The Japanese didn't regard the Okinawans as human. Okinawa was a later addition to the Japanese Empire, having held out independently until the 19th Century. There was and still is discrimination against Okinawans in Japan. That's why using civilians as human shields and bombers was seen as a perfectly legitimate tactic by the Japanese military. During this time the Japanese were preparing for the final defense of the main islands of Japan beyond Okinawa. 100 million die together was the slogan. That meant every man, woman, and child was expected to die fighting.
@jmwilliamsart
@jmwilliamsart 15 часов назад
Do the Japanese have no compassion or humanity for others even now or was that just how they were was back then? Why were they so obsessed with honor (death before dishonor) back then? Please tell me that the Japanese signed the Geneva convention after they lost the war, and that they will never treat prisoners and civilians horribly (like they did in the 2nd World War) should they ever enter into another conflict?
@place_there9104
@place_there9104 14 часов назад
@@jmwilliamsart The Japanese today are very different from the Japanese of WWII. During that time they were indoctrinated with extreme nationalist and racist dogma. During the Russo-Japanese War at the start of the 20th Century, European observers were highly impressed by the great humanity with which the Japanese military treated their Russian prisoners of war. That changed drastically in the 1930s after extreme nationalist and racist ideas were put into the education system.
@jmwilliamsart
@jmwilliamsart 14 часов назад
@@place_there9104Why was this extreme racist dogma introduced into the education system back then? I think that the trend actually began in the 1920s due to social and economic difficulties that Japan had been experiencing at the time.

I was a mortarman like Eugene and haveing wet charges on a mortar round is extremely bad because it leads to misfires just like you saw in that episode. Handling misfires is extremely dangerous entire gun teams have died dealing with them before even in training because they can explode in the mortar tube. In the infantry we have a saying. "Weapon, Gear, Body" because you have to take care of things in that order. you can handle discomfort but you can't let your weapon or gear fail it's life or death.

Another great reaction, Amy. This episode was just heartbreaking in so many ways. It's one thing to learn about history, but to get a glimpse of what these men actually went through really drives home the horrors suffered by all involved in war, whether they were combatants or innocent civilians.

Great reaction! The Japanese IJN were absolutely brutal during WWII and killed over 31 million civilians during their occupation of Asia. They HATED Okinawans and look at them as sub human. They commonly used them as human shields, and actually convinced 8,000 civilians to throw their babies off of cliffs for fear of the Americans. The Japanese do not teach this in their schools today, but historians rank them as the most evil empire in history.

I was depressed in 2009 to read this book from Cormac McCarty. But now i think it is a path to do it better. Only to put your head in the sand brings you to what... At the same time i was at the university, studiying about humanity visiting Buchenwald and Auschwitz. By all depression there is HOPE . Immanuel Kant an old philosoph had four questions. What can I know? What I ought to do? What I may hope for? What is man or humanity? My answer is to care for myself and any sort of beeings.

If you had a little more wrap up and comments at the end it might be better, but there are a lot of reactors with big channels and many thousands of reviews that don't do the quality that you are doing. God bless.

Thank you for watching this series. This episode really hits me hard also for two reasons. First I met my wife while going to my Navy "A" school in Millington, she is a Marine. The second is my Dad was a Navy Pharmacist Mate (actually called a Corpsman when attached with Marines, now they are all Corpsman, the equivalent of an Army Medic) with the 3rd Marines in the Battle of Okinawa (you will see the Battle of Okinawa in the last two episodes).

Thank you for watching this series, and nothing you have said has been offensive. I've watched it several times, and this and the next are the two hardest episodes for me. I'm a retired Marine (76-96) and learned about John Basilone from boot camp on. He is one of the biggest of quite a few heroes in Marine Corps history. The two main roads at the base at Camp Pendleton are named after him and General Vandegrift. Lena lived another 54 years, but she never remarried. I just have to remember that their story was one of hundreds of thousands of similar ones in the U.S., and many more in other countries, during that war. This was one of the most poignant, though. Again, thank you.

This episode broke my heart, even though I already knew the story of John Basilone. This series can be gut-wrenching, especially knowing that it's not fiction. I have the utmost respect for our greatest generation, and it's apparent in your reactions that you do, too. You are definitely not offensive, young lady, so pay no attention to the geek squad at RU-vid. Two more to go. Hang in there; it'll be worth it.

John, at least in this depiction, was acting like he needed to prove something. Just like he told his brother not to do. Obviously, this man had nothing to prove. None of these men did. A great generation. Lovely reactions. All the best to you.

My hat is off to you for watching these. It's gut wrenching to watch others sacrifice their lives and health and suffer in the most horrific ways, to make right, what others have made wrong - but this has been an eternal truth played out over and over again throughout the ages.

Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet. Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests. The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds" Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion. Memory - Self explanatory The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs. Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that. Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

Quite the opposite of a feel-good movie. She ventured way beyond the point of redemption when executing a man who just wanted to help her. The typical rationale being that responsibility is diminished for those who suffered evil themselves, but my perspective is that not all these people turn out bad, And this is the true test of life and one's character. If you are truly a good person, you overcome it, Aileen did not.

It's not just a level of surrealism, but a level of "What on earth are these people doing here? They're too clean to have had to do what it takes to live...so they're a liability. They're going to get themselves killed, and they're going to get us killed too because they don't know how to survive out here."
