I don’t put any kind of tape on my drum kit. I like my drum open tones with cs black dots or clear pinstripes and the bass drum a felt on the kicker side. I prefer a big sound.
@@ccdrums1290 someone should write a book on drummers and thair drum kit.for instance John densmore what ever happened to his mod orange drum kit.and other kits from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s.🥁
Talk about a professional introduction to this next level of drumming! That was the perfect video tutorial for me, a hobby drummer, who just loves to play for the joy of playing.
Thanks. It’s a cool piece of gear but due to the price, not for everyone. Especially those like yourself who are just playing for the joy of playing. I’m with ya brother, my “serious” days of drumming and hungering for the right situation and big gigs are behind me now. Just recording and playing for enjoyment now. 😉
I love these old songs you dig up... i think i have not heard this on radio since about 1975 or 76... i lived in Texas and they were a Texas band so it played ... it reminded me of songs like Dirty Water by The Standells... You Drive Me Wild by The Primates... love these older quirky songs. Garage bands ruled back then. It makes me want to dig up some old Doctor Demento shows or Wolfman Jack i used to hear on the Armed Forces Radio. Funny his radio show came across the border from Mexico where i used to live on Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio Tx. It was so powerful had the best sound. Thanks for another great memory, i hope your doing well. Great job on this video.
I read or heard somewhere that Bonham's next kit was to be in the same sizes you use. It was going to be a black sparkle kit. I have silver sparkle classic maples with a 26" kick and I'm thinking of going back to 24". In 2007 my bass was $750. A new one today is around $1500!
Hey man! Thanks for watching the video. Yeah, prices for everything have gone up so much. It really sucks. I love 26” kick drums too. A presence that’s felt as well as heard. The 24” is cool. I used to play a 22x18 for a long time and it took me a while to get used to the faster response and sound of the 24x14”. Different animal. I’m used to it now though and it sounds good mic’ed up. I bet your kit is awesome. Silver sparkle is another favorite of mine! 😁
@@ccdrums1290 I have Remo head fit issues with the 26er. As if they are too tight. I took a chance on an Evans 56 and it seats well. So far its got more low end than the Remo Emperer but is less responsive.
@@NCPAengineer Hmmmm. I know Remo makes heads especially for out of round drums. I think it’s the vintage series? I’m not sure if they have them available in 26”, but at least you have something that works. Another reason maybe to switch to a different size drum???
When friends visit I insist they bang around on my kit so I can hear it from the only prospective that matters: the audience in front of the drums. NOT all that racket behind them.
@@ccdrums1290 Right! When you hear an infuriating snare buzz sitting behind your drums you can rest assured you're the only person in the room that hears it.
Dude!!! This is such a sleeper Zeppelin track. This is in my top 5 Zeppelin tunes. You do so well and give justice to what you are explaining and things I wouldn’t have known without your videos. Excellent work my friend.
Can you do a video on cymbals and what thin, medium, dark etc mean and mixing them or using the same all around(all thin or all medium or mix)Love the videos brother.🤘
Hey man! Thanks for checking out the videos. I’m not really knowledgeable on cymbals…there are so many companies, different types (dark, dry, power, etc.) and different techniques used in the manufacturing process to get the particular sounds….it’s kinda over my head. I chose what I play for a couple reasons: 1, they don’t break. 2, I love the Paiste “shimmer” from the 2002 line. Lastly, some of my favorite drummers played them and they just feel like “home” when I play them.
"Girl like you" def very catchy. I don't think I ever told you this, but you're the reason I picked up sticks. Parents took me to a front show at penn state slep center and I was mesmerized watching you guys especially your ability. Then I started listening to the artist formerly known as lars....haha...but moved on from him years ago. Anywho, you are the reason I even began
Wow, that is pretty awesome. Thank you for sharing that with me. I’m glad you became a “drummist” 😁 and that we got a chance to play a little together in my attic back in the day. Crazy how time flies!
Good as can be. That ping ride is a ziljdian so maybe that was your one and only....or you regifted? Haha. Miss ya man. Been way too long. Would you believe I still think of some "The Front" tunes at times?
@rickfisher1634 I played Zildjian for a long time but kept cracking them. I switched to Paiste after watching some of my favorite drummers (Bonham, Paice, Cozy Powell, etc.) bash them with no damage. Paiste 2002 ‘s have this beautiful shimmer and I’ve never cracked one. Some of the Front’s old tunes were catchy, we were fortunate to have 4 guys that all contributed to our sound. Little did I know that our “ heyday” was really the peak of the club scene. I miss those days.
Is that John?? CLINT!!!! How the heck are you!! Looked for ya a few times to no avail. Hope you are well! I see you left the Zildjian family.😢 I hope we can get in touch somehow!
Hey man! Yep it’s me. Living in Georgia for the past 10 years. Ludwig and Paiste. What I grew up listening to and what I love to play. Thanks for checking it out! Hope all is well.
I get it. I was always involved with playing or recording since I was 17, so it’s just something I always do. Recording has been a lot of fun. I have a small home studio where I can do tracks for people and myself. Fun to dial up the sounds.
Wow ... the master class is in session. You really pulled a deep cut this time. Not sure if others know what this song is about ... i had to wait untill today to check this out because i felt about the same as Robert and John Paul when they worked on this. Jimmy and John were hanging out more and more leaving Rob and J.P in the studio doing most of the work. They weren't happy. If John Bonham wouldn't have died the way he did i believe they would have broken up anyways as this whole album shows the rift growing between them. Sometimes i feel all alone same way, lately im kinda in a deep funk. My favorite truck won't start and the old days of family and friends around while you're working on something have long passed. Im just feeling my age i guess. Another great pick... i can't believe you pulled this out. Lots of work on this... it being one of their longest. Sounds great and as always you put on a great show. Thanks for remembering us old folks with a real deep classic.
Hey Frank! I hear ya buddy. I’m 66 and at times I experience the same feelings. I lost my job last year and things have been a struggle. God has blessed me though through it all and it is Him I rely on when times get tough. I feel like I know you through our conversations here on RU-vid and I pray for your well being. You are quite knowledgeable in music and bands, pretty impressive. Thank you for taking the time to listen to the song. Like you said, I’m not sure what others think of this song…or if they listened to it the whole way through since it is so long. I had fun playing it and I’m glad you chimed in and schooled me on the circumstances of the recording of that album. Always good to hear from you!😁
I thought I was tight enough but not even close to tight enough. My Tune bot says 211 HZ after tightening the crap out of my reso and I am afraid to pull out the heads from collar. It does sound better already though. I will try and keep going and see where I end up. I also have the drum dial tension tuner. Anybody have a good number on that? Their enclosed pamphlet of recommended tensions for each drum size and heads seem pretty tame and below where I am going. 85 psi max on any reso head they say, already up to almost 90 psi at 211 hz.
The bottom snare head is a different animal and the 85 psi recommendation doesn’t really apply here. I usually don’t use a tuner on my snare, drum dial either. I’ve done it for so long that I just know where it should be. As a general rule, in order to get the pop and snare sensitivity from the drum, the bottom head should be very tight. You have to be careful with it, but I tune mine up pretty tight (almost as tight as it will go without really forcing it) and let it sit overnight. It de-tunes somewhat and stretches out over that time period and then I tune it up so when I tap on the head, it’s about a G -G# pitch. I could go tighter if I really forced it, but that is dangerous, will damage the head and detrimental to the sound. It’s pretty tight, but not extreme by reasonable standards. Every professional I know tunes their snare bottom in this manner. The top is more for feel and sound quality. Mine is at a medium high tension. I encourage you to check out some of my recent cover videos and listen to the snare. The tuning on my black beauty is exactly how I described and I think it sounds great 😁. With that being said, drum sounds are subjective so what sounds good to you is what works 🤘🏻😉
Sir I do drum covers also and not only is your drumming right on the money but you have excellent taste in cymbals and your production is phantastic. I just subscribed to your channel.
Incredible job! Loved it! 2.10 3.18 Awesome! Don’t know how you kept the energy up all the way to the end! 👏 The slower part at 4.44 might have helped lol Cool song like you said with all the changes. 8.09😮Nailed it is right! WTG bro 😎 9.44 what?!!!! TALENTED!!!!
Haha, wow. You must have watched it the whole way through! I didn’t think you’d like that one since it’s kind of obscure and long. Thanks for all the cool superlatives!
Tried both of these tunings today… finally dialed in my stage custom birch 16/18 floors. Noticeably fat and full of character. I’m running cotton balls in each drum to act as a natural gate (thanks Matt Garstka). My biggest issue now is matching my 14” rack tom to the floors. Any tips for that? Thanks again for the help, subbed!
Very cool man. Glad you got them happening. Sounds like you have Bonham sizes and others who have that size usually tune the 14” tom to a fundamental pitch of about an A. That’s achievable with different tensions, you can try an E on top (165 hz.) an F# or G on the bottom ( 185 to 196 hz). That will get you in the ballpark. Then adjust accordingly. To high, drop the pitch a touch, vice versa. Thanks for your comment!
Man, that was crazy good all the way through. I actually had never heard this one before. I kinda fell off after Physical Graffiti, but man, this was really cool.
I love everything about this video, great job. I've always been fascinated by this song and it's one of the BIG ones that got me wanting to be a drummer. You nailed the song and the sound. What is the secret of that snare sound?
Thanks man, I love the song as well. I have a video on my channel that describes the tuning of the snare and examples from songs. Once it’s tuned properly, it’s mostly the processing. Once eq’ed I have compression and reverb on it, that’s about it.
Thx for this video but especially for the bonus info. I have SD3 and hooked it up through a XR18 mixer, you can dial it in so you feel the bell of the ride it’s incredible. But when I play live I use an acoustic kit and I noticed the signal to the pa was lower now I know why! Thx for taking the time to do that video brother and for the front head tip.
Thanks brother! The kit is a Ludwig classic maple. 13x9, 16x16, 18x16, 24x14 kick. The snare is a 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty. Emperor X on the top cranked up a little tighter than medium high, bottom head hazy ambassador cranked up very tight. Thanks for asking!
You can tell .. alot of effort went into this video...GREAT JOB!! Ive always wondered if you do multiple takes to get all the camera angles ... or is it straight through and you have to cut in different angles to match the music. Either way your always spot on with your performance. Love that sound... those drums are tuned perfectly.
Thank you. I do just one take straight through. I have 2 cameras set up, one above me and one in front. I just switch between the two. Thanks for the compliment on the sound as that’s what I try to focus on most and have the most fun doing. My son is the video editor and puts it all together, I just play and try to dial up a good sounding kit. Thanks as always for watching and commenting, I always look forward to your comments and thoughts 😁.
