As soon as I saw the crack in the epoxy, I was reminded of the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery known as Kintsugi - using a special lacquer that's been dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum to glue the pieces back together. And I think this idea perfectly fits your idea of rebranding epoxy tables as a form of rescuing the wood or reusing it, because the purpose behind Kintsugi isn't to fix a teapot or a bowl, but to take something that was an every day object and give it new life as a piece of art that's unique because of its flaws.

At 26:40 whilst you're curing the UV coat, the epoxy fluoresces a bright blue at the edges of the wood. Wonder if you could recreate that effect in normal light and make a "atoll table" where the dark epoxy transitions to a bright blue at the edge of the wood. Would be awesome, but probably very VERY difficult.
@Steamrick
@Steamrick 10 месяцев назад
I think the only way to do that is to make multiple extremely thin layers and let them cure long enough to apply the next one - and then you have to start progressively mixing in black epoxy so that it's a gradual darkening rather than immediate. The amount of effort would be immense - though possibly less so than the jeans table was.

I didn’t even notice that at first but that is definitely a cool effect. Maybe it’s possible to brush on a thin layer of blue and then pour in the black? Once you sand it smooth, you would see the thin blue outline. Depending on how “wet” the epoxy is, it may blend slightly into the black or it may just look like a border. Would be cool to experiment with though. 👍

As you stated at the end of this video Rescue... 🙃I have just been introduced to your channel earlier today... as a an artist who also trained as a cabinetmaker. I appreciate all the effort you went into resurrecting that amazingly beautiful piece of timber. 20 years ago I found myself in a timber merchants with all these fabulously striking unique pieces of all different kinds of timber. I ended up bringing a 18 inch x 13 inch x 3 inch deep piece back on the plane with me... It is some sort of burl.. its been so long since then, I don't remember what it is exactly. it has like your piece, beautiful medullary rays. My initial idea was to use a book-leaf design as part of a table top inlay. I took it to a timber specialist back where I live as there is many small areas that need to be filled... Over the years I look at it longingly, where little bits fall out when I pick it up. It seems sacrilegious, not to utilise its beauty in all its glory. I was put off by what the timber guy said at that time. And now, having watched many artists do amazing things with epoxy resin and timber an with all of the potentially inherent problems that can happen. I realise I don't have the skills needed to pull off reshaping it into something beautiful, especially given its actual size. Watching your video has inspired me to do or at least, get something done with it.

RESCUE...Love your work, You inspired me and my 13 year old son to attempt an epoxy coffee table with a matching end table from a slab of Cherry. We started with small charcuterie boards to get the hang of pouring epoxy and moved up to a small entry type table using black walnut. Then I got a great deal on a pre flattened, kiln dried 2" thick Cherry slab and we feel we are ready to go full bore pouring 6 plus gallons of epoxy (liquid gold as i call it). The slab is here and looks great, no major rot or soft areas. We will probably do the pour this weekend. Anyway, I was hoping I could inspire you to make a video detailing how you clean the epoxy tools. What do you use to clean the paddle mixers and buckets etc.? Thanks for all your inspiration.

I really appreciate your sense of humor. Too many people would pull the punches to seem likable. You just told everyone to cram their stupid big clock down their throats. I'm going to go remove ours from the wall now in shame, thanks for the life advice.

This is a side topic segue. I spent the last week deep diving into how RU-vid pays their content creators, and you my good sir, are hitting ALL the keystones. You have to be doing quite well from your channel, quite well indeed! And...let me say...IMHO, you deserve every $ bud, every red cent. Im a subscriber, and..i frequently watch the entire video you create. That, is because they are informative, and to me, super interesting. So...congrats, and keep building!....PS. No giant clock with french movie poster?? Shame on you! 😂😂😂😂

"Kintsugi" which is a japanese art form of making things more beautiful by repairing them (typically it was repairing pottery with gold). This totally works with the upscale market as well. I also like "Character" for pieces with lots of knots and cracks and chunks to work with.

I was thinking the same thing. Gold could work well with black too. I'm not sure quite how you'd go about it though.

Beautiful work! Don't beat yourself up about the table base having a wavy cut. Band saws by their nature, oscillate. This can be seen with a slow motion camera. It's only a problem on larger pieces like you had. I assure you, you did nothing wrong, fixed the issue exactly as I would have, and it looks great! Thank you for the videos! I've really enjoyed watching and hope to continue to do so for a long time. Cheers from NC

You are 100% correct - that tabletop is outrageously beautiful. I really like the base, but I think it clashes with the top - a simple metal base would (IMHO) worked better. Still, great work - better than anything I could ever do.

same. Or use the n3 for the base so they are both equally shiny.

Just stop blaming your wood supplier for your mistakes. He soaked the wood himself - and then blames the wood supplier that the wood had a high moisture content.

That came out absolutely gorgeous. How about "2nd Life Wood" for a name. I sure wish I had a shop and the income to try to do this kind of wood working. The biggest problem I would have is since Black Walnut is my most favorite type of wood I wouldn't have any money left since I would try to buy all of your work you have.

RESCUE.... Although it's not "repossessed", "repo table" would be a cool name. Also a name that wouldn't technically depreciate with the name itself. Just an idea, but I love the videos. I usually keep them on whilst working from home, so thank you for helping me get through hours of online work!! Much love and keep up the beautiful craftsmanship!
