Thanks. What can I do as an adult with dystonic CP? My left arm does something similar
@MindFullMoves
@MindFullMoves 3 месяца назад
Oooooo! There's so many things you can do! Get curious about your own habitual patterns and have some fun adding in variation! So, become more aware of how you hold your finger, thumb, wrist, elbow, shoulder as you reach out for something. It might be hard to pay attention to allllll your body parts, so just pick 2 at a time (ex fingers and elbow) and then add more, or mix it up, as your brain becomes more aware. Don't judge yourself about how your brain is coordinating everything, just notice and then start to add in some fun variation, that feels easy. What happens when you reach out... ...with your shoulder up by your ear? ... when you hold your breath? ... when one eye is closed? ... when your elbow is close to your ribs? When it's far away? What feels easier? What feels harder? This gives your brain information about how all your body parts are connected and how there might be more efficient ways to coordinate all of those body parts. Also.... here's some more detailed videos for the hand and arm, that you can follow along with: ❤️2 Exercises to Reduce Hand Spasticity: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KuJKnpb1I9o.html ❤️ A Gentle Exercise to Reduce Spasticity in the Arm: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KxKiDXZJ9c0.html

Hi Jen! Thank you for the great video! I'm not sure where the Q&A happened, I'm not on many socials but I wanted to check: What is your experience with dystonia? What do you find improves it? my son has been doing ABM intensively for a few years and his pelvis, spine head connection has improved loads, however, he still struggles with his right had (most affected arm) it seems to get hi-jacked by dystonia when he attempts to move it. Other dystonic movements have improved with differentiation but I'm not sure how to help him with this. Thanks! Aideen
@MindFullMoves
@MindFullMoves 3 месяца назад
Hi Aideen! A big welcome to my little corner of the internet! lol. Great Question! Unfortunately, Dystonia is really challenging. But there's a few things you can try. The overall best thing is to find those moments and movements that are calming to his nervous system. So giving his brain more 'time' in a calm state. Which you've probably seen him in during ABM lessons and hopefully he's experienced periods of 'calm' after his lessons too? So, you can support him at home just by using those same techniques of moving him slow, gentle, bring awareness to himself, etc. Then try to figure out exactly when his arm gets "triggered" and play around (get curious!) about another way to 'reach out' that reduces the trigger. So maybe if he looks away from the object he's reaching for, it might disrupt whatever pattern his arm goes into. But it could be an infinite number of variations to try! It might help if his head is in a different position, or his left hip, or his shoulder (try to reach the object from below, instead of reaching from above, or to one side). Play with the position of his wrist, fingers, how he leans, where his feet are, there's so many different combos to play with! Does it happen when the object is to the left/right, up/down, close/far from him? Basically, try to find the trigger point that leads his brain into that pattern and 'do something different', so you're disrupting the pattern, before it starts. Allowing his brain to explore another option. I hope this helps! Of course each person and brain is unique, so it's hard to give specific movements, but hopefully this gives you some ideas of where to start!

You can try a lot of exercises to strengthen “weak” muscles, or you can tap into your child’s brain to better ORGANIZE their own skeleton. 👉Anterior pelvic tilt The Pelvis is rolled forward, so the Head has to go way backward to counterbalance 👉Posterior Pelvis Tilt The Pelvis is rolled backward, so the Head has to come way forward to counterbalance 👉Tippy Toes All the weight shifts onto the ball of the foot, so the Pelvis and Head have to counterbalance 🧠BUT…. If the brain knows how to organize the head on top of the spine, on top of the pelvis, on top of the feet in the way our bones are designed... we use the least amount of muscle effort to hold ourselves upright. Standing upright becomes effortless. 🎉Walking becomes stable, balanced and easy! 👉Accessing the power of your child’s own brain to self-organize this ‘stacking of the bones’ can be done with gentle, respectful, experiential exercises with an Anat Baniel Method Practitioner. ✅Subscribe for gentle exercises you can do at home with your child with Developmental Delays or Disabilities.

I’m an Anat Baniel Method practitioner and highly recommend finding the closest practitioner in your area. If there isn’t one close by, I have online guided videos to get you started. There isn’t ONE exercise that will ‘fix’ your child, but a collection of gentle movements/experiences that will help their brain better organize their whole body. You can start with any of the free longer guided videos on my RU-vid channel. I also highly recommend Anat Baniel’s book: Kids Beyond Limits (it’s on Amazon) for a very thorough explanation of the theory and why this method works to access the potential of your child’s brain to learn new milestones.

If he’s not able to roll over, sit up on his own, or come into standing on his own…. His brain simply doesn’t have enough information to piece together how to organize his whole body to walk. Walking is a very complex movement! All the milestones before walking, are designed to give the brain the right info to build into walking. Basically, don’t skip milestones. Their brains need that information of how their body moves in those foundational stages.

Body mapping can help calm the nervous system which helps reduce spasticity (and help the brain to learn new skills!) Try it, go slow, and connect your child to their OWN body.

Hi Jen it seems like utube was hiding your videos from me, unfortunately my son has gone downhill with his seizures, he has had only a few but now hes body doesn’t want to snap or come back for him to being himself 😞he is always tired I bet he has muscle pain too it’s just so hard when his body is not responding I gotta start from beginning I will work on rolling thank you again ❤

@MindFullMoves 4 месяца назад
I’m so sorry for the seizures. ❤️ It’s so hard on them and can make them so tired. When he’s recovering from a seizure it’s usually best to not overwhelm them with more sensory input, so go really slow with all of his care taking activities and think about connecting him back to his body in safe, calm, enjoyable ways. Back to basics. ❤️ Giving you a big virtual hug.

What Internal Experience does your child have with Rolling Over? 😞Do they cry when you Roll them Over? 😞Do they startled and fling their arms out to stabilize themselves? 😞Do they resist being rolled to one side more than the other? If your child does any of these... their Nervous System doesn't feel safe! 🧠Forcing them to Roll Over while their Nervous system is in flight/fight or fawn response, takes them OUT of a learning state. 🧠Their brain is unable to learn new milestone skills when their Nervous System doesn't feel safe. So.. .what to do instead... ✅Go slow ✅Meet your child where they are (developmentally appropriate movements that build the foundation for the larger milestones) ✅Connect to their Nervous System through Brain-Based Movements 🎉Help your child with developmental delays or disabilities learn to Roll Over with the Basic Brain-Based Movements inside "Basics of Rolling Over" program: classes.mindfullmoves.com/offers/KDvFCesR
