Are you seriously saying you don’t do the basic research before buying a $6k camera? Who is buying any of these cameras without doing rudimentary research?

You will be surprised by a lot of people who buy a camera and don’t know a single thing about it because they don’t do the proper research, I worked along side some of these film makers where I had to share with them features about there camera that they didn’t even know

As a young filmmaker myself, i can say.... i have experienced most of the stuff you talked about in my first 4 months i started. Ive been shooting for 6 months now and im just getting started. But i aint gone never give up, and you never will neither. One thing i learned, is that... when you shoot, you have to have an free mind. My first 4 months was an struggle... but it was fun tho and i started studying my work and realized the mistakes that was made and im glad i made them. Just seeing somebody like you who think exactly like me when i shoot. is a blessing for me, and let me know that everything is ok and keep on grinding. Thank you for the heads up big bro, i needed this. Yo work ethic is great, and i like the clearness of the films clips you be shooting. It looks great. Im on my way to the top also. This vid hits bro! Exactly, LEARN YOUR EQUIPMENT! Hey man I want to thank you, I am officially going to be doing a film and their retainer I'm getting your young brother...the FX30. That's what I'm leaning on but IF I can find a great deal on it, your fallen brother... Lumix S5iiX lol. like right now, Thank goodness for being a prior sound engineer but that was for MUSIC, I'm working voices, film voice is slightly different so what am I doing... learning the sound for film(well more to say which vocal chain I'll use to get the music to duck with and the compression and all the good stuff. For me, IN THIS CASE because in essence i don't have actual "field experience". Just portfolio stuff that really does not go anywhere... So for ME I took the retainer and normally I don't share my business because people like to assume they paying my mortgage. So remember the convo about dude tryna slide on $200 a day? I took your advice and I said naw cuz, $4400 for the two week project and I need retainer(I never use the word deposit) and the rest of it on completion and I stuck to it. He comes back and states "How about 30% retainer, 40% on the production day completion, 30% when you deliver". I happily agreed. I WILL NOT accept any deal where my pay does not outweigh what they owe. Plus it's really close to my starting rate. But I also told him, I'm not shooting in any LOG profiles and doing major edits for this film because the budget is simply not enough. I will edit and create clips but I will not spend hours beyond editing(I will make corrections). So Yes, i'll be shooting cine4 and use my custom lut I've already made for the scene and apply it and correct, he agreed. Thanks bro, I believe I've finally made my way in and although I'm $20 shy of buying an FX30 from the retainer, I have options upcoming. So I guess you can say my moral of my short story is don't be afraid to step tf up and tell these clients who are PRETENDING to be cheap looking for okie dokes that you not having it. He was "having a hard time finding...".. nah, you were not, you were cheapskate search and couldn't find nobody big difference! So I went from $200 a day that equaled $16 ishy bucks an hour I literally denied, to $4400 which meets my demands semi but also pays me, mortgage for a couple months and I can live. I feel I owe you something off that because it happened within that next day after we spoke lol. Let me get an FX30 or Sony A7Riii first then I'll hook you up cashapp or square!

Freelancing is super hard for me, mentally. I’m now not been getting much sleep because I’m up thinking about my life decisions. I hate feeling broke. Worry about what’s being charge to my account. I don’t touch my video money. I do data analyst contract work on the side (that’s how I pay my personal bills) even with this IT contract my income is not constant. I’m considering getting a full time IT job to have some sort of peace of mind. But it’s just off one slow month making me think I can’t do this freelance thing forever
@dillondre
@dillondre 23 дня назад
I felt the same exact way at times, that’s why I highly suggest anyone who wants to start this path to always have different sources of income coming in just so you can have that peace of mind! That’s why I have another online business outside of videography that generates me enough money to where if I don’t want to freelance for 3 months I can and still be absolutely fine, it’s all about diversity in your income

Don't give up by no means. For someone that used to give up and "change careers" only to end up right back where God put me... take it from me. You are in that transition where you are about to pop off and I'm not just facebook metaphor regurgitating, I mean true spirit ish is about to hit you so good you never see if coming. I have to be a little tough here so please don't take it as backlash because I am literally semi-you. So first, you gotta stop worrying and start DOING. Stop worrying, you can't fight it. Feeling broke is just that, a feeling, are you really? Is delegation more of the lack of why you re not moving forward? If you were broke, you wouldn't be here seeing how to get the good stuff. Delegate! Freelance is tough period my friend. Most youtubers be making it look like they doing something big but only find out is spec work and friends, maybe folks they met. They ain't hittin it like DillonDre, myself and a couple others out here, we doing real ish, not content creating showing out and off just for likes and views. Don't dwell on what looks good in somebody else life, false perception is how people thrive off others who are "not as good"... that was my first down fall and reasons why I gave up the first time thinking I wasn't gonna go nowhere. Focus on what YOU can do to start delegating and begin the process of working your way out of those other people jobs so you can NOT be perse broke(I mean I know the reality, yes you are broke, but fix the mindset otherwise you will forever stay there). Ignore other people thoughts about YOUR stuff, they paying your mortgage? I'm positive you did things that helps and grows. You not broke, you are just defining your money so when you execute your plan, you getting it how we all should have started years ago. Look at your current work and start asking for your full worth. You got one job that pays the personal bills but is it paying you too? Divert to something that can make your life easier THEN you can focus on YOUR OWN stuff to be able to sustain you.

It all depends. Like you mentioned, if someone offered me $10-15k per month, I’d probably take that retainer client. But most potential retainer clients I have seen, want lots of ‘content’ for not much money. Which puts you closer to the position of ‘staff shooter/editor’ and there is a reason I left that life in favor of freelance. Not interested in producing 8 videos a month for $500 a month for someone…even if they are ‘only for social media.’

I just started my business around a year ago and have already ran into the people who dont know what they want. So i usually just ghost them after doing the back and forth of trying to figure out what they are looking for in a video. Also, quick question how did you learn to price your services. To this day, I have trouble trying to figure how to price my video services. Right now I do hourly for the shoot time and a flat rate for the edit, but I'm starting to see that's not the standard. Would it be better to do packages or how/where did you learn to price your work?
@dillondre
@dillondre 24 дня назад
So first off stop doing hourly! Reason being like I mentioned in the video I got contracted full day rate jobs and finished in 3 hours, if me and you did the same exact job and you was getting paid hourly I would have made more money and we basically did the same exact job! So stop doing hourly even if your just starting stick to full day rates and half day rates only, half day rate could be anything 6 hours and under and full day rates could start 7 hours and over (typically a full day rate is 10 hours, once you get into anything over that you wanna charge OT like you would a regular 9-5 working over 40 hours) Regarding your question about offering packages you absolutely can! Typically I go by “Kit fees” so in my kit I offer my clients (1 camera, 3 point lighting setup, both a wireless lav mic and XLR Boom mic, as well as a form of stability) all of that is included into my day rate, when pricing for a client give them one final number X amount is my full day rate and X amount is my half day rate, the most important thing I tell people is you can charge whatever you want if you have. A strong highlight reel to back you up! If I wanted to hire you to film me a Event and you told me your day rate is 1,000$ and you sent me your highlight reel and you had absolutely no work of any type of events and your reel was just week didn’t look good, you would get no response from me, the right clients are willing to pay High dollars if they know that you can provide value! You need to take into consideration when sending out quotes 1. The location ( are you traveling far for this job). 2. What it is exactly they want ( if they want both photo and video you should be charging for both photo and video, you don’t have to tell them if they don’t ask just include it into your day rate, so if the client wants one highlight reel and 600 photos both RAW and edited best believe you need to be charging for that! At the end of the day the moment you step onto the clients property where you will be working at you are running the risk of damaging your gear so why not be compensated in case anything happens to your gear ? trust me ik videographers who still use a sony a7iii and charge 1300$ yet there booked back to back!
@ShanygneKing
@ShanygneKing 24 дня назад
I’m getting mostly event work that’s within the 2-3 hour capture and I can agree they are not expecting to pay my $500 minimum engagement package. Now doing jobs that I drive to capture and edit for $200-300. I have no niche yet and is just taking what I can get. But I do want to get higher paid gigs so I can avoid burnout and putting miles on my car and camera. I do have an LLC so I have business expenses as well
@dillondre
@dillondre 24 дня назад
It’s okay that you don’t have a Niche the biggest thing you want to do now is really create a GREAT highlight reel that you’re able to pitch off to those higher paying clients! Also you definitely don’t want to put. A lot of miles on your car for a 200$ job🤣 I definitely did that early on and now have accumulated a lot of unnecessary miles and maintenance cost for basically little to nothing paying jobs haha but aye now I’m getting the higher paying jobs so I guess it paid off not to sure lol
@ShanygneKing
@ShanygneKing 24 дня назад
@@dillondre how you suggest I get into the more cinematography type of work (like commercial,brands,storytelling) with having more run and gun shoots under my belt.
@dillondre
@dillondre 24 дня назад
@ShanygneKing so in talking with a couple of cinematographers who do more narrative work then I do, they all told me basically brands want to see from cinematographers that they have other brand recognition, a brand will 100% trust you 20x more if they see you have potentially worked with other brands or business alike, so like everyone might tell you getting out there and creating a spec Ad, something that a brand you may want to work with would potentially create! You can send cold emails all day but honestly in my experience it won’t do much for you, nothing you say can get you hired if you do not show proof of your work, if You want to film a commercial for “Minute Maid lemonade” then go look at all there previous commercials and study it, learn how can you make that commercial even better, now and days everything is about marketing so how can you as the cinematographer create a peace of marketing material for these clients that stands out?

I just subscribed. I appreciate these kind of videos and honest topics that bring together the community in the comments. It gives perspective on what’s currently going on. Everything in life is always evolving and no one should get discouraged because this is a challenge to explore the possibilities of learning additional skills. I’ve been focused on figuring out how to solve more problems for clients than just video. I’ve personally been learning more about marketing, social media and content strategy. For the record I am not brand new to the industry but also not a veteran. Just someone who’s been paying close attention to the advancements in affordable creative technology. I believe eventually everyone will have the ability to create top level creative agency work using AI. The question is how soon will it happen?

As far as you observing the potential “holes” in the videography niche that is a very wise choice to make something very slept on! The more you can offer a client that isn’t just “video related” the more structure you have to grow your business, eventually being able to scale beyond measures! With the film industry you are able to learn so many different skills beside just hitting record on the camera big tools like social media, marketing, Ad campaigns all play a vital role in freelancing if you can give your client more the chances of scaling your business is endless! Action brings action the more you can provide the more you will see results!

some clients can increase budget if you break it down to them all that is going to be required on your end as the freelancer to get the job done so for your case a 12 hour job is required of a full day rate that’s pretty much non negotiable, the fact there is multiple roles I would allot to the client if possible to increase budget so your able to hire out other freelancers if you wanted to so you can lift off some fo that work load regarding “sound recorder” but again you don’t have to because my last vlog I posted I was basically the DP and sound op so it is possible to do but budget has to be compensated especially take into consideration however far it’s going to be for you to travel, I would try to let the client know his budget isn’t realistic and if they are not bugging then you walk away with no stress on you

Clients have always tried to lower costs, and younger folk (ex-students) will always under-cut seasoned professionals. Neither of those things have changed in fifty years. And the technology will always improve. We can't do anything about any of these issues. Unless a person (DP, Director, Editor, Gaffer etc.) is established in Film and Television, then realistically they'll probably be doing something completely different by the time they are 40. The exception being Writers and Producers, who, if they are any good, and can survive long periods of unemployment, can always bounce back with a great project.

I like this, because it's about understanding times importance. Although I partially disagree with the second point. I say partially because I get that you're not meant to state something against the directors vision as an operator, this is usually because the points should've been raised during the test shoots or the meetings and correspondences before. But also because usually the director is dealing with their won doubts during the shoot. While still , I'd say the reason I agree is because it is good to follow the plan through to the end, because some scenes need to be shot for the sake of the fact that they were a part of the overall plan. And when reaching the end of the plan (Post-Production, Distribution and Marketing), this may be the better time that your suggestion comes into play, when it may or may not fit in as a scene within the theme of the films plot.

I’m not huge into filmmaking yet but I’m constant looking to learn new things and I’ve noticed a lot of people around me who claim to be this videographer or whatever they may claim, don’t do any research into their craft. I’ve had convos where people don’t understand white balance and changing it. Or what different focal lengths will do. Like some very basic stuff. Then there’s us who put in mad work and research and I feel like not too many see that, they just see their following and assume they’re good. Like I seen one video the other day where you can see the focus breathing as the camera couldn’t find where to focus because they didn’t light it right. But hey he has thousands of follows so he must be good.

EVERYTHING YOU SAID BRO!!!! ... and also because they think equipment has to be top notch or bust, man I got a 28-80mm KIT LENS I put on my Sony... bruh... sigma 24-70mm looking in video LOL. People need to stop fake networking and start aligning to the market where it's needed!!! Now for ME, I'm not failing I personally think I'm holding back and that's me finding work! Production hub too expensive for the year but I'll try staff me up for $150 a year and now i have some actual content, it should drive me something to go on. Good stuff bro!

Gear is a big issue that people have a issue with time and time again, it’s something I feel as they grow they will soon realize it’s not the number 1 priority all the time ProductionHub for me has been a great source , you could always try the monthly subscription, it really just takes 1 job from there to pay for the entire year and then still leave you some profit in your pocket! As far as staff me up I have gotten couple jobs from there but not very much, it’s more for like TV/News style jobs but never the less still can get some cool jobs from there

@@dillondre Yea I'll give them a shot on the monthly but yea I agree on everything. I also feel some believe that because thy don't have enough, they can't get anywhere and that's not true at all, you saw my other comment with my job.. I thought the same thing, that job fell right on into my lap and I took it. RESULTS bring the client. Homeslice on the foot in equipment, I give him that too but lets not confuse that you don't have to have the expensive stuff, you just have to meet their needs. My lil ol workhorse camera I got now, I can timecode, broadcast, send a separate signal for streaming, even my little cheap wireless devices for client view did the job smoothly.

@@tonypmedia what i was saying is that some people go " oh gear dont matter " and then show up with a crappy camera or couldnt bother to try and get access to a better one. last thing you want is to have to compromise and not deliver - the line about " . . and a fhd60p coping for 4k60 wont do. Bill for the SsD. Plain and simple. We transfer is pretty decent but also you have to set aside time to transfer. And those hosting sites are also a monthly fee for those bigger TB files. So it’s a choice you have to make. Also, try looking for a different monitor that has the back for a battery solution and the connection for your wireless so that you don’t have a weird setup. But it’s all a learning experience
@dillondre
@dillondre Месяц назад
Yea I use we transfer time to time it’s okay, As for the monitor I don’t usually have it setup to be used as a wireless monitor, so with the budget I was provided, (which wasn’t very much) I just allotted to make work with what I already have to keep cost low, in the end everything worked out

I don't go to camera clubs to begin with because you already know every one of them is in it for themselves unless you have something to offer then they play you cheap so they can take the credit. I also don't go to camera clubs because welp.. they all follow each other's rules and perspectives. The moment I speak, I lose them all so I don't bother to begin with. One thing I like to add though is those should consider calling and even visiting places. No I'm no northborders but I was around before him. Emailing, texting, dm'ing, mailing... NONE of that ever worked. Getting in their faces stopped all of the denials and rudeness they give over the phone. When i get in their faces, they hide their real side and allow me to at least speak my words! Then they get price curious, 6-10 I land them right then and there. Those have to find what works best. I might try this production hub since int's not really expensive for the year. All you need is one from that and you've made your $159 back plus some
@dillondre

I found very similar success In exactly what you said, Hitting the DM’s, Cold calling over the phone or even via email all that was just very time consuming and didn’t land me much results, like you said doing it that way rises a greater chance of them just ignoring you!! The more accessible the media industries have become, the more competition we will face. It's kinda like how Capitalism is. There's constantly a creation and cycling of material, in this case being media creation, that now people are willing to have lower quality products simply because it is far cheaper. I'm both happy and concerned because it means that this medium is far more accessible to the wider public, but at the same time it makes just as dispensable as the typical mainstream jobs that we don't want to be in.

I feel mixed on this issue. I think there’s no way to protect against clients wanting to pay less for lower quality work - I think it’s fair if they’re fine with taking a big quality hit to save a buck. Where I dislike this is when someone rents gear to a production at a hugely reduced rate to what the other local guys are charging. For a long time when Titan Tubes were out people were renting them at $500/day here, but a few guys were renting them at like $200 to get more gigs. Ultimately that’s just a race to the bottom that hurts us all, and definitely not worth it. Great video buddy!

The prices the more established people have forces there to be a lower priced option. Also the older more established teams don't like to hire new people without much experience. So how are they going to get experience?
@dillondre
@dillondre Месяц назад
A question i asked my self over and over when I first started, but for me I found there is people with great experience out there willing to hire someone or even mentor with little experience, it’s really just about finding the right people and that takes time, you may talk to 20 directors who are in the industry that you want to be in and only 1 may be willing to give you that opportunity, so it definitely is possible because that has happened to me it just takes the right network

This will always happen, I did this working my way up from videographer to DoP/Producer, and the trick is to find the problem aware clients who prioritize value based purchasing vs commoditized based purchasing, so basically these clients will understand what good visuals look like & understand the value of an established production with good infrastructure & how it solves their business issues - surrounding yourself with close clients and/or producers/directors who have those clients will solve the issue 😎
