find myself thinking about Kiara sooo much :((( I just wanna give her the biggest hug everrrr. She was treated so so miserably and she’s the sweetest soul ever :/ I reallyyyy liked the writing and the story was really deep and interesting to me. I’m from a completely different environment and this is the first time I read a book about sex work and these topics including police brutality. I would definitely read more of this author’s work. I also didn’t like how it needed but I also think this is such a realistic ending too. Thank you for the review :>

I love your review of this book! You did a great job of not revealing any spoilers. I love this book, Ali and Hassan were the kindest, purest characters ever! The book flowed well, and I loved the introduction to Afghan culture and language. Subscribing for more book reviews! x
@11:21. Totally agree, about women who stay & endure such traumatic & abusive behavior, let alone with your children. That’s something I truly hated while reading ( still not finished), instead he choose to smoke it away & bottle it up herself. I was trying to research & see if her parents are still together not sure if the end of the book reveals it.
@@brithneyorosco I am re-entering the chat. With a deep sigh, man this provoked so many feelings that I’ve despised her dad😅🤣. This was truly a great book & safiya is a voice for many who’ve been raised in religious/strict households. All in all, I expected it to play out as it did with her father. I wonder if her siblings sought out therapy in the midst of healing from this trauma.

Love your review of this book. Just finished reading this. My understanding about the Ethiopian King was he came from the only African country that had not been colonized. I wasn’t aware he practiced the Christian faith but I thought the country not being colonized despite efforts to colonize it was one of the appeals of this particular king. As for the ending where you mentioned it could not be you - if you are speaking on the forgiveness part - I felt like she was trying to work on that; not necessarily complete forgiveness. I totally agree her mom should definitely have her own book!!
