Greetings to Reese Lourens.My name is Roberto I was a train driver at Mbilo Depot, I don't remember the year and the date which this video was taken but if my memory serve me well it was 2009,2010 or2011 when I came down with a goods train consist of tanks from Danskraal Ladysmith Kwazulu Natal to Durban, when I got to Mooiriver Station just at the middle of the station I saw two whites guys with cameras pointing to our train, after we passed, through the station they run to the car which was waiting and went to the following stations Nottingham station, Balgowan station, Lions River station, Cedara station PMB station and the last station was Cato Ridge station. I will be happy if you can show me that video please if you still got it.
When the driver made the coupling at 2:50 did he "stretch the joint" to ensure the coupler pins dropped? Do train crew persons get anything like "three-point protection" when they go between cars and/or engines to couple air brake hoses?
The 6E was the work horses of the old SAR.They never complained,just got on with whatever tasks were to be done.Thier distinctive sound will live with me forever.Its a pity they are not used so much today in South Africa.Enjoy your retirement.

In life you will get people who are unhappy in their job because of circumstances either beyond their control or their own choice. For some a job is just a job,not enjoying it. I might be wrong,but most of us in the comment section will be happy driving trains day in and out and wave to people. Me included. Trains are my happy place. Love it.❤️❤️
Interesting to see electrics and diesels (ones not too different from ours in the US) running together, and the multiple sets of distributed power! Do you call distributed power over there? We call it DPU in the US and I guess they are referred to as bankers in Australia and other parts of the world.
The 5E and the 6E were horrible units to work on, particularly as an assistant. The dreaded pantograph greased pole should the pantograph air take not have enough pressure to raise the pantograph, then one would need to raise the pantograph manually. The last 6E1 I worked on was E1525
The 7E and 7E1 used to run between Richards Bay and Vryheid doing longhaul coal. 2km long trains pulled by 6 x 7E locomotives. From Richards Bay Main line 2 x 37 000 class GM's or the 34 600 Class GM's would complete the last haul to the Richards Bay harbour. These were known as "trekker'. Good old days
Fills me with nostalgia. In the '70's I was a teacher in a railway village. Miss those days - I can still hear the sound of the diesel engines at night shunting in the yards
Thanks you so much for this video, and today i`m so far away from SENTRARAND ( 17000km ) in Azores my Country I`m retiered. Place were i work 23 years on 5Es 6Es 8Es 10E2 and 14Es but the 6Es where the most i rebuit so many HT frames. then i moved to the electronic room and I was on wheel slip section and a same time on reparing electronic PCBoards of the 10E2. End of the story I still missing SPORNET ( SENTRARAND ). God Blees South Africa.
The four resistance blowers do noy work at random!in both combinations ser and par they are activated when the throttle is opened from first notch to 19th full field in order to cool the prpgressive accell. Resistance banks.they cut out in weak field notch 20 to22.they run at idle during regen braking.when the throttle is moved forward again to reduce power and speed theblowers and resistorswill operate as inthe opening procedure.as we used to say ge korsten willagain start singing reen reen lieflike reen!
I don't know what South Africa is like now but when I visited in 1994 most people greeted me with what I thought then as an old fashioned politeness despite the economic inequality. I loved riding the trains. All those I rode were electric
