Hey! I am an artist in Los Angeles and a prolific knitter! I aspire to knit beautiful, fashionable, and WEARABLE knitwear for life in the land of sunshine. Here I go, casting my little net into the sea of fiber podcasts; the community that helped keep my head above water during the last few years. You can also find me on Instagram @andrea_socalknitter
I have been knitting for 67 years and alter knits by running them in on the machine. I know most knitters would be apalled, but I am not here for ripping out + knitting again. I do not zig zag, just a straight stitch. I really don't care what people think!
So happy to find you in my feed! I love your honesty. And swearing lol. We all F up! We all hear you and feel. Your mum’s shawl is beautiful. And your SoHo Square’s colours are FABULOUS. Trust yourself. It’s ok to get pulled into the hype. But it’s also good to be honest with yourself. You’ll figure it out. When I have “fails”, I always go for a “sure” thing to remember why I love knitting. It’s for me. Just knitting makes us part of this wonderful community. Not the what we’re knitting! Won’t be at Flock, but I’m going to Rhinebeck and I will absolutely say hello to you! ❤. Enjoy your trip and the connection at your father’s house 💕
Hi Andrea, your Kuutar is gorgeous on you, I love the color and it looks like it fits you perfectly. Any time I make mistakes in my knitting I always recognize it's only ME who sees these things and after a while I don't even notice them any more!! Your mom's shawl is lovely, I'm going to have to add this to my favorites list on raillery!
I understand the pull of the experience for the Rhinebeck sweaters (the more popular releases anyway)…..what I would say, is that 99% of the time when I have allowed myself to get pulled in on a pattern that I knew in my heart wasn’t something I really loved, I found I never wore the sweater. I totally resist now. I do love your color combo though . I have knit the sheep camp sweater by Native Knitter and I love it. I think your colors would look amazing for the sheep camp. I have knit quite a bit this summer but not sure I’m in love with anything so a bit different from what you are experiencing but still a little blasé. I’m also determined to work through stash so i yanked out some yarn to get the pressed flowers cardigan on my needles….am so enjoying this one. Enjoy Flock - one of these years I’ll get there.
Hi Andrea, great to see you again! Sorry for all your knitting frustrations, but they do happen, I get it! LOVE your Mom's shawl, it’s so lovely. That beautiful pattern is on my definite wishlist! Have fun at Flock…and regarding your dilemma about the Rhinebeck sweater by Andrea M…I wouldn’t knit something just because lots of others are…I’d have to love it for me to spend the money and the time knitting on it. Currently working on my Artus and the KISS shawl. Take care! Xoxo ✨💛✨
Thank you for sharing here! I think you're right and it's what my gut is telling me, too. I'm keeping myself open in case some yarn beckons for the project😉
Hi Andrea! I related so much to what you said about the Mowry Rhinebeck sweater. At first I felt zero resonance. Well, less than 24 hours later I found myself shelling out $$$ for a beautiful kit from FDF. I finished a Tesselated Vest in June and just really enjoy her patterns. I'm also going to Rhinebeck and just had to hop aboard the FOMO Framed bus! I love the yellow and brown version of the Framed sweater that you started. Here's hoping I see you on the hill! ❤🎉
What a treat to find you here today. I've missed you - and am So delighted that we can connect at Flock. I'm there Saturday as well, with the same intention of visiting all the booths, shopping for some select projects and trying not to be tempted by All the Things. I'll connect on Instagram too, and perhaps we can plan a time. I watched an interview with the gal in charge of the festival (apologies, her name escapes me) and she noted that there were tables/seating areas on the stairs to the mezzanine? Perhaps a meet up there? And....about the Rhinebeck knit-a-long. I'm there with you on the FOMO. (And of course, even more so, as I am not going this year.) But if I may be so bold, it's not really the style of garment/graphic that I conjure up when I think of you. The hard edged demands of the pattern seem incorrect, somehow. So a thought? Why not use the chart and make a fun little cowl/scarf/thingie, that salutes this years pattern? Wear it, and gather on the hill with all the others, and then move on into making what is more in your aesthetic. You have a strong and personal sense of beauty, as an artist and as a woman. Trust your hesitation. See you SOOOOON. xo
I haven’t been able to knit and I haven’t watched any podcasts because I’m so sad because my Dad passed away three weeks ago. I just miss him so much and I can’t stop crying, it’s crazy. I’m a 64 year old woman for goodness sakes! But I saw you had a new one and I love your podcast so I put it on and you spoke about your Dad and I loved that. Thank you. I just wanted to share.
I'm so sorry for your loss- I truly understand how foundational it is. Give yourself all the time to mourn- it's healing however painful. I'm so looking forward to being in his house, in his town with all its natural beauty❤ Sending you my love and condolences.
Your Kuutar top is gorgeous! I love that neckline. I have learned to make tanks much smaller because I'm often using a plant based or blend yarn and it always stretches out. It looks like I'm knitting for a kid or a doll when I work on tank tops. 🤣 Did you consider reknitting it? Isn't it funny how we love to knit but often ignore the little voice that tells us something isn't quite right? I put my knits in time out instead of unraveling and reknitting too. I'm sorry your Sabai top turned out so big! I chose the ribbing at the neck and I love mine. Again, I made it a little smaller. I've never heard of Flock. Have a great time and I hope you will share some footage!
Yes!!! I've definitely learned that lesson! I've frogged mine and plan to re-knit as it's such a great design. Flock is fairly new, in it's second year. xoxo
Happy to see this new episode! I have been going through some rough knitting patches myself 😅 your mums shawl is beautiful. Love your yarn combos. Enjoy your festival and family time 💕
Thanks for the shoutout! I love how your sweater is coming out and I like the Nutiden idea too. I totally get what you mean about joining in on the hype- that gets me all the time! Hope to see you at Rhinebeck. ❤
Good to see you again! I always enjoy knitting and watching. I am currently making the Calliope Sweater which is a free pattern on Ravelry. I feel your pain on making things that dont turn out! Ive started this sweater over so many times i think i could have knit two of them. Anyway finally have the gauge right and am making this in a really pretty oatmeal color of a kid silk mohair held with a cotton alpaca blown yarn. Check out the pattern, I think you may like it :)
Hot. ohMyYes. I'm still in Italy, directing, and none of the theaters, stores, restaurants, have air conditioning. A lesson in gratitude!! See you at Flock- can't wait!
I just found you 😮, watching from Australia , i think your jumper is absolutely gorgeous on you , subscribed and liked your video . Will be tuning in regularly 😊
I wish I could get into sewing because I want the finished product, but just don’t enjoy the process. Maybe it takes a special teacher like the one you have! And, yes, please share recipes!!
Loved the Vaster Wilds (and Matrix) & I think the recipe idea sounds so cool. Ps have you seen Argil tank- it’s got an interesting approach to stripes!
I really loved the encouragement from the #pierreaffairekal🩵🩵🩵 I really learned that when it comes to shawl colors, I love shading/fading best of all - certainly the most successful of my color experiments! Thank you for the company!
Hi Andrea! I was SOO happy to have participated in the #pierreaffair KAL. The Pierre shawl is a perfect companion when I go to overly air conditioned places like the theater. Very cozy! Happy June/happy summer ☀️
I love sewing and quilting. I recommendation for very simple, beginner friendly patterns. 100 Acts of Sewing is great. She’s in the Bay Area and has a book that is great and includes a few of her basic patterns. I’ve made a whole wardrobe with her pieces, all in linen. I’m here for the recipes and used to be a chef in the old days.
Uh oh, watch out for the fabric stash that is sure to start taking over your life! I started sewing in 2020 and have a small stash. My daughter and I made some small projects like bags. She even made me an interchangeable needle roll! I haven't sewn since 2021 but my little fabric stash is still there, calling out to me! 🤣 I'm going to start on the SABAI top by Susanne Muller soon. I was looking for a boat neck tank that is a little looser on the body. I was going to just knit 2 rectangles and seam but I like the neckline and shoulder in her pattern so I'll give it a go. It's too hot for wooly knits in So Cal at the moment! Love your bandana colors, BTW!
Hahahahaha, I hear you! I cast on the Sabai top the night I released the podcast! It's a really nice shape and I actually got gauge with recommended needles! I'm using the Isager Linen Trio 2 double. We'll be knitting in tandem!
Hi Andrea 🌸 For striped tanks, take a look at the Stripey Turtle Tank and Sailor Swift. Of course you can use any solid tank/cami pattern and just make it striped. Always open to hearing about good recipes and good reads! I’m a huge James Michener fan, LOVE his historical fiction saga’s; I find them rich with details and characters, as well as enthralling and educational. Xoxo Lisa 🌺
Love watching you, love all your projects, you have very nice taste. Also love those Kuro Neko bags, would you be able to share the link where I can purchase? Thank you.
Great video as always. For an incredible tank, check out Colorado Knitter podcast who just finished a stunning tank by Gundrun Johnston. Don’t think pattern is published yet. Warning: lace weight. Despite that I’m going for it.
The best cable tool that I’ve ever used is a toothpick lol. This is terrible because I love beautiful tools but here I am with my toothpick… I really appreciate the book suggestions! I have the same problem with the narration and prefer to read them myself but then have to give up knitting while I do it. I also love foreign movies but I can actually read the subtitles while I knit so maybe there’s hope.
Hello! Future fibre podcast has a great episode on summer tanks. 🩷 I loved your project bags and projects. I am a sewist and avid reader and knitter. Trying to balance it all 😅 lovely episode! Thanks for sharing.
Hi, Andrea, I’m now all caught up with your videos…and newly subscribed as well! Love your 'hiking sweater'…I might have to try that yarn. Quick question on the pink cardigan you’ve worn in previous episodes, done in the MYPS chunky mohair yarn, how many skeins did you need? Thinking of making one…thank you! Have a lovely summer, XOXO, Lisa 🌸🌺🌼🌞
@@KNIT_LA ok, thanks! I also looked at her website to see how many she sells in a cardigan kit. I’ve got 3 of her kits, bought a few years ago, so far made two of them. Great yarn!
