In 2020, I graduated from the University of Oxford with a MSt in Film Aesthetics, and I also hold a BA(Hons) in Film Studies from the University of New South Wales, which is located in Sydney, Australia.
I originally launched this RU-vid channel under the moniker Cinema Scholar, and founded a corresponding website, with the intention to make videos and articles dedicated to the study of cinema.
Now, I’m still making videos and writing articles on cinema, but with a scope that extends beyond the strictly academic.

Hello Zachary, I want to know if I can use some glimpse of your video for making a documentary about a video game made in Italy. You will be obviously credited. Thanks ^^
I'm here in 2024 bc I'm interested in film preservation. I'm 40 and only have a G.E.D. My fear tells me I'm not good enough, I'm not smart enough, I'm not rich enough. Also that I'm too old. But my heart tells me that old films are my passion and I'd love nothing more than to do my part in saving them. Here's hoping I get to achieve my dream career. God bless 🙌
This was an amazing analysis thank you. I have a question - how does the aesthetic personality (i.e. Jesse) go about adopting an ethical personality? Should they even do so, or would that result in resentment so instead they should go about life embracing that aesthetic immediacy without the pressures of familial life?
thinking of taking creative writing or film study for this spring. I'm already taking 211 writing so I don't think I wanna deal with anymore writing and film studies seems fun. I already have background in creating videos as self taught so I think this could help with that. We will see
Regarding your claim about "the partial visualization of HAL: Hyper-acousmatization" in the end, 'I suggest looking at 'acousmachine' in his book The Voice in Cinema page 42.
rich in depth analysis and well cited. Impressive video. I am becoming a big fan of Benning as I became interested in his work last year in my freshmen year in film school. One film i recommend for anyone who lives in the united states is James Benning - the United States of America(2021). That was the first film i got into. To quote your video which will be the amazing way I will explain why anyone and why I enjoy Benning's work-- "The sheer length of each shot presents an exercise in perception. The closer you pay attention, the more information you will glean. This is a vital dimension of benning's films and a way in which he strives to challenge his viewers ways of looking and listening. Once this challenge has been accepted and met halfway and an endlessly enriching viewing experience soon follows !!!!"
Hey Zach, i’m an undergraduate from the US majoring in film studies and my school has a partnership with Oxford where it may be possible for me to receive my masters upon graduating. If possible, would you be able to have a short conversation about your time in the program?
Thanks for video, but I can't help being the one to point out that you are pronouncing it wrong, over an over, it's Cine Città, and that accent is there for a reason. Blimey!
James Dean 1955 - Porsche spyder 550 - he wa stopped for speeding in a 55 mph limit, he was been Followed by a 1955 Ford County Squire Station wagon pulling a trailer ! Also just watched RU-vid video - James Dean's Spyder...Found? SEE 22 seconds says Serial number of car 550-0055-
hi, found this really interesting, and showed it to film students which was a great help in them grasping the topic, however, the background changing colors is very distracting and hard to watch
I wanna say, this is amazing! im trying to reorient into cinema and this video (and your blog) have such a simple and organic way that makes me hopeful! please keep going:)
One thing I noticed about Jesse is that he is quietly controlling and passive aggressive. That’s why Celine eventually finds him unbearable by the third movie. I think you captured that very well in this analysis.
