Sir, love your videos. Keep the great content coming! I own the Zildjian 400 snare and am considering ordering the DW True Cast bronze hoops. However, not sure if the DW True Cast bronze hoops will fit as the Zildjian 400 snare has a large outside diameter. Would you happen to know if this is possible?
sorry...but the pitch of each drum is tottay different... these snares are not tuned the same...so that's why you hear such a difference. If you can tune those 3 snares with something like tune boot and top and bottom skin than we can hear the difference. Now we hear difference in pitch....I mean you tuned one snare way lower than other. This video can not help people decide which snare sounds better to them :)
The new Rogers Powertone all-metal snare is now a steel shell, and the Super-Ten model is brass, whereas, the original Super-Ten was steel and the Powertone was brass.
I have this perception that cast shells have higher value because of the craftsmanship involved in making one. I mean sound-wise, both rolled and cast don't have a big difference. If there is, we'll have to factor in hardware and head selection. Having a cast shell feels more like you have a piece of art in your hand.
Nice sounding drums and great drumming! I’m partial to the Dynasonic because I own a 1973/4 Rogers that held up very well for its touring life with me and still helping me to do our thing. 😃
I have a Noble & Cooley 6x14 Alloy Classic and it has pretty much become my number one go to snare, relacing my Ludwig 402. I never thought any snare could replace the 402.
Sounds like a Ludwig head on the black beauty. (It also sounds like the snares can be a bit tighter on both). The Dyna Sonic sounded chunkier and a little boxxy. Depends on what you like. I personally prefer the chrome Supraphonic.
I have both in same exact sizes. I bought them several years ago. Copper is very focused, fantastic crack, dry woody tones. Brass is more open, not very focused, worse crack, more overtones, more juice.
I agree that the Super Ten held its own. I never even knew that the Super ten existed until recently. Sorry I never knew about it, I was very impressed.
It's nice not to hear somebody beat the crap out of a drum and play with some subtlety, but you're comparing apples vs oranges. Different sizes, different rims, different wires, etc. Plus, nobody that is buying these particular snare drums or any other cast bronze snare drums, are using them like you are in your videos. It's beating them like they owe you money!
thanks for putting in the effort, but the tuning is so off that it cannot be compared at all, especially not differentiating surface coating 🙁 you have an amazing collection and so many cool snare battles, but without syncing the fundamentals, its all really hard / impossible to compare. tension watch is just a rough starting point for matching them by ear in my opinion.
I'm not sure what you mean about surface coating? They both have the same heads? I'm not trying to tune them to the same note. I'm trying to show what note they generate at the same tension.
the fundamental produced is physically predominantly dependent on the head tension/mass and the shell dimension, not the material used for the shell. if the shells have equal dimension, I wouldnt trust your tension watch method to be accurate - if you think your head tension is correct and the heads are actually 100% equal mass, then maybe the shell dimensions differ! In the end what I would want in a comparison of shell material, is to actually hear the difference of shell material - I think that can only be heard at exactly equal tuning and giving it a little rimshot as well! at different tuning its impossible to tell whats shell and whats tuning. 🍻 either way, I really like your channel and your snare battles, will keep watching! 🤘🏻
Don't need to apologize for the sound. While processed audio from other channels does show how the snare will sound in a recorded setting (which still is important), The in-person sound of the drum also matters. It's what we all hear when we decide to purchase a drum among other choices we have in the market.
These are interesting videos, but even with your array of mics/mixer the sound is poor, cant you hear the bass drum maxxing out? Please take some time to work before this interesting series is lost. (and I am listening on decent speakers/and or headphones)
I've found that if I turn the bass drum down, it doesn't come through on cell phones at all. If I turn it up, it peaks on my studio monitors, but not my headphones. I appreciate your input, but so far I'm struggling to find a mix that works on the most common listening devices, especially without adding any effects. Since 80+ percent of RU-vid viewers watch on their cell phones, I went that direction.
All other youtube channels are basically love bombing the new bell brass so it's nice to see somebody giving an honest review. I'm amazed that the bell brass has sensitivity problems and it has extended wires! For $4000, that thing should do everything and the kitchen sink!
Love your collection. Been watching since back when you had less than 10 followers. Enjoying every video. I love the fact you don't process the sound and don't rim shot every hit. I can't currently play again till I have wrist surgery in July and significantly recover from that. Hence, I especially enjoy watching videos on YT during the interim. I don't think you've featured (I luckily own several of the drums you've featured) a drum yet that is less than great.
Please don't apologize for the recordings. This is exactly what I want to hear. FYI, I didn't hear the ringing in the Tama. imho, 2 perfect snare drums. You're reviews are driving me closer & closer to buying a Zildjian and this Tama (Looking at my old lady with an evil grin). (I have some BB's & Supra's, but love this Ludwig too). Actually like anything Ludwig/Tama/Gretsch 🤩
Love these videos! Thank you for posting. I have 5 Black Beauties. Cannot go wrong with any of them. Also, have 2 Joyful noise (thick bronze and thick brass) which are really fantastic. Appreciate your comparing the Terminator. Might have to get one based on your many excellent reviews!
