Missions of lilbrowhydaw Channel (in no particular order, at least as far as you're concerned):
1. Demonstrate that, while occasionally ultra challenging, truly wild birds are plentiful on SD public land & can be put in the vest all season long if you & your dog know what you're doing.
2. Show off my dog. He's not perfect by some standards, but he's pretty damn close by mine.
3. Make some videos that I get a kick out of. If somebody else likes them, great.
4. Put my videos somewhere I can access them any time, any place.

Morning Just watching some hunting videos thinking about the upcoming season here… One thing you mentioned in this video is that you were trying out noise reduction solutions. Just curious if you came up with anything good for a GoPro?
@lilbrowhydaw
@lilbrowhydaw 24 дня назад
@@firstlast-us3fp unfortunately no. Nothing that doesn't make the camera inaccessible anyway. So after discussing with Lucas (JCW Outdoors), I figured if GoPro's integral noise reduction features are good enough for him, they should work for me too. I can't believe summer's getting away from us, but that means there are only 73 days to the resident opener here! Ace is getting excited!

Congratulations on an awesome season. Thanks for all the great videos and tips. I've watched you and Lucas for years while living in the western states chasing quail and chukar. I moved to SD last summer and love chasing these birds on flat lands instead of climbing mountains. I've learned a lot from your videos and can't wait to see more this upcoming season.

Another technique to roughly judge age-if you grab the lower mandible (fancy word for beak), with thumb and forefinger, and lightly shake the bird if it doesn’t break, probably an adult. Now, this method is less accurate as the season goes on into winter. We used this when I was in Grad-School checking hunter harvest opening weekend. Drop us line this summer Brent, let us know how nesting season went. Thanks to you & Ace for sharing! My Springer has Ace to live-up to!

Glad you guys ended the season well. I hunted that field once and never made it back. I hunted counter clock wise and only got halfway and my hunt was over with my limit. It's great to see there's many birds left to repopulate. I agree, it was a surprisingly phenomenal year - record year for me as well.

Nice video Brent. Crazy seeing you in t shirt and no snow. Last week on the 19th. of February I actually heard two sandhill cranes already back in central Wi.and then two days later I saw a killdeer in same area on the 21 st. This is the earliest I have ever seen this in my lifetime. Usually first week of March is when I usually see them migrate back.

I hope you continue next year. Those birds are so hardy and that SD habitat and low people population keeps the birds high. God Bless.

Immensely enjoy your videos. Thank you. Brings me back to my youth hunting pheasants in Central and western Minnesota with my Browning A-5 and springer spaniel, Rip. Some trips to SD too. Moved to new hampshire 40 years ago and there are only released pheasants on a few small fields. So switched to ducks on the salt marshes and a lab that can handle the tides.

Please tell me about Ace. What bloodline is he.? Also, tell me about your camera. I thought I heard you call it a GoPro. What model is it? Love watching your dog work love watching wild birds. I live in New Hampshire and there are no wild pheasant. I am lucky, and I get to hunt on a preserve that I am a member of, but I know it is not the same by a long shot. I also get a hug ruffed grouse. We have plenty of those.

Mark, thanks for watching. Glad you enjoy the videos. My camera is a GoPro 11, & I use Shotcut editing software. It's free, user friendly, & doesn't leave a watermark. I barely begin to use it to its full capability. Ace will be 5 in April, so he's got 5 seasons under his collar. He's really getting good & meets my expectations. Obviously I don't train to a terribly high level, but we're lucky to be able to hunt over 30 times a season. I got him from Ten Bar Ranch Springers in Lake Andes, SD. He's my 3rd once in a lifetime springer in a row.

Yes, we shortened the Illinois season in the 90’s, eliminating the January segment. But it was range deterioration, isolation of winter habitat, and hen energetics associated with disturbances that did it. Thankfully, SD is like apples & oranges compared to Illinois. So far, looks like your winter is a good one for carryover, keep our fingers & paws crossed.

The first rule they teach you is you can’t stockpile pheasants, which is true; however, what percentage of those January roosters make-it to the following Spring & Fall? Dispersal helps pheasants persist in high numbers, I’m just trying figure-out what that January extension means to long term population trends? Winter weather? Make for a good study. Thanks Brent & Ace!

Another excellent video. I assume when the rooster falls onto a private landowner’s property, it’s legal to go on their land with your dog to retrieve it, correct? And that is why you leave you gun near the road rather than carrying it onto the property with you?

I've not road hunted before so decided to give it a shot on the last Sunday afternoon of the season. I got 2 roosters from a place before the dogs got into a nasty fight with a humongous raccoon. Since I could not carry my firearm onto the private land, separating the dogs from the critter was quite an ordeal since the dogs basically ignored the ecollar signals. With the dogs all bloodied, we just came home to treat their wounds. That was how our season ended.
