Hello Dear Cate, thank you for this super tutorial. It will help me so much and I love the idea of getting a second hand canvas. Such a great tip! In the future I would love to exhibit some of my work (now I've typed that I can feel the fear arising😆😊) so would appreciate any tips in that regard. 😘
I look forward to the Friday Art. I’ve got a busy day today it’s the Day after Independence Day here so lots of people are taking a 4 day weekend. My son is part of the Emergency Response Team here in US and is preparing for which ever this Hurricane Beryl decides to do. Happy Friday Cate.
Wow… that sounds scary, I hope it’s all ok. Sending love to you all over the pond. I hope the Independence Day celebrations were good though… over here, we’re still recovering from the general election! 😊🙏
Paint brush in the coffee!😄I FINALLY realized that by putting my water in a glass jar I don't make that mistake anymore! I don't want to admit how many cups of coffee I ruined before I figured that out!
I live in Florida in the USA and I love it here, I spend most of my time crafting or arting when I am not watching shows on RU-vid, I make books and shirts and home decor and I do art journaling, water coloring, acrylic painting, and many other things, my brain is overfilled!! 😂
I have recently subscribed when I caught one of your videos, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoy your company!! I am recently trying to teach at a resort, and have never done any teaching before…..not actual, anyway your videos are helping me to grow in this way as well!! But it’s your sweet personality that draws me in the most!! You are a WONDERFUL teacher, and a BEAUTIFUL soul!! Thank you so much for sharing your time!
Really enjoyed watching this and it has inspired me to start trying to do something similar. Perhaps from my overgrown garden which I am returning to tomorrow after 4weeks away. Thank you for making these wonderful videos.
Really wish I'd had an art teacher like you when I was at school!! I'm sure so many people are put off trying art and crafts following negative childhood experiences. Thank you for such fun lessons 🤗
I love creating nature gel prints and as a result I have huge pile of prints to choose from for my mix media artwork. I also use my inkpads and embossing machine Big Shot to create prints. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely prints Cate. I just finished a printing session for the gel print postcard challenge for July. So much fun, you never know what you’re going to get, like a “box of chocolates”! 😊
That poem by Emily Dickenson is my favorite above all others. I recite it to myself when I need encouragement. It was so nice to see it in your sketchbook!
Some really beautiful gel prints Cate. I'd want to keep them all for future collages.....but then of course you end up with a massive pile of papers that become too precious to do anything with! So the idea of glueing them into a book and writing poetry or quotes over them is lovely to make a precious little personal book.
Thank you :) You're absolutely right.. I often want to use them all in some grand project... but a long time ago, I realised I could enjoy may of them much more if they were carefully placed in a journal or sketchbook! Thank you for watching. x
What a marvelous teacher you are. Your little 5 year olds and any children you teach are so lucky and I’m certain they adore you. Thank you very much for this wonderful tutorial.
Thank you Cate for these directions, I’ve been wanting to make these, but haven’t as yet. I wanted to share an idea in mark making. My daughter is a talented quilter. On her machine are many different stitches she can use in-her quilting that we could also incorporate in our mark making on our paintings. Also embroidery has many unique stitches. Happy painting.
I’m loving all of your ideas and thinking about other things I could use to embellish these such as fabric and beads. I was wondering though how you would present these since they are not framed. It seems like a little frame would be great but then you’ve got expense with that.
Presentation is important, but doesn’t have to be expensive. With these little pieces, I place them in a cellophane pocket and tissue paper. People can then choose their own mount and frame. Thank you for your interesting comment.. 😊🙏
Your video came just at the right time - I ordered a mini-palette in a small tin for 12 colours for my bff who is a fan of tiny things. I'll make a mini concertina watercolour sketchbook to go with it. Thank you for sharing this great idea 🥰
Very inspiring. I loved what you said about making mistakes. Also just start! I recently found you and am so glad I did. What brand glue stick are you using? Beth B in Sarasota, Florida
I love making these little books Cate, they can be quite addictive! It's so silly how fear can hold you back, even from doing a little collage in a book made with scrap paper. It can become precious and that's when you get stuck, very silly but very true! These little books can be a great way of practising in a small, quite private way. But I do also love the idea of sending them instead of a birthday card x
I just painted my girst real abstract on canvas and it was soooo hard!!! I kept getting to a place that was almost there, then id try and add something, then id ruin it and have to go for another couple of hours fixing it! Its taken me 3 days now😂 i thut i knew what to do but realised i didnt! My background came together easily but yhe foreground was agony to get right . I really thut i was ready to do a canvas but im clearly not 😢 shud i do shapes, blurred shapes, go in one direction or many?! I totally started overthinking it but i keep thinking if i dont , itll be a disaster. I guess its my first one so i shouldnt worry so much! But u want it to look good, thats very hard feeling to overcome! I like this idea u are saying of cutting up shapes first. I did have a thumbnail but transferring that to a large canvas was much harder than i thut. Next time im going to try this pencil and making shapes idea, it cud be just what i need!! And try a smaller canvas lol!Thank u Cate!!
Oh dear! It’s not easy sometimes, but wow, you are getting there! I think you maybe overthinking, which is normal for so many of us. I’m sure lots of people can relate to this. 🥰 I suggest that you spend a bit more time time in developing an idea before moving to a canvas. Try the shapes/blurred shapes on a small scale and see what you like. Developing a piece is really important.. the temptation to dive straight into a canvas is strong.. I know! I’ve done this many time.. I’m thinking of creating a tutorial on developing an idea.. thank you for your comment, and keep going 🥰
You are such an inspiration! You are a great teacher, and I am learning so much from you! Thanks! 100 deg Fahrenheit or 29 deg celsius, muggy and very sunny today in South Jersey, USA
I guessed lilac and grey, how about beige? Very exciting designs, especially the 3-D and the yellow/black with its endless permutations. I'd be very interested in a tutorial about 4 point perspective but I think it could be very complicated!
