Welcome to my channel! I make a lot of Nintendo gaming videos, especially for Paper Mario. I'll be doing craft and Lego videos too, so keep an eye out! Please subscribe and check out my content.
*1 & 2:* Great argument, and everything you said is pretty much a fact rather then an opinion. I don't think anyone could possibly disagree. *3:* 64 has Bow's Outta Sight ability which completely breaks the game. Vivian has a very similar move in TTYD, but that one doesn't break the game. Other then that though, I suppose you do have a point about the difficulty. Still, TTYD takes everything about the battle system in 64 and improves on it. I think that makes it the better game overall in that sense at least. *4:* I neither agree or disagree, as I'm not sure which game I would consider to have better music. Either way, this point is incredibly subjective and therefore a weak argument. *5:* Another point that can't be argued. Star Spirits were better, no question. *6:* It is very subjective, so again not exactly a strong argument. I'm not sure if there is actually more to do in Toad Town then in Rogueport or if it's just giving you the illusion that there is. Either way, I too prefer Toad Town. I just really like the design, and it feels more inviting and fun. *7:* I'd say that whether the bosses are all connected to the main villain or not isn't important, but the rest of what you said can't be argued. Another great point. *8:* I agree that it's more charming. I disagree that Bowser is "better" in 64, but he certainly plays a much bigger role being the main villain as opposed to being a side story. And yes, the Peach segments are a little more involved. You get to do more and explore more, and you can even find items for Mario. It's not a huge difference, but it's enough to be noticeable for sure. *9:* I think everyone misses that. TTYD has Yoshi as the replacement, but he doesn't come until almost halfway through the game. Using Yoshi isn't as fast either, and he can't be upgraded like spin dash can be. *10:* The only backtracking in the original TTYD I had an issue with is finding General White. Also, 64 has a lot more backtracking then you mentioned. Namely, Chuck Quizmo and Koopa Koot. The former is absolutely maddening and FAR worse then General White! At least with General White you know where to go next, and it doesn't last near as long as looking for Chuck Quizmo 64 times. Yes, those are side quests, but they still count. Lastly, I completely agree that 64 needs a remake. It's weird that they remade TTYD first as 64 would have benefited a lot more.
I honestly found the peach and bowser segments in TTYD so boring and a slog to get through. I just did not care about TEC, he felt underdeveloped and a bit of a plot device rather than an actual character. And the Bowser segments could be cut from the story and nothing would really change. In comparison, I found 64's peach and bowser segments a lot more interesting and engaging, and found them more interesting and better characters.
This was super creative! I love all the work arounds you came up with. I've wanted to recreate parts of PM64 in Minecraft creative mode for years now but I've never had the motivation to start. Idk if you're into Minecraft at all but I'd be really interested to see your take on the same thing!
1. TTYD Switch (10/10) 2. TTYD GCN (9.5/10) 3. SPM (8/10) 4. Paper Mario 64 (8/10) 5. Origami King (7/10) 6. Color Splash (6/10) 7. Sticker Star (5/10) TTYD is by far my favorite game in the franchise, as it has everything you could want from a Paper Mario game: solid turn-based RPG gameplay, a zany cast of followers and NPCs, a compelling story, and a solid visual style with just a hint of the paper aesthetic. And, the Switch TTYD remake is absolutely the definitive version of the game to play, with its handful of QOL changes and its greatly enhanced music and graphics. SPM for the Wii was a fun game. Its turning away from the established RPG mechanics definitely knocks it down a few points, and I also am not a fan of its visual style / character design. However, its 3D gameplay is creative, and it earns a few points back for having a compelling narrative, placing it just above PM64 for me. Paper Mario 64 is the baseline for the series. It is a fun game with decent RPG mechanics. Although the visuals are outdated and the story is quite basic, it is still very fun and I enjoy the storybook aesthetic. Origami King did a lot of things right, almost making it a return-to-form for the series (for example with its expansive overworld). The visuals are very gorgeous, and its use of the papercraft aesthetic was creative. However, the battle mechanics simply were not fun at all, the bosses took the papercraft aesthetic too far, and its lack of zany characters was very disappointing. Color Splash and Sticker Star are certainly the low points in the series. The battle system is shallow, and the characters and storytelling were uninteresting. That said, the games are not altogether awful or unplayable (they're not 0/10 games). Color Splash wins out over Sticker Star for having improved visuals, and the painting mechanic made it just that much more interesting.
Overall I DO like this remake, I've played it and I'm glad it exists. It gives my kids a chance to play this game I've loved. But that doesnt mean there aren't some things I miss from the original.
I also dont like how the game points out when someone is going to throw something at you anymore. Trying to find the item in a 200+ crowd and decide if you should attack or not is its own game.
Your right aboit that text speed. And I was SO bummed out you couldn't reverse the text. Like it's not standard in games, but I DID like it in the original. I miss it.
13:07 I think I prefer the original sewers. Central hubs just look boring. It's more intriguing, if the pipes are at least a little scattered around. The numberg are nice, though. Colors or symbols might have been better, I guess. But that's what the ground is there for.
I honestly agree with at least 90% of this list. The only thing that really stood out to me was putting the Excess Express above Lava Lava Island. Personally I get so much more immersed exploring the jungle and battling through the Volcano than I do with the murder mystery train ride, but fair enough. Not that you need my 2 cents but I think this is a solid list.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but as long as it's in a post Tubba Blubba state (lol) I would put the Gusty Gulch castle at the top of my list. It's so freaking huge, the possibilities are endless. All your friends could live there too and everyone would still have their own space. I drove through New Mexico on a solo road trip last year and something about the southwestern desert landscape and culture just felt so inviting. I had the Gusty Gulch theme blaring with the windows down on several stretches of interstate 🤣😎🌞
You sir, just earned yourself a new subscriber. 🙌 As someone else said below, I feel like I've found my people lol. TTYD is my thrid favorite game, with my second being Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and my first of course being Paper Mario. 😌
I played Paper Mario 64 after TTYD, one of the thing that impressed me the most is how many ideas were created by 64, for example it has not one but multiple duplighosts and the whole idea is from 64. So TTYD had a good base to work with, even if I prefere way more TTYD, 64 definitly have the ideas creation going for it
Best levels of all pm series in my opinion Chapter 7 paper Mario Chapter 3 of TTYD Super paper Mario chapter 6 Chapter 5 of sticker star Blue paint star color splash Tie between Red and Purple streamer
Something that isn't mentioned much is the modernization of the "offensive"/dated 2000s insults. The words "crazy", "dork", "airhead", "lame", "psycho", "nuts", "insane", "lunatic", "dawg", "nutjob" and all dialogue related to body weight have been removed or replaced.
One thing I don't like is the 3d effect on some places it works like the spikes in hooktails castle but for other stuff like sleepy sheep i loved how sleepy sheep was in the original i also dont like glitzviles music but i still love the game its pretty good
