Lol, one of those foreigners who came here without doing proper homework. A quick google search from my end gave me a list of budget friendly food and drinks. For some reason, even though you didnt explicity mention it, you gave vibes that you expected Singapore to be as cheap as other SEA countries.
@gazwrighttravel
@gazwrighttravel 13 часов назад
I knew Singapore would be expensive before I came. Hence why I didn't say it would be similar to other SEA countries. Not sure how you got that vibe :) I live near London and have travelled to NYC and Scandanavian countries - I am well versed in 'expensive countries', but I thought Singapore was on another level. I do appreciate the feedback people have given that we only went to the super touristy place. But it was my first time in Singapore and we are tourists so wanted to go to the most popular places. I'm not sure how many of my videos you watched but I am severely allergic to all nuts, but mainly peanuts so I have to be really careful what and where I eat. So I often have to avoid street food and there was alot of satay sauce on the Singapore menu's in the hawker centres, where I pre researched had more 'affordable' food options. Where would you recommend we eat next time that is more budget friendly? :)

It is really easy to do some research. Google Maps offers a plethora of so-called "Hidden Gems" if you simply type in hawker food. You even know the food's affordability with the $$ sigh in there. Or you can CHATGPT this; it is all the rage these days. I never said $1.2 beer. I said, $1.2 Kopi (Coffee). Here in Singapore, you can get a very decent Noodle Dish eating out for just $4-5 bucks, depending on what you order. You can spend just $25-$50 on "Tze Char" ordering a Chicken Dish, Vegetable Dish, Egg Dish, 4 bowls of rice, 4 orders of drinks, teas, coffee, soft-drinks and such for a family of 4. I don't think you can do that in the UK or Australia. Maybe for 1 or 2 people, depending on what you order. Is Singapore more expensive than, say, Malaysia, Thailand, or Myanmar? Sure, of course, but Singapore offers much better infrastructure and safety ratings in street food. I would not say that Singapore is dirt cheap. It is definitely more expensive, but it is not as expensive as you put it. You visit all these tourist traps, and you complain about the prices? Of course, it is expensive; it is practically designed to fleece tourists. I mean, as a local, I steer clear of Raffles Hotel. Singapore Sling? Yuck!. Sands by the Bay? Come on.... Do some actual research. There are so many good places to go to that are not tourist traps, and the drinks very likely taste much better. If one or two people tell you that your research is terrible, maybe they are biased. But if you have a running trend in the comments section telling you that your research is terrible, it would be foolish to keep insisting that you are right. If you like to give "insights" at least give the insights that is true. If you want to do "Top Attractions"..... (Ewww. Why would you like to even do them.... its boring AF) Its like going to Japan in Kyoto and visit the Bamboo Forest in Arayashima at 10am then complain that ~ "oh its terrible because it is super crowded, it is not as peaceful looking as the pictures you see". But of course, these pictures were taken at 5-6am, not 10am, and these are tourist spots. And if you bother to ask the locals and do some research, there are actually MANY other "Bamboo forests" in secluded parts of Japan that are easily accessible. It is the same as Singapore. Ask the locals. Unlike 100 Years ago, we actually speak English. We are pretty friendly and would be more than happy to point you in the right direction. Or, you know, actually just type into Google Maps. We are only an "Island ~ that is 40km by 20km." It's really not that big. It just takes a little effort on your part. It's not much of an ask right?

I think in defence of Gardens by the Bay, the real highlight is the 2 conservatories, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, which require ticketed admission. You seem to have omitted that in your visit. Key Operative word here “Budget Traveller” But your destination includes Raffles Hotel, Gardens by the Bay, Haji Lanes etc, essentially all the tourist traps. Then in the very same vein you complain about how expensive it is… duh! Of course it is expensive! If you truly want to educate about budget travelling, why don’t you share about the hidden gems such as Tiong Bahru Market with famous foods such as the Wonton Mee. Jian Bo Shui Kieh. Maxwell Food Centre with that Tian Tian chicken rice or Adam Road Food Center with its Nasi Lemak. The list goes on and on. Please do your research, stop complaining about how expensive it is when you walk into a 5-Star hotel and expect a $1.2 kopi. At the very least, be logical in your assertion.

@@tommyfoo8417 thanks for the insight. I’m all for trying to go to hidden gems… but it’s finding them in the first place. We’re not budget travelling, but I always like to give some insight so if people want to do the ‘top attractions’ they have an idea of cost. Who wanted a $1.20 beer? I’ve seen loads of vlogs on Raffles and no one mentioned the price. Just how essential of a place to go it was. I did the same, but shared how much it’s going to set you back financially. @@gazwrighttravel10-15 years ago, you might be right. But in this day and age, the answers you seek are literally just 5min. Google Maps offer all these eateries that I mention. It even tells you how affordable it is with that $$ icons. And even, you don’t know about Google (which I highly doubt it), you can always ask Chat GPT. It’s all the rage these days. My point is, do alittle research. Just 5 min on your computer would give you plenty of information. Read through the comments section, if it is just 1 or 2 person telling you that your narrative is flawed or you have poor research, maybe it is bias. But if consistently you are hearing the same narrative from people who have lived here for decades. It would be foolish to insist that you are right. Is Singapores more expensive as compared to the likes of Malaysia and Thailand and all other South East Asian countries. Yes. But is as expensive as you described it to me. No. I would disagree with your characterisation. It is incredibly bias. Here, you can get a full meal at a food court for a noodle dish between $4-5 depending on what you order. You can get coffee that cost $1.7. Here you can take your family of four out for dinner for just $25-40. And the fare would be pretty decent. A chicken dish, egg fish and a vegetable dish with 4 bowls of rice. Compare that to Myanmar and with its exchange rates, of course it is exorbitant. Compare that to say Australia or UK, I highly doubt you can cover a full family meal at just $40. That is more like the price for 2 person only and it’s a one dish meal. If you want to create content to help travellers as you put it in your video, have the decency to do some rudimentary research. I think that is a very fair ask.

Singapore’s safety, cleanliness and convenience is tops in South East Asia. 99% of facilities and services work, standards and expectations vary. Easy if one speaks and reads English. Food variety is probably one of its best features, very easy to take it for granted. That’s about it. For those who love the heat and humidity, good for you. Born Sporean but never been a patriot. Hate the typical Sporean culture. Overly pragmatic and linear in mindset. Too mainstream and you’ll stand out if your orientation and lifestyle is different. (I’m not referring to one’s sexual preferences or fashion sense) Yes after you’ve seen every man made thang specifically designed to impress the tourist, you’ll be meh after that. Unless, you’ve never been to Asia. So SG is like Asia-light. Did you know, the Singapore Sling is only drunk by foreigners (especially white ones). Just ask the average Sporean on the street and chances are, 9/10 have never tried it. Possibly 5/10 even know about it. Last words: expensive and boring but easy to take the comforts and convenience for granted.

Singaporean here. Born here in 1962. So I am literally a dinosaur now. Is Singapore expensive - heck, yes - cars (US$100,000 for a basic Japanese car, US$400,000 for a small apartment, etc). But how did we survive? Basically, I work very very hard and I save save save. We cook our meals at home or eat at hawker centres. You can get a decent meal for US$3 and if you throw in a coffee, it is another US$1. A fish and chip meal in the hawker is about US$7. It is really affordable. I was in Iceland a few years ago. Fish and chip in a cafe cost US25 and if you go to a restaurant (which i did), it became US$40. So in summary, you can have a really enjoyable holiday here on the cheap and forget about those hotels' cocktails - it is simply not worth visiting. Please visit Singapore again and visit the hawkers - I highly recommend Chinatown Complex and Maxwell. If you venture out, you can try Zion Road Hawker (at Great World City MRT). You won't be disappointed.

@@ragsoh Hey, thanks for the message and all the info. I really appreciate it. We went to the food centre in Chinatown and it looked amazing. I couldn’t eat there as I am severely allergic to nuts/ peanuts and there was lots of satay. It’s 100% where you can save abit of money and have some really tasty food (from what I saw). Yeah I went to iceland last year and it’s crazy isn’t it. What were your favourite things your did in Iceland?

@ragsoh 3 дня назад
@@gazwrighttravel I am a pescatarian (I only eat seafood). Maybe a safe bet would be chicken rice and noodles for you. And fish dishes like fish soup, fried fish are generally nut free. May I suggest you use Google translate to ask the hawkers if their food has nuts in them. For Iceland, my favourite thing was driving around the amazing country. The food was very expensive but it was a trip of a lifetime - so i just splurged.

@@ragsoh thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. If satay sauce (peanuts) is on the menu I usually avoid it in case there is cross contamination. The food in Asia as a whole has been amazing, but I know I’m missing out on lots of the good stuff with my nut allergy. I have severely different food vlogs on my channel in Europe, London, South Korea so if you enjoy your food maybe check those out and welcome to the team 🤝

I think we r not ready for u in Asia. Everything has peanuts in it. Please don't get sick! I don't even know a single person with peanut allergy. Eg of food with peanuts, rojak spring rolls pie tee n alternative bf is peanut butter toast! Also pastries n other desserts.

From your videos, you seem like one who loves the sun, sand and sea. Why visit SG in the first place? It’s clearly not for you. Plus you visited when the country was experiencing a terrible heat wave!

As a singaporean. Singapore is one of the most overrated country or city. Everything is so expensive. Petrol, transportation, cars, food, alcohols, cigaretes, hotels, houses, groceries. They basically suck everything that we earn per month left us with totally no savings at all. Ridiculous place.

@@gazwrighttravel yes here the only good thing is that its safe. As singapore doesnt has natural resources everything has to be imported. That explain the high cost but recently the cost is getting way too high. I do love to travel. I prefer countries like thailand, malaysia, japan etc.
