I just came across your video and actually justification and decision to get a combo and this particular model was the same for me.. just yesterday I purchased a brand new bernette 48 Funlock. I am from Ontario and I paid 1150 CAD. For about two months I was researching combos, and decided to go with Singer professional 5. Almost purchased it from US site for 475 USD, it would be around 880 CAD total cost, including import tax and HST. BUT, read more reviews, called few stores and came across the the place I purchased my machine from. The rep explained me the differences between Sin and Ber, and I decided to add a few $$ and upgrade to Bernina. I should get it this week and will see if I made a good decision. I started using a serger only 2 months ago - very simple Singer, that I borrowed. I fell in love with serging. I am also new to sewing. I bought my first sewing machine 4 months ago, But I enjoy it. I agree that you have to have personality to sew, need to practice and be patient. I sew for fun, and already accomplishes a few things I am happy with. Thanks for your video - glad that I am not the only one who's decision making in this case was the same.
This is a great video. So very helpful both in sewing and how to approach a changing body in a positive way. I am wanting to make this as a peplum with the plan to then make a dress once I iron out the kinks. I love your finished top and it looks great on you!
Thank you, Megan. I know this video is 2 year old, but it's still so relevant. No where else did I find such a complete explanation of the combo or not to combo. After watching your video, I realize that I'm in the latter category.
this video was really helpful! i have to chose between an overlocker and a combo, and i too am scared to chose the combo because of all the negative stuff i've heard! but apparently, it's all not even that bad. it would be so cool to be able to do coverstitches!
I bought the Babylock evolve many years ago. I finally overcame my fear of breaking it! It stayed in its carry bag for many years. Finally, I put on my video instructions and opened my manual. I got the gist of it and gave the machine a go. Wow. It was so easy! It cost Aus$3600 in 2004. I understand the expensive price aspect. I couldn’t afford one today! The best thing about air threading is the simplicity. It does make it doable. My other serger I bought after a friend bought one at a deceased estate sale. That is a Bernina 800D it’s a great machine and easy to thread. If I’m set up for Coverstitching on my Evolve, I use my Bernina for serging. I still need to practise.
Hi Megan. I think you made a great choice! I looked into the Janome CP3000 and as nice as it looked, it has no blade! Very odd for the serger function. So since I am in my 60's, I thought to get the Bernette 68. Like yours but with airthreading. The best brand, Bernina L890 has a side dial to close or open the blade & moves the foot sideways for ease as well as it's computerized. It costs a small fortune. Three times the Bernette & Quiet. Lots of pluses for the price. A sewing mat helps ease the noise. So far I just drool! All the accessory feet cost much too.
Thanks for the review! I've been contemplating getting one or the other, but this combo has been in my mental wishlist for the last year or sew (bah dum ching!) lol ✨ I'm still mulling it over, but the space-saving is def a plus!!!
The fact that it does not have a free arm makes it a lot less practical, I think. It makes doing everything harder. Sewing in an arm hole or re-heming pant legs. I think this is more for dress making or something what do you think mamm?
I think you mean combination “cover stitch/overlocker” machines. Cover stitch machines AND Overlockers are BOTH sergers. I.e. there are two types of sergers: 1 Cover stitch machines 2 Overlockers. Sergers are a ‘category’ of machine which has two different sub categories.
💕 It was so fantastic to meet you at Frocktails. Thank you so much for coming! Your dress was beautiful and it looked lovely on you. Hope you’re able to fit in some sewing and maybe a Meetup and we can connect again. 💕
So lovely to see you back! The beautiful of subscribing and being notified! I really hope the new job is going well! Frocktails sounded amazing! And your dress was stunning. The jacket you’re wearing is really great! The print is 😍 Don’t apologise for taking a break! But it is lovely to see you back
Thank you so much for popping back on! Boy, can I relate to the pressures of job, family, and how to squeeze in the creative pursuits that we love!! Hope you can continue to pop on from time and time--and of course life changes as our kiddos grow and the rhythms of work change; this is a lifelong pursuit, and just know that you are a gift to this community at whatever stage you can join!
Always great to hear from you, Megan! Your dress is stunning. I understand why you love it. The jacket is really cool and elevated. Great to have things that you can wear for work and still feel like yourself. I'm happy to hear that you had a good time at Frocktails. Sewing people are the best!
Great to see you again on here! I have never sewn the upton but own the pattern. That's awesome you didn't have to do the zipper. I have never done an invisible zipper so that is good to know.
What a nice surprise to see your video today! That jacket is absolutely adorbs; I would never have thought to make it in that fabric and yet it is 💯!!! So glad you had such a wonderful time at Frocktails. Sometimes we just need more fun but when kids are little and jobs are demanding, it's hard to fit it all in! Post when you can but no pressure; it's always lovely to see you!
So so lovely to see you Megan, have thought of you often in the last year (gasp) and glad all is well. Hoping you can find a new rhythm as I love your vlogs - always so inspiring. Wishing you well.
Right now I'm teaching some sewing classes but I've run a lot of training sessions related to doing media interviews and crisis communications. Thanks for watching!
So glad to see you back! I have missed seeing your videos. Your makes are beautiful and I look forward to see your upcoming projects. I live in NB and really don't have anyone that shares my desire to make clothing. It is great that we are able to have this lovely on line community. Take care and hope to see more videos soon when you are able, no pressure.
So nice to see you again on RU-vid! I love your jacket, it looks so sophisticated :) And your dress is beautiful. Congrats on your new gig, it sounds amazing.
