My name is Crystal and I've been painting flowers in watercolour since September 2020 during the first covid lock down in Melbourne and haven't stopped since. I am also a yoga teacher, 'Steiner mum' to 2 beautiful school aged boys, and wife to a urban farmer, living in the beautiful Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia. I was born and raised in Singapore, and my ancestors were originally from China. So I guess you can call me a twice over immigrant child.
Painting has connected me deeper to myself, and to the subject I am painting. With every flower I paint, I am paying homage to its beauty, its creation, it's colours, shapes and curves.
This channel is dedicated to documenting that trance-like journey as I paint with the magical medium of watercolour, and of nature's most expressive beautiful subjects. Flowers. And sharing along with you, the techniques, tips and spaces that I flow into whilst painting.
you are on my short list of artists I look to for inspiration and beautiful tutorials. Love your interpretations from art books and will be purchasing Petal so that I can follow along with your videos. Thanks for all the beauty.
Beautiful! Hello from Oregon, USA, on Eastside of Cascade Mountains. Our Iris blooms ended almost 2 months ago. I had a lot of them. Hated to see them go. Blessings and thanks for sharing.
@@crystaltanart love the fuzzy little yellow beard in the throat of the Iris . A friend of mine, who owned a hugh Iris farm, now deceiced, created several Iris Highbreds and won award's. He also had many non bearded Iris's. No beard at all.
Thank you for your post Crystal - I am still looking for the perfect sketchbook myself, so this was helpful. I have some W&N and a Canson one of the way, so it will be interesting what I think! Not sure if you are aware, but Jackson Art have opened a store in Australia - in Adelaide - so you can buy products from them locally online. Also you mentioned about the colours not looking as sharp, I think in the Etcher - now, this is my first post of yours I have watched, so you probably already know this - but you may prefer working on hot press watercolour paper - it is great for botanical art and fine detail - and apparently the colours look brighter. I look forward to watching more of your posts. Happy painting!
Oh my thanks for the Jackson Art in Adelaide info! I had no idea :) And as for the Etchrlab - It hasn't even occured to me to try the hotpress. Because usually I like cold press. But I may give it a go! Thank u!
Love your leaves! Your hand covers the motions you are using to make some of the leaves. there is no way to see if you are twisting the brush to one side or the other at times.
I got the Stillman and Birn, the Beta and the Zeta, they are both great. One is white and the other is a little off white. I love the sizes and you can take them anywhere and the watercolor dries faster so you can move on to the next page. But, the paper seems better than other non-cotton papers. Great review. :) thank you! 🙏
Wonderful! Interestingly it never crossed my mind to paint from books until I saw your videos. 😀 Thanks for the inspiration! I just ordered a few from a book outlet here in Canada. You do beautiful work.
Wow! It looks so beautiful and yet so simple and filled with childish wonder! It reminds me of when I drew with my crayons as a child, only much more beautiful and purposeful lol
