Hi I'm the Turtleholic. I made this channel to help teach people everything they need to know about owning a pet turtle. You can learn more on my blog turtleholic.com
Nice video. Thank you for sharing. I just bought a baby red slider ear terrapin. What kind of vegetables or fruit I can feed for this little baby? Thank you. From: Singapore.
Hi I have 3 little * baby turtles (2 female 1 male different species) and I was wondering if I should separate them instead of having them in the same “pond”. Thank you!!
Hey new to the channel great content. My res is 11 inches and extremely fast an aggressive. I've bought Tetris, cichlids, goldfish, minnows, guppies, you name it she has hunted them all down one by one no matter the size. She just ate an African albino cichlid which was my favorite fish and I don't think I'm going to buy anything else other than goldfish because I've already spent hundreds on fish and they were eaten. I think she does have trouble getting smaller fish. Anything a decent size she will eat, like that big goldfish you have there.
@@jiaweilim2482 good question! Most people recommend against it because it’s unnatural for them, and may be dangerous if you cut too close to their hand
Great video👍 For the past few days my turtle for some reason has been lethargic and not excited to eat like he usually is. I tried the carrot bath today and he HATED it was totally flipping out even tho its good for him... should I continue doing it??
I was quoted 150 for a scheduled visit (not including any treatment and the cheapest treatment woukd be 300 minimum..) i literally hate living this has to be a crime aae you serious
DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT TURTLES!!.??? 😡 you don't and you picking her up the way you do is disgusting and it hurts them. As well saying your turtle will be drowned in a tub of water is beyond anything I've heard!! Where and who are you learning this nonsense from? Why are you keeping turtles in an aquarium??? Turtle conditioner is BS toss it before your turtles dies of some kind of disease! Take your turtle out of the damn aquarium every day and let them wonder and explore!!! Put a small baby blanket onto a bath mat under a piece of furniture in a quiet accessible room and set a heating pad on low under the bath mat if you fold the blanket up to be able to cover her completely, she will climb under the blanket and sleep for days in the warmth and solitude. They hate being in the water all the time and they love to explore!! If you put her in the bathtub for a swim every other day she will go potty, eat and drink, and then want out about 5 hours later. Just make sure the tub is clean and rinsed out of any soap or cleaning products. Leave the bathroom light on wait for an hour before feeding and then drop in some food and wait for a bit. Continue doing this until she stops eating. My girl loves celery leaf tops with the entire thing plopped in the water. She plays with it, rips the leaves off, and enjoys it. I also toss in a cuttlebone for her to work on her beak. You can also toss in some toys for her to play with. No water conditioner is required!!! Just add slightly cool water to the tub and the depth is up to you. Sometimes I fill up to the overflow to give her an extra big swim and other times just an inch over her. You can was her shell with Johnson tearless baby shampoo and a medium to soft nail brush only on the shell and then rinse well and apply on her shell directly to wash her legs and creases. Since in lightly warm-cool water and wrap in a hand towel of her own!! And place her in front of her heated bed or unwrap her and put her in the preheated bed. She will sleep all night. Remember they can't see in the dark! She will need a night light for your help to get to her bed if it gets dark. They are super intelligent, my girl knows at least 50 words and loves to be cuddled. She loves to sit up on the arm of the couch to watch outside. They are nosey, gentle, bulldog mentality, never taking no for an answer. They can climb like a lizard and are smart enough to use tools to get what they want. My girl loves to climb up the main floor-to-ceiling screens so she can see our neighbor's pool. She is also guilty of pushing our screen door open in the bedroom and jumping off the balcony on the second floor so she could dig huge holes in the lawn. Not surprising to us because we've had her for 34 years! She is almost 35 and a sweet, loving, gentle, and super smart girl. She came to us about the size of a quarter and we were told she was just a few weeks old. We didn't have ANY INFORMATION on how to raise her because we didn't have the internet and the encyclopedias had nothing on how to raise them. We kept her very clean in a green plastic 4-inch high dish with a plastic palm tree. My husband said my daughter wanted her and said she probably won't live 6 weeks. 😢 🤣🤣🤣 I guess he forgot I would be taking care of her. I bathed her daily with baby shampoo and when she got older we kept up with bigger aquariums. When we got to a 5-gallon she kept throwing herself out of the aquarium so I decided she didn't like living in an aquarium and she kept getting into our blanket closet and climbing into the soft blankets. She was telling me she liked soft warm dark places to sleep. She came out every few days to tell us she needed her water. We followed her lead when and what she needed and for 34 years she's big, bold, happy, and healthy. We have a sun tanning area 😎 😂 for her plus if the sun is coming in she finds it and shares it with the dog and cats. She leaves and breathes the tanning life! 😉😅 We take her into our backyard with a belt on her that has a plastic ball contraption that keeps her seen and safe. She loves to sit on the couch with a blanket and watch TV with us, if little kids come over she's the first one to greet them and stay playing dress up for hours. She loves when you lay down on the carpet and she can slide up and down off of your body. I have my girlfriends who have known her all her life and they all have very big careers and dress in clothes that cost more than my mortgage payment but they LOVE LOVE LOVE to come over and lay on the living room carpet to just escape into Tiny's world for an hour. I leave them with her and a glass of wine and they always tell me she is a stress Whisperer. They feel so much better 😌 and she makes everything right in the world especially when she climbs up to their face and rubs her cheeks against their cheeks they feel how gentle she is around their face and they can feel her breathing on their face. They always talk about that and how she shows herself and her friendship that way. Yes, it all sounds too good but it is true and not only tiny but all turtles are the same if given a chance. She has never even attempted to bite and nobody even imagines her capable of biting especially because she will play with toddlers for an hour and be as gentle as a pillow. But I always tell people not to use their fingers to point at her face. 😅 I would bite if you put your finger in my face and I also talk to Tiny about what is not nice. She understands so much you would probably be surprised. She comes when I call her if she's awake. She says goodnight to company when we tell her to. She goes to bed when I tell her to even in the daytime. She knows so many words and commands but most of all she's a gentle loving turtle. She does not go potty in the house either, I should mention. They can't eat out of water so we assume they only go potty in water. They sometimes love a back scratch near the bottom edge of the shell above their tail. Timy has a spot where she can scratch her own back in an emergency back scraping incident happens and no human caretaker is available. I'm sure she would build one if it was up to her, she's a bulldog. LOL Anyway, I hope you read all of this huge comment and maybe learn something. 💚💚💚
Was that spinach from the spring mix? 😬 spinach isn't good for turtles, same for celery and a few others. I really enjoyed watching your video! I loved watching Penny be so active about her food. I have an albino RES, and she has had some issues with eating before, but now that she's comfortable, she has suddenly regained her appetite, and I was looking for ways to encourage her to eat more veggies. Thank you!!
I’m sorry but I don’t have experience giving my turtle antibiotics so don’t feel comfortable recommending a specific one. Your best bet would be searching google or a turtle forum
It’s common for turtles to not bask for the first couple days as they get adjusted to their new tank. If yours still isn’t basking, you can watch this video I did on how to get your turtle to bask: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-emVNLpCdfP4.html
Mine will not eat and when offered any food she starts scratching her mouth like she was itchy and she just tries to smell it and repeats the same action
@@turtleholic she’s doing better I realized this behavior could be due to the turtle not liking the food she was offered, because days before I had given her some turkey ham… and now she’s rejecting carrots because of that also… I guess it was the cold weather and it could also be that she had fallen and damaged her mouth, anyways this might be useful for other keepers thanks for the info and spreading the knowledge
That’s a great question. For my light, I put it at around 75% brightness and 6-8 inches away from the basking platform. The key is to make it so the basking platform is between 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit. I use a thermometer to make sure.
I got the exact same turtle since I was 5 and she got really big. There's so much so that we have to change the tank 2 tomes and we're even thinking about changing the tank again. To be honest I'm only just now barely doing research aboutt taking care of her and I realized I've been neglecting her really badly. I feel so bad now. I don't fully neglect her. I change the water and during the summer. We let her out into a little kid's pool. But she outgrew it and now she get, so we don't do that anymore. Do you have any other advice? I should consider?
I’m so glad i found this video. My mom has two RES, both of them are rescued from bad situations. One of them, roma, is probably about 20years old, but we arent sure about the other one, Largo. I found this video because i was looking into RES behaviors, as largo has attacked roma multiple times over the past month. We’re probably going to re-home largo, but we’re really upset about it.
I’m sorry to hear that! Unfortunately it is common for RES to be territorial/aggressive to one another. That was really nice of your mother to take them in.

Hi, I actually was very close to buying her a skateboard from amazon, but then the skateboard became out of stock so I don't know where to get one now.
I watched it at 6:30 pm MST. I'm anew turtle owner. I "rescued" two turtles that came with 55 gallon tank. I know nothing about turtles so your videos are my source of lessons. I know that the tank they came in is not nearly big enough for two RES but it must do for now. My question is, one turtle (7") likes to nip the smaller one (6"). It's not constant or violent but it concerns me, especially since they have been tank mates for awhile. Do you have any advice on why this is happening?
Hi, it is most likely one of the following: 1) If the 7" RES is a male, and the 6" RES is a female, there is a good chance the male is trying to mate with the female. It's very common for males to nip at females they want to mate with. This can continue for a while, but sometimes the female is able to reject the male enough times that they stop trying. 2) It could be a territorial thing. The larger turtle wants to be the alpha of the tank, and wants first dibs on the basking platform, food, etc. If you notice that the biting becomes aggressive, you should try separating the turtles for a while if possible.
@@turtleholic thank you for your response. I find your videos most informative, and I'm certainly going to engage with more questions as I have a lot to learn. I have found your website and will begin reviewing all the content. Thank you for explaining things simply.
Please help me. My turtle kept opening and closing his mouth on the surface of the water to make bubbles and I found it very cute but these few days he keeps doing the same (opening and closing his mouth fast and too much/ exactly like when he sees a food and wants to eat one but he does this more than once) when his head is completely out of water. I was wondering if he has any sort of problems and what I should do. Any tips can be helpful. I'm stressed out please help me. Ps: his neck is mostly not stretched when he is doing this but is sometimes stretched and he is very active and eats well. His tank is clean and the water temperature is about 75 degrees of Fahrenheit. I am soooo stressed please help me. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. Does he do this only when you are near the tank? He might just be exited to see you. If you are afraid he is sick, try increasing the water temperature to 80 degrees fahrenheight because that can help strengthen their immune system.
@@turtleholic thank you so much for responding 😢❤️ No he does this and it doesn't matter if I am near the tank. It seems like he wants to catch invisible food from the surface the water and sometimes from the air (not that often), but his other behaviors seem normal and the same.
@@turtleholic omg I feel soooo relieved thank you so so much for taking the time and responding to me. Me and my turtle are both so thankful to you. I will try to increase his water temperature. I wish you the best. Have a nice day. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
