Tank rebuild of a prior habitat housing Black Chinned Red Salamanders. The tank was a total do over unfortunately due to a nasty ongoing case of Cyanobacteria and leaks into the terrestrial portion. The new build focuses on moving water and mimics a stream bank. Materials used were mainly slate, spider wood, other random drift woods, gravel, sand, ferns, various mosses and snakeskin liverworts. Animals and aquatic microfauna will be re-introduced at some point in the near future. Hope you enjoy!

Excellent structure. Very artistic and a wonderful habitat for salamanders. A rich substrate would reduce the potential for cyano and provide adequate nutrients for plants as well as a source of natural deterioration for waste.

Thank you! In the previous tank, I used Seachem Flourite and Fluval stratum. Had lots of good plant growth and religiously did water changes, but the cyano kept coming back. Water parameters were good. I’ll be adding some plants that can root down and additionally will help with filtration

@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 wow father fish commented that's great for you! I was wondering if he meant a dirt base with a sand cap for things to mellow out? Best thing I ever did for my small volume aquarium was hornwort and fully aquatic plants. Not that hornwort is typical for this biotype but neither is sphagnum moss. My water issues with algae cleared very quickly.

Thanks! I noticed that. I may remove it if I find another more similarly colored piece of wood. Appreciate you watching!

Your setup is extremely impressive! do you have all of the surface area around the powerhead covered? I am not sure how fast your salamanders can swim since there is a possibility that slow moving salamanders could get sucked into the powerhead. If your salamanders move slowly I would suggest covering the surface area around the intake of the powerhead with a small & round piece of cork-bark or as an alternative tying a sponge around it.

Thank you! It’s mostly covered and actually not that powerful. The salamanders are all fairly large at this point, so fortunately not really a concern. When they are really small, I will typically cover filter intakes or any other strainer / power head with window screen mesh for safety

Great video! I always love getting more caudate content! I'm curious how you determine the land:water ratio for your builds? I would have thought that for a black chinned you'd want more land area than this. Do you keep them more aquatic than typical? Do they live in this enclosure all year? Sorry for the care questions!

All good. Over the past several years I’ve seen that they spend a very significant amount of time within the water feature. One of the 3 may be netonic as that one still is in larval form for the past several years. I may add some more rock outcrops and build up more terrestrial area in the future. It’s really just based off of what I observe in how they use the enclosure.

Hello! Great video! I built a large 75 gal paludarium for my two tiger salamanders about two months ago. Unfortunately, one recently past away from wedging itself underneath a rock and drowned. Because of that I decided to turn it into a terrarium. Now that there’s only one tiger salamander in such a big tank it feels a bit empty. What are some different species I can put in the tank with him? I was thinking another tiger salamander and a spotted salamander. I do have an extra tank in the garage I can use if one of the salamanders are aggressive or aren’t eating. Thanks!

Thanks and sorry to hear about the salamander. I would only put same species in - so same sub-species of Tiger salamander. Just a preference of mine

Erythromicin kills cyanobacteria very effectively. Any fish antibiotic works good in general.

I LOVE your content! Great vid, as always. If I may: I am not a big fan of the central wood stick. The colour of the wood is much different from the other sticks and I am a bit afraid it might break the water flow a bit too much? Anyway, the new tank looks gorgeous (as was the previous one)!

I’ve used blue green stain remover, which at first worked (no effect on any animals), but then it just seemed to not do anything. Smaller habitats like this vs larger ones I work with seem to be more prone to these outbreaks
