Question about drifting ...when you throw out the rear and are in the slide, is the accelerator used for forward push/grip or to make it slip more?

In other words if it's too far out does stabbing the gas improve and push through the curve or let the rear slip further out causing a spin? Does this make sense?

Me and my brother lived on a gravel curvy road to our house. We would drift up and down the road every day to go to school/park... the neighbors hated it :).
