really need some type of robust supervisory hierarchy for the agents though...it's already frightening when a simple python math agent starts hallucinating when struggling to figure out how to process a calculation. Last thing we need is that cascading descent into madness to occur in a nuclear facility for instance. Yann LeCun says we have little to worry about from LLMs with the intelligence of a house cat. Well, I'm not tasking my cat with arranging my emails, let alone driving my car or running a power station. p(doom) is always going to arrive via a f-up, even at the house cat level, not any planned super-intelligence. @JamesMccorn
@JamesMccorn 4 месяца назад
You did hit on the crux of my point. It is self-centered, i.e., what gives you meaning is what you choose to be meaningful to yourself. No longer is someone else telling you what is meaningful or what has value, as you will be liberated from that. Self-centered, egoistic people are not bad if the incentives guide them to focus on legacy, community cooperation, and multi-generational thinking rather than on short-term thinking. I try to avoid socialism, as individual people will determine where to spend their Universal Generous Income, not the government. This would be, by definition, Not Socialism.

I myself missed out on the last gold rush... the 2000 bug. A decade prior I ALMOST took a college loan out to go "into tech" the junior college path. I went to class the first day, got told to insert a COBOL floppy.... and left during lunch. I should have stayed. I would have made a few bucks ten years later for a few months of hype and then get dumped for Javascripters... Instead I took the path of self taught systems engineering, spending years learning "not to program"... best way to learn core programming philosophy , what most "programmer mill graduates" lack. I still don't consider myself a "programmer", so you don't' make me write it. (but I will tell you in good enough pseudo code to codify in any language or write a publishable paper on the subject). Everything else is just a "hover over code read" away. Never believe the hype. Nothing has broken yet... programmers will be more important than ever... but chose your own path... the media is always a few years/months behind. The generalists will succeed going forward. Abstractions, not specialties will bestow value... Most programmers will flourish after the red tide washes away... "coders" may not fare so well.

I work as a senior infrastructure and operations engineer for one of the largest healthcare companies with the highest technical access working with multiple departments in projects and upgrades. The only jobs being replaced by AI "at this time" are the mindless, boring, repetitive jobs and even those will take at least another year to complete due to price quotes from different vendors, budget approvals, proof of concept, security reviews, developer testing, user testing, security testing and then acquiring approval from many top managers for an actual go live date. Anyone doing mindless, boring or repetitive jobs should be happy for the opportunity of finding work doing something rewarding. It's very simple to remain employed within a company... make yourself valuable to the company. For example IBM tried to have me laid off simply because I negotiated a higher salary than my co-workers... and within 2 months they were begging for me to return because their clients were demanding for me to be rehired.

So what jobs in tech are being replaced by ai? From what I hear on the news and from people I know who work for these companies (google, Microsoft etc) the majority that got laid off were non technical roles that are over paid and only work 2-3 hours a day. Maybe some got AI’d out but I suspect it has more to do with the hyper growth tech experienced during Covid and now needs to shrink due to shareholders. I agree ai “will” affect most tech jobs, but presently ai is too much in its infancy stage to do what a well seasoned software engineer can do.
