We wanted to visit Kifune when we were in Kyoto in early October, only to find out the lighting up ceremony was in November. Now we know it is still just very beautiful and worth the visit anyways, thanks!
I recommend trying 流しそうめん at the Kifune Shrine in summer. You can enjoy it by the river in beautiful nature. Even though it's hot, it's chilly up there. Give it a try before the awesome autumn season!!!!!!!!
As those familiar with the Japanese language may know, the Japanese have long used many expressions comparing green natural objects to the color blue. For example, "lush green meadows" is a word that directly refers to the color green. However, the literal translation in Japanese would be "lush blue meadows. The same logic applies to the Japanese phrase "green vegetables," which is directly translated into English as "blue vegetables. It is said that the green color of Japanese traffic signals is so close to the natural color of "green vegetables" that the Japanese did not feel any resistance to calling it "blue.
It's tough balancing wanting to travel to Japan and being afraid to contribute to the 'over-tourism' problem. I'm going in August and are there any regions you recommend that wouldn't contribute to the issue?
Hi there, honestly anywhere north of Tokyo and south/west of Osaka is still pretty -underexplored. I don’t know Tokyo very well, but Osaka (apart from Dotonbori region) is so fun in my opinion. Kyoto is where you might feel a bit overwhelmed imo. It’s beautiful and popular for a reason, so I would recommend exploring in the mornings and on weekdays for a more pleasant experience 🙂 Overtourism is definitely in part an infrastructure issue so as long as you’re respectful and considerate (which sounds like you are!) I think you’ll be welcomed and have a great time 🙂
I'm impressed the way Japanese drivers can back into a narrow space. But handbrake turn ... no way. Bit shakey at judging the width of their vehicle or getting the headlights on in a tunnel and fog.
