Better than the low/mid 30's mpg of my old 990smt ! That and the rear tyre gone in less than 2kmiles was enough to sell!! Keeping my licence and Staying alive also played a part in that decision!!! 😉
@@youwills1 I did want one for quite a while. But only as a second bike. I wanted a real all rounder, and that is why I chose a ktm 890 smt in the end... still, the kawasaki is a lovely looking bike....
@@Ukmongoose3 my bike feels like it's around 110 bhp with the cat delete and the hi flow air filter. To be honest, the 990 smt should be with us in 2025... so I am sure it will get a power up grade with the 990 engine. ( the 990 duke is an awesome bit of kit. I rode it last week)
@@dean-does-stuff-81 Hello! I have a 2010 Multistrada which I have had from new, amongst other bikes, including a 2014 SMCR 690. The multi is decatted and PcV’d with a Mivv slip on, down a tooth at the front and has Marchesini forged ali wheels amongst other things, so its considerably lighter than standard, say, around…. I’m guessing…. 210 kilos, maybe a little more. I really fancy the SMT, but I think it might actually do the same as my multi, which helps me do stable wheelies, can help me drag my knee and is faaaaast with super stable handling at big lean on Corsa 4’s which stick like glue and are blessed with stable handling. It’s a measured 147hp on a reliable dyno (but who knows eh?!) hence I reckon the SMT would be ace with 140/150 horses and circa 95tflb of torque. What do you think? Would you trade to a 990?
@@Ukmongoose3 when the 990 smt comes out l, I expect it to be 115 to 120 bhp max... but they are light bikes. Around 195 kg. Also, they ride like a super moto. The big multistrada is a different beast. It isn't all about bhp numbers for example. Peak bhp is basically just bragging rights. The smt really is just an off road bike on sticky tires and hopped up suspension. I think that the 990 smt will benefit from the newer gearbox, slicker electronics and slightly punchier engine.... I would also suspect that my smt is more flickable than a 2010 multi. As one is basically a big touring bike and the other is a super moto. Best thing is to grab a test ride... my 890 smt is one of the best bikes I have owned, I had around 50 bikes to date...
@@dean-does-stuff-81 I live in Scotland, so I’m looking for an additional bike to use in conditions that threaten rain. The SMT fits my parameters for this purpose. Pilot 6’s, flickable in the dry, good enough to be comfy through the showers. I think you’d be surprised at my multi. Most people are and as a sportsbike nut, I find it very easy indeed to chuck about and have some fun. I’d love another sportsbike at some point, I just love the supermoto riding position. My SXV 550 got me into that.
One of my weekly rides takes me by a huge Poland Spring water bottling plant and all day semi box trucks and water trucks are traveling the roads and they are so damn slow. Roads are at least a wider to allow for passing
2:26 Talking price: At least over here in DE you should be getting AMAZING deals on these new and demo-bikes! I think the bike is a big success, but it's styling held back sales... I have a 701 and a Super Duke 3.0. Considering switching the Beast for SMT, since I love the 701's riding style so much... Can I ask: How do the gears feel? As crispy as they do on the sportier Bikes like the Super Duke? Or a little more doughy/vague? Thanks for the vid, much appreciated!
@@mcbrite hi, thanks for watching 👍. I recently rode the 990 duke, and I will admit that the gear box on the new duke is definitely an upgrade over the 890 smt. However, they are totally different beasts. I rode a couple of bikes back to back, then got back on my smt. I have ro say, I was happy to be back on the SMT. Sure it isn't as flickable as the duke, and doesn't have those amazingly sharp brakes and super slick gearbox... BUT, it has some thing all of it's own.... the way the bike rides is just so easy and fun. My advice is rode one for an afternoon.... you will want one too. Personally, I feel you could say that sales are low because of looks, but to be honest I don't believe that is the case. There is a stigma about ktm's, in the same way there was 25 years ago about BMW, and we all know how that story ended... the 890 adventure is possible the best off road bike in its class, and the smt is literally an adventure with longer forks and a smaller wheel, so it makes sense that it is a great bike too...
Applying the product on the inside of the chain is a better option though, since it's the part which actually connects to the sprockets! At least this is how ive been taught.. it's a bit more complicated though!
@@LeDemiChef thanks. I am planning a deep clean and re wax of the chain... the wheels are coming off tomorrow to go for a paint job. So I plan to sort the chain whilst the wheels are away for a few weeks.. Thanks for watching 👀
@@dean-does-stuff-81 I never thought of removing the chain completely to clean it, but I'm starting to think it could be worth the hassle... Every time I clean it and reapply the grease it ends up being too much or too little... Usually too much and it goes everywhere, especially on the wheels 😭 thanks for the videos! A blessing to have someone spread info on this amazing but apparently rare bike!
Hi, can you confirm that the Powerparts seat is actually harder? So the padding is not as soft as the standard one, correct? But is it as tiring as all KTM seats or acceptable?
Hi, as i show in the video, the power parts seat is most harder, for sure.. I think it will come down to personal preference tbh. For me I like it, and I will say it was a transformation for the better. ( that is my personal experience) If the bike is just that little bit too tall for you, then I think it is money well spent. I have done a couple of 7 to 8 hour days ion this bike with the power parts seat, with only a fuel stop of around 15 mins in between. I did stand up on the pegs to stretch out my legs and back a number of times. but I didn't have any issues with my bottom... ( thanks for watching)
Nice to see what its like there. Why do bikers always live in their mirrors when one is behind. I put videos like yours on when am in workshop working on bike! Keep them coming. Btw, you are much more sensible than me 😂 27.51
@@tonyhewitt5425 Thanks for watching Tony. I am planning to do a ride later this week if the rain stops. Next week the wheels go off to be painted, so won't have the bike for 2 weeks while I am away on holiday. Perhaps I will try and ride around some of the other cities. Was there any thing you would like to see? LETS DO SOME STUFF 💪
@dean-does-stuff-81 What colour are wheels going? I would like to see inside that huge motorbike shop you rode round! Maybe some demos on 1290 Adventure, see how it compares for you? I adored it, but just too big and ugly!!
@@tonyhewitt5425 I am in talks with that big bike store. I have a plan to meet with the head sales guy this week. So expect a lot more different bikes being reviewed in the future.
I mean your whole infrastructure is crumbling and ours is fine. So it's kinda rich coming from you. I agree the signage could be better but there's no way you can realisticly claim the roads in the Flemish cities are bad.
@@dmor6696 yeah but the planning is incredibly poor and exceptionally unsafe.... no safe path ways for the public. No protection or segregation from the works. No proper signage. Trip hazards every where. Imagine a blind person trying to navigate this...
Hi Dean, if we used a scale from 1 to 100, where 100 is the initial vibration of the stock bike, what score would you assign to this green configuration? I'm asking you because I would like to make this change, but I would like to understand how much it affects in percentage. Thank you!
@@michael07nz sure. I think the best way to explain it, is that it is more of a hum now. And before it was a strong buzz. But keep watching, as I am going to try to add bar weights. So that might help further. Thanks for watching 👀
@@mikeainsworth5840 I had a 2013 GSA, but the over all cost of buying and ownership has put me off the whole brand tbh. That is why I was so excited when the SMT was launched. As soon as I saw it, I wanted a test ride. Once I rode it, I bought one that afternoon...
@@invictalad I had previously checked the oil level after riding 7.5 hours solid. The oil window was reading exactly the same when the oil was hot as it was when cold. In this video, the engine was cold. I have run the bike up to temp and re checked the oil and it is the same level now when hot. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 👍
@@jimharness1326 if you go to 30 seconds into the video, I hold the spray can up to the screen 👍 Also, if you read the description, I already posted a link to it. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching 🙂
Hey Dean, nice vid as per usual! I do have a question, is the radiator cover an "extra" piece, as in, is it in addition to the regular fanned cover? Thanks!
@@LeDemiChef firstly, thanks for watching. The grill is a ktm power part. Part number 63535040000EB. Just to let you know, it is quite a faff of a job to swap it out. Side panels off, and there are 2 tricky bolts at the top that when you undo them, there is a bracket that can drop down and then it is a big job, rather than a small one.
Handy hint, especially during summer. Spray the front area of the bike with AG interior cleaner. Leave it for 5 mins All the bugs come off without a trace. No scratches. Spray off, clean as normal.
Hi Tony, Thanks. I don't spray any water down the pipe, and I always run my bike hot after every clean to dry off the engine and any moisture that may get down the pipe. Plus it is worth to note, that petrol (Gas US) has a high water content, and there is often water build up in the exhaust when starting and running any engine for the first few mins. Plus this isn't like washing an off roader (moto X bike), where you might use the pressure washer to wash off tons of mud. for that I would defiantly agree with your comment and add a bung. But for what I am doing here, a tiny bit of water wont matter in the exhaust can. I think more water could get in the pipe if it was standing in a heavy rain storm... Thanks for watching man....🤩
Well, if you are getting 70 mpg and I got 78 mpg. Then I think we have the answer. I did also do some more spirited riding ( a mixture of riding ) and that got me 73 mpg. So If they are true readings, I would say that the decat and k and n have helped with the fuel... 😬
Been really impressed with my economy, the bike is brought out and given a hard time each time, and gets 170 to a tank. Doing a road trip next year, so looking at 200miles plus, could it be the perfect allrounder!?
@@invictalad it is just such a great bike. A real do it all bike. Like the early 1200 gs, or the 900 hornets I used to have. I just love riding my 890 smt...
@@geecee4746 I have to say it... It is possibly the best bike I have ever had.. I just hope that they make a 990 smt next year... and that it is even better...
Great video as usual! A fun trick I like to use for cleaning my wheels is Krud Kutter (available in the US at Home Depot) combined with a Magic Eraser. For me, it’s mind-blowing how well it works to remove the brake dust and carbon residue left by the brakes.
Hay man, thanks for watching.... good to get tips from real people, that ride... 👌 over here we don't have those products, but I am always on the look out for things that make cleaning easier.
Hey Dean, I've following your videos and just today, as I was washing my SMT, I was wondering how to do it properly. Thanks! Did you remap the bike after the cat delete?
Thanks so much for watching. 😊 there was no need to remap the bike. But it is worth noting that I changed the air filter to a k&n filter. I may well do a video on installing the cat. There is always a lot of questions about the cat...
@@LeDemiChef I would say that the sound is a massive improvement, and also I believe the k and n air filter helps with that. The bike does feel faster to me too... I Really love the sound it makes under load, and when you shift with the quick shifter. It sounds better than most of the after market exhausts and I still run the stock end can.
Thanks for the feed back. I am going to be doing a 6000 kilometre review this week. I have new cameras and mic now. This was recorded on a mobile phone... So please subscribe and let me know what you think of the new vid. Thanks for watching.
Did the same on mine ☺️ I’m 5.7 30 inch inseam, according to KTM the low seat option is 840mm vs 860mm of the standard. Significant improvement on my behalf. Hope you like the bike as much as I do
Yeah, for me the sear being g more narrow was the key. 100 % changed the bike for the better for me. Possibly the best bike I have ever owned. Secretly hoping they male the 990 smt 🤞 subscribe for more on the SMT 👍
Zero concern. I have had a conversation with the large dealer near me. He says that over all the ktms have been as reliable as any of the top brands over the past 3 years or so. Roughly 2 in every 100 ktms they sell have some issues. And mostly nothing to do with the engines... so I don't really have any concern. The bike has a warranty in any case. And I also know that ktm are aware of some issues and thus far have been very accommodating to any customers that have had issues. The reason I stopped buying bmw's was because all the issues I had over the years... so it some times is what it is...
@@dean-does-stuff-81 Hey mate, thanks for the detailed answer. I'll be holding out for a better rendition of the Husky that's all European made. I'm a sixties kid and although the KTM appeal from an engineering standpoint I just can't get along with the transformer styling. Glad you love it though, it seems like a hell of a machine.
Ive been riding my 400sm for 5 years now. I really want to buy this bike, I'm getting into touring more and my supermoto has no protection. Do you recommend this bike? Have you had any issues with oil weeps or leaks yet? Its a tough pill to swallow buying a bike for 15000 USD and not being able to test ride one but it ticks all the boxes for me.

Thanks. I looked for a good way to get the mic close to the end can, so I could try to pick up the sound of the bike, because a lot of people ask me what it sounds like with the arrow cat delete and the standard end can. Thanks for watching 👍
This is a 2023 bike. They don't have the sensor in the cat. The 2024 bikes do. So that means that you will need to buy a cat delete that has the place for the sensor, or find a way to by pass this. If I find any thing about this issue for the 2024 bikes, I will make a video about it for you. Thanks for watching...
Ah... very interesting. I see that ktm offer 3 colour's green (soft) the clear or yellow that they come with (medium) and red (hard) I am going to see if I can get hold of the green ones and try them out. Thanks for the tip 👍
@@riko.4174 I have a feeling there won't be a 990. And if there is, it will be a while to wait. Probably 2025. To be honest, I don't think the smt sells in any big numbers. The more people that buy an 890 the more chance we get a 990. That said, it looks like there is a 1390 smt out later this year, so you never know...
Hi Carol, I have a 32 inch inside leg. I wouldn't say I struggle with the height of the seat, but the issue with this type of bike is how wide the seat is. Because it is wide, it makes it harder to get your feet down. I would say at 29 inch, you may struggle to even get your tip toes down. It would be a case of having to bum shuffle to one side each time you stop. This said, because it is a twist and go, there are no foot controls to worry about, so in that case, you may manage. It would also be possible to have the seat customized, (just remove some of the foam and make a new cover.) Probably the answer would be a test ride. Good luck with getting some thing 👍
@@ehiggins7476 I am looking forward to getting back over to the UK, where the roads are more suited to the SMT... so far, the weather has been so crap, I haven't bothered...
@@geecee4746just did a test ride on it, the bike is simply amazing. I was on the fence between the 890smt and the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+. Unfortunately where I live they don’t have the Tracer for test ride, so I think I’ll go for the KTM. Cheers
Since you de-catted it, have you noticed any loss of power at low RPM or jerking? I'm interested in de-catting my SMT but I'm not sure if the performance will be the same.
