I'm just going to ask cuz if you don't ask you won't know would you ever consider covering the Barnabas trilogy which you seem like you fall more or less into the let's say progressive camp at least you know tangentially that's my that's my observation and there are some legitimate you know underlying socialist principles in those books that you probably enjoy another thought have you ever considered covering I believe it is the six books series The Immortal Nicholas Flamel I was really into those books when I was younger

NGL the biggest disappointment I had with the series was the final mainline book, where I felt the paradox plot was completely fumbled. I think the author should've had the clone wake up during the chaos and sent it back to replace the time-displaced one, making there be no paradox in the end. Maybe still have the sacrifice, but the clone isn't involved and make the new body creation reveal that someone had been secretly attempting to hybridize themselves in an apparent hope of acquiring inherent magical ability and the way the replacement source was gathered made it practically impossible to not make it a half-elf, implying yet another supervillainous plot layer for a giggle. Le sigh maybe someday I'll fanfic...

Making "the big strong guy" black is such a racist choice for an adaptation. Like why make the big strong dude a stereotype when him being Eurasian originally fights TWO stereotyypes. Asians being frail and Blacks being aggressive. Yeah this adaptation looks heartless

I love Artemis Fowl, and as with everything I love, I know it has flaws. That said, I didn't think the episodic nature was one of them, because while there was no overarching plot, the characters were not stagnant, especially not Artemis himself. I will contend that Artemis Fowl II has one of the most dynamic (not the best) character arcs in fiction.
@exitsexamined

Fair enough, just one opinion anyway and great to meet other people who are into the series! I didn't mean to imply that Artemis or the characters were stagnant more so that the books were episodic. Totally agree though Artemis from first to last book is totally different

Honeslty if the series wanted to do romance/mature and show Artemisis growing interest in girls and the creator felt that he x holly was weird and felt it was gross. Then why not just give Artemis a love interest that's a girl he saves or pulls free from the same dark path he was on at the start? Example how about Opal? That may sound weird but hear me out. Opal and Artemis are in a way foils to eachother and reflections of what they could of been had they had the right or wrong people in their lives. Have him mature and realize Opal is a reflection of who he could of been without his support base of people that care for him and push him to be better and grow. Each time they defeated her, she got worse and worse and more twisted and cruel. Have him realize he wrote her off without seeing the bigger picture of how she was always never given the attention or credit she felt she rightuflly deserved just beacuse she was a girl. How her own parents didn't support her, despite her genius and even her own father tried to force her only to go to coleldge to get married rather than study. And how all that ate at her until she became a narrisist to compensate and treid to overthrow the fairy world to make one where she could in her own mind, thrive. And how he can understand that and even relate to it and how for a time he thought that way too. That he'd force the world to recongize his genius if neccearyy. Take ALL that. And make him decide to reach out to her and offer her a kind hand and compassoion and undeerstanding and have her realize it's honest and take it eventually if it's books down the road. To avoid it feeling gross, it could be enteirly non physical and more a showing of Aremis maturity that he's helping someone get better and not feel alone. With the implicatoin once she's recovered mentally she might be honeslty interested in him. Once he's a bit older. That way you fix all the issues and don't make it too fetishy cause it has a meaningful thing to say about how some truly gifted people are treated unfarily by the world if they don't fit into the places theya re meant to.

I absolutely loved this series, though I agree it fell kind of off after a while. Eternity Code would have been a decent conclusion, then the Opal Deception was a nice way to solve the dissatisfying parts of that ending while also managing to somewhat age with its audience. Book five is where it started to go bad, mostly because it kind of just casually reverted some of the big changes of the end of the previous book. It also started the trend to go extremely wild with the magic system, each part adding more outlandish magic as opposed to the relatively strict rules used in the first half.

@exitsexamined
@exitsexamined 3 дня назад
I go back and forth on this. I mean there are good adaptions out there in the world. If the right people can get behind it, it can be an amazing thing. Did you see George RR's recent quote about this? Basically saying how they always try to change it from the source material
@mohamedmaiza3866
@mohamedmaiza3866 3 дня назад
@exitsexamined yeah I mean you will always have to adapt the source material for the new medium. But modern Hollywood is, and this is how I interpret Martin's comments, operating with this mentality that they will do it better. So adaptations like Fran Walsh and lotr are seeming more and more rare. Where as adaptations like rings of power more and more the norm. It's particularly disheartening when we take into account Game of thrones and how great the series was when the dialogue and material was coming from Martin as opposed to whatever nonsense hollywood vame up with in later seasons.
@mallk238
@mallk238 6 дней назад
I reread the entire series a year or so ago now and while i certainly loved the story and thought it was a nice trip down memory lane…i realized that a LOT of the characters were made up of like…incredibly racist stereotypes. Not to mention the story was wayyyy too comfortable depicting the police as these heroes who are morally superior while also being brutalistic and often blatantly against civil rights. I wouldn’t have minded if they at least called attention to it or acknowledged that this stuff was wrong but it doesn’t seem to notice or acts like there’s nothing wrong. The goblins are what get me the most bc they’re like every jewish stereotype shoved into one species as hard as possible. That and the dwarfs and their obsession with money and the way mulch is constantly described in more and more disgusting ways. Don’t get me wrong, i still enjoy the stories for the most part…but i would LOVE to hear eoin culfer’s thoughts about this, as it’s something i feel is worth discussing. Artemis fowl would make for an interesting example of how these topics get presented in children’s books.

Lloyd Alexander and the Prydain Chronicles are genuine treasures and while I strongly desire for them to be more recognized as such, they should not be sullied by modern media adaptations, which would inevitably butcher the reputations of both. Spread the word that they're amazing.

Hello Exits Examined! I have just subscribed, and I adore your Tintin and Chronicles Of Prydain videos. I love the Tintin stories, but at the same time I hate the earlier ones for the more offensive portayals [a part of history, sure, but still very offensive], but the later ones really did become better, to the point where I could separate Tintin from his past. Unfortunately, Tintin is not the only Belgian character who failed to make it big in the U.S, there's also Johan and Peewit by Peyo [creator of The Smurfs]. If I could describe Johan and Peewit's stories, it would be Tintin with elements of Chronicles Of Prydain, which makes the fact that Johan and Peewit are obscure even sadder. I'd love to see a video examining why Johan and Peewit couldn't catch on in the US, while also mentioning the growing fandom these characters are beginning to receive. A video on the rise and fall of Will Vinton and his Claymation studio would also be amazing!

I've working on a series of books about an anthropomorphic fox who is a prince in hiding, and the Prydain series and the King Arthur myths have been inspirations. Obviously, I'm making my stories more unique, but I am trying to learn from the strengths and flaws from other medieval time-based stories. I do know I do not want it to end like either the Prydain stories or the King Arthur myths. Speaking of Arthur, I would love to see you cover how King Arthur's myths have been adapted over the years, some a lot looser than others.
@muppetsretrofan8873

The books are really FANTASTIC, but I also love The Black Cauldron movie, and I get really annoyed when people bash on it because it's not 100 precent like the books. It's actually beginning to sour my opinion on the original Prydain books because of that. There's actually a few things in the movie I like better then the books, for example, although Eilonwy still stands up against Taran when he says something wrong, she doesn't constantly insult him like in the books [I know Taran does deserve it sometimes, but other times Eilonwy feels outright mean], and Gurgi's sacrifice actually felt earned unlike Elidyr. Elidyr was a huge jerk to Taran and kept getting him into trouble, even with the allies, so I didn't feel any sympathy for Elidyr at the end of the book. Gurgi in the movie on the other hand, you could see he was lonely and he did feel regret, making his sacrifice and revival feel earned. I also don't care for the ending with almost everyone just leaving [I have this issue with Tolkien too], especially Dallben. He's Taran's adoptive dad and knows full well Taran doesn't know how to be a king yet, he should at least give him some advice before leaving. I do wonder how different and much better a Cosgrove Hall TV Series of Prydain would've been, given their excellent Wind In The Willows TV Show?
