Tintin was how I really got into reading. I always struggled with it as a child, but finding those albums really sparked something. My dad will talk about how I'd always want to "go find Tintin" whenever we went into a new library as a small child. It got me into both reading and drawing. Wanted to be a comic book artist because of Tintin when I was growing up. I owe Tintin a lot from my childhood.

This is exactly why I love sharing stories like Tintin. It's so interesting how it resonated with people and has a special meaning for them. Thanks for sharing, I hope you try making some comics at some point!

I love Tintin, My brother and I used to read them on the plane, when going on vacations, and whenever we had free time :) I also played Tintin in Tibet, which I remember as an actually good game. Still bumped out about not getting a sequal to the fllm. Great video, keep 'em coming :)

That's crazy, I used to share my copies with my brother too haha. Never got a chance to play the games as a kid but playing Tintin in Tibet for this video was awesome. According to Peter Jackson we'll still be getting the film so we'll see. Thanks for the comment and I plan to 'em coming!

tintin is huge in my country (indonesia) ! it was back in 80-90s when there's a period where almost everyone here knows tintin. i think mostly started because our country featured in the comic (you can see in 4:40 Herge himself had the copy of indonesian edition). Today they still quite popular, merchandise and comic still sell well in my country, the fandom and community also still exist and thriving, and i think they also had exhibition here not so long ago.

Hey thanks so much for the comment, had no idea it was so huge in Indonesia! Interesting to think how global Tintin really is, even before the Internet really. I would love to get my hands on an Indonesia edition someday, cheers! btw I can't wait to visit Indonesia and I plan to sometime this year hopefully! (not bali haha)

@@exitsexamined no probs! Yes to say how big Tintin influences globally is quite an understatement i might say, but likewise, it's also so interesting to see things that big globally but are not huge in the USA. Really giving perspectives to a lot of things you know? Speaking of Tintin, Belgium national football(soccer) team just launched their Tintin inspired kit, i might consider to cop one haha 😆

I discovered your channel through your Dinotopia video, and man do I love this one too. I was a childhood Tintin fan in the early 90s, and even then I could tell the difference between the early and later books. I was always frustrated back then that some of those earlier books eluded me- specifically, Tintin in the Congo- though now I feel differently about that. The thing I always loved most was the art style, and that's what's really stuck with me all these years, leading me to discovering other artists such as Mœbius. Thank you for another terrific video!

Really? Hello Exits Examined! I have just subscribed, and I adore your Tintin and Chronicles Of Prydain videos. I love the Tintin stories, but at the same time I hate the earlier ones for the more offensive portayals [a part of history, sure, but still very offensive], but the later ones really did become better, to the point where I could separate Tintin from his past. Unfortunately, Tintin is not the only Belgian character who failed to make it big in the U.S, there's also Johan and Peewit by Peyo [creator of The Smurfs]. If I could describe Johan and Peewit's stories, it would be Tintin with elements of Chronicles Of Prydain, which makes the fact that Johan and Peewit are obscure even sadder. I'd love to see a video examining why Johan and Peewit couldn't catch on in the US, while also mentioning the growing fandom these characters are beginning to receive. A video on the rise and fall of Will Vinton and his Claymation studio would also be amazing!

Great video! When I was a kid I always read tintin when we visited some friends of the family, but it was a bit weird since they only owned the French versions and the father of their family had translated them himself and placed stickers with his translations over the original text. It would be interesting if you could do a video like this for Spirou and Fantasio, which (sadly) isn’t quite as popular as tintin, but it’s definitely inspired by him since it features many of the same ideas (the eternal boy-hero, the journalist, the adventures into exotic places, the political and social commentary, etc).

Thank you so much for the kind words and comments! I can imagine your friends were probably not extremely excited by sticker translations all over their books haha. Tintin entering the public domain will be a sad day, indeed. I sincerely hope they don't write any new stories. And I also hope that they won't make another Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson travesty, where they pick and choose bits from various Tintin adventures that have nothing to do with each other. And I REALLY hope the Americans don't mess Tintin up. They've never cared for him thus far, so it would be like a slap in the face if they started re-doing Tintin for American audiences now. They've already ruined Asterix with a horrendously bad translation...

Oh nice! Was it / is it big in Scotland? I think at the time of Black Island's release (during WWII) there was some controversy on Herges puhblishers side about showing the UK in a positive light. Still it's one of my favorites though!

@@exitsexamined Ha, I read somewhere he had to redraw the whole bloody thing because his visual portrayal wasn't very accurate. Can't say how big it is as a whole here, but I'm a student and I'd say Tintin is pretty popular with certain circles in my generation. It also helps that small countries always appreciate a shoutout, and we're no different. To add, the Tintin film came out when I was like 7, and Captain Haddock having a pretty decent Scottish accent was so cool lol.

I love Tintin, but lately I feel the books at least here in the U.S. have fallen victim to cancel culture since as you mention they can be pretty political and prejudiced. The one book I don’t fully understand for getting canceled is Tintin in America because while yes the drawings and depictions of the Native Americans are not always flattering in the story you see Herge advocating for them by showing how terribly they are treated when Tintin accidentally finds oil on the reserve suddenly all these businesses men appear offering him millions when Tintin refuses and tells them to deal with the Native Americans the men give them five bucks and kick them out. In middle school when I first read the book I was struck by the candid depiction of the American West.
@exitsexamined
@exitsexamined 4 месяца назад
That's a great question and one I found myself asking all the time during this video - why did Tintin never get as famous in America compared to Europ ? I agree the cancel culture could have something to do with it in modern times but pretty much since they've been made it's never caught up. Without doing research I'd guess it's because pre-WWII they were still gaining traction in Europe itself so might not have reached modern audiences and during WWII the whole Herge working under a Nazi government and I'm doubting there was any Tintin available in the US at the time. Post WWII and beyond is probably when it started gaining traction in the US, but he's so different from traditional American superheros so probably took awhile to catch on and find it's audience. Just an uneducated guess and I'd love to hear more opinions!
@Hemostat
@Hemostat 3 месяца назад
That's also the book where all the Americans have guns and are constantly trying to lynch people lmao... I'd say the white Americans are the ones who look the worst. I'd also like to point out that the Blue Lotus didn't have the best representation but after a letter from a fan saying how disappointed they were, he tried to do better in the future. It's at least something. Wouldn't say he always got it right
