Awesome report buddy. Contrats on the inspiring ride, and awesome bike tech report!

The wheel depth doesn't need wind tunnel test. The turbulence of the spokes themselves slow down the wheel.

Coming back to rewatch this video after Fox has just released the Live Valve Neo wireless rear shock (it uses sensors to lock out automatically as you ride). It costs upwards of £1.5k atm :O

I think John Tomac has everyone beat on the drop bar mountain bike concept circa 1991 or so

I can imagine their mechanic believing it is a good lube. Talking with our own mechanics in the shop they don't know anything about newer techs in cycling, only singing the oldguy bs. I find their advice not relatable in other fields than repairability, they don't care about anything else.

Hmmm good vid Bro!! Yeah a very interesting and pretty good way to set up your bike. So like I have a Cervelo R3 for road bike, specialized diverge for gravel and looking at a Cervelo mtn bike now to complete my bike collection. I think your setup is smart and gave you the great finish you had at Unbound.

Key thing he forgot to mention is that with longer cranks you accelerate slightly quicker compared to short ones. It's like an engine with a bigger con-rod length so more torque at the lower rev range.

A key for me that I want to add that made it SO much easier (my BMI is now 19). Was to not allow any "treats" of HD food. I went cold turkey on them. They are so addictive. I make all my own food. Smoothies, curries. Energy levels are better than ever. I also happen to be on a very low fat vegan diet. Somewhat like the Tarahumara tribe (they do eat TINY amounts of meat though). When I went to that it seemed easier still to lose weight. I seriously never get hungry and have to make a point to eat more when training. I use spices to flavour the food, not oils. I take omega 3 marine based supplement and eat 3 walnut halves a day - which is my only fatty food intake. No other nuts, seed or added oils. Go told turkey guys - after a while all the cravings for those addictive HD foods - goes away. Sometimes very occasionally I may get a mild temptation for such a snack but I have already worked out in advance that I will not do that, not worth it. It's usually when not had much sleep that I get such occasional temptations, so I make sure to get enough. Nap if needed in the day.

Super light XC race bikes are basically the best gravel bikes, and of course adding drop bars makes them more aero. Once bike companies (and XC race teams) start implementing more aero tech on their XC bikes, then gravel bikes will become completely irrelevant.

I love my flat pedals for everyday bike rides. However, I put my clipless ones when I know I am going to be ascending a lot on a particular ride. I don't know if I am being superstitious about it but I really think it helps when climbing and somewhat easier to control the bike when descending. I just kinda dont like walking around on shoes with cleats.

Interesting. I wonder why you yourself declare your bike ugly, I think it has beauty in it. I'm riding a 28" "Crossbike" (not Cyclo-cross!) from 2005 as a touring bike, it's more like a proto-29"-MTB with a bit of trekking bike in the mix, but more sporty. For some time I had a drop bar on it, if I had kept the suspension fork it came with as well I'd have had something like your concept, I guess - just in another wheel size. Anyway you can do whatever your creative mind allows you with your bike(s) to achieve your goal of speed - and unconventional constructions are great to test things and push the limits!

On the wind resistance of the front spring. My guess is , that because the wind is already seperated the extra material doesn't realy matter. And since the distance between te spring and all that comes behind it keeps the air more turbulent and the negative pressure lower, the resistance of all that comes later is lower. Its most of the time the negaitve pressure behind the object that is holding you down. Reduce the ratio between the positive pressure at the front and the negative pressure at the back. That is why a wing is dropped shaped. To reduce the nagative pressure at the back.

It would be interesting to see a Surly Ogre or something equivalent with 29x2.5 tires with a 80mm suspension seat post and suspension stem on drop bars doing this since suspension stems and seat posts are significantly more efficient than suspension rear triangles and forks.
