Prior to the ban on white shark I hooked one from my boat incidental to thresher fishing. I was using a Penn 50 wide reel, and roller guide rod with a whole bonito as bait. Was able to get a visual on the shark as it was moving slow. There is no way you could land one unless you had way heavier gear. I cut my line after about 3/4 hour as the shark didn't seem to realize it was hooked, very poor sport. I don't know why anyone would try to mess with one.
Just had the same problem with a 40 narrow LD. When I started stripping it down, the cam follower had started to chip apart. It's plastic in the Fathom II reels. I was not too pleased to find that out.
Good old Newsome the nuisance taking a man's right to fish. Now the sharks will over populate. Amd some one will get eaten. U see how sick liberal thinking is that animals life is more important then human life u al have to get ride of Newsome b4 it's too late. Today will be sharks next he will outlaw fishing all of it. Is this what u want.
I have one of the new fathoms as well. Mine seems to be doing something similar. It looks like it’s corroding underneath the paint causing it to bubble and break away. It hasn’t hit anything. I contacted Penn about it but because it is one month it off warranty they don’t want to cover it. I’m not happy with this model of reel or penn’s customer service.
I just bought a Fathom 11 30 at a local shop in Mexico. Have not fished it yet. Should I return it before it’s too late ? I can’t really send back to Penn from where I live in Baja. :(
Those jigs are designed for saltwater, saltwater has a much higher density than freshwater. Testing them in freshwater doesn't give a accurate representation of the action of the colt snipers. All saltwater jig manufacturer's test there jigs in saltwater tanks.
Crazy California is being run by crazy Democrats, landlords are losing rights and all wildlife is protected maybe fishing will be cruelty to fish and jail time????
This is why I never fish with bait, ... not ever..! I avoid 99% of nontarget species by casting lures only.., as I know what will take lures and what won't. Personally, I think shark fishing is pointless and a waste of time and tackle because you will eventually get a bit off and those big stainless hooks are not cheap and neither are stainless wire leaders, or snaps, ... You know the drill…. So, .. If people stop fishing with bait... Problem solved….!
After years of seeing regulations become stiffer and more unreasonble its seems the rules are not conservation. the rules are because Non fishing vegans think you are wasteful and should just eat farm salmon and tilapia. Rock fish is being made illegal over time, salmon is now illegal in california as DGF make repeated mistakes with resources.
In short, you can't fish shark. Ask any marine biologist, White sharks are known to be in all coastal waters and bays. White sharks are pretty much found globally. Time to hang up the shark gear along with Abalone gear. What's next? You can't fish where fish are known to frequent? Can't hunt where animals are known to frequent?
There are no drones allowed on the beach I fish, the only time I've seen a drone was when someone(probably DFW) kept stopping and hovering their drone right in my face. I moved to another hole, they follwed and did the same thing. This happened about 3 or 4 times until I got fed up and thought, "you want it? You got it pal". Bullseyed the drone with my plug and sank it. Reeled it in, cut my braid free of the props, got my lucky craft back and tossed the drone back in the drink. Waited for someone to approach me and they never did. Pretty sure it was DFW hiding in the bushes. But since drones aren't allowed on that beach, maybe they didn't want to catch an earful from me? If it was some jackass just trying to keep me from fishing, I expect they would have tried to run up on me and act a fool.
I have a question what size line and what rig do you use? I just moved here a few years ago and I’m trying to get more involved with saltwater fishing I grew up only fishing in rivers so it’s a big change for me.
This is such a complex question, and requires a very long answer. This specific video I was fishing a 40lb knocker rig. If you aren’t familiar with that rig, it’s basically a simplified Carolina rig. But depending on what kind of fishing I’m doing i fish as low as 15lb and all the way up to 300lb leaders. I’ve spent the last 10 years reading and doing research and most importantly talking to the people who have been doing it a lot longer than I have out on the water. I try and learn something new every time I fish. There is so much knowledge and experience that goes into fishing Southern California and that’s one of the main reasons why I love it!
