I don’t see how there is any context where sjw and cuck can be used in Hajimete no gal or patriarchy in dragon maid. If people genuinely think that’s what localization is all about they’re on a different planet. People can say shit like speed racer is shit for changing names but hey he can still kill a ton of people with little to no censorship star blazers can still keep the wave motion gun and ships being fired at and all the original music and opening dubbed. People like to say lots of older dubs are shit when in reality I can sense more respect for the source material than most modern dubs. Granted most of that has to do with age people who dubbed those shows are boomers and weren’t failed theatre actors searching for anything else, hell you can say for stuff like the sailor moon dubs it was almost entirely dominated by actual Canadian voice actors granted the viz dub does a pretty good job of getting voice actors who do more then just anime. Yet they can still be called crap because of name changes? And you know not changing actual context. It’s too far gone at this point gekiga manga are really the only place where actual professional translators have migrated to. I’m not gonna keep watching these shows if the same 30 people are used in everything or I can’t even trust them to localize dialouge right. That’s the issue I have. At least with companies like geneon and Bandai when they released stuff I could trust the cast would fit, and hell the dub would yknow be actually translated right. Actual translators aren’t going away there’s too much nuance in text. But if AI can be used as a tool to get more nuanced sentences, and ward out bias towards the work I’m fine with it Robert woodhead flat out admits he does that now. There’s also the issue of typecasting which doesn’t deny it doesn’t happen it does, how many times have you heard rial or marchi or grelle in a harem? Or just bias preventing licenses like Justin sevakis flat out admiting he won’t license MD Geist because the place he worked at had someone who liked it and compared it to working on scat hentai (which he actually did it’s very weird) idk man there’s just a sort of bias that needs to be completely weeded out. It really only started notice after ghost stories showed they could get away with it. Those are my thoughts
This was my show to watch on kids WB. 9 year old me with access to ebay on the family desktop computer bought all of the DVDs of the original japanese version, i remember popping them in and being shocked it was in japanese not realizing what a dub was at 9. Anyway i gave it a chance and of course fell in love with the original. I would draw my own posters with crayon and hang it in my bedroom... and decorate school notebooks. Cardcaptor Sakura was MY jam. I have the clow circle tattooed on my back. As bad as the dub is, simething about Sakuras dubbed voice really brings me comfort, for 9 year old friendless me, thats all i had.
I love the original Canadian English dub from the 90s the newer one tries way too hard to copy the Japanese version and it does not translate well to English making it sound insincere and baby like
I generally only watch dub for the simple fact that I'm often dozing off or cooking breakfast when I have time to watch and I don't want to have to keep pausing and rewinding to read the subtitles. That said, I do get that some dubs are particularly horrible due to the small pool of VA's, the things that get lost in translation or the GOD AWFUL WESTERNIZATION like "jelly donuts". Still, there are a handful of shows that I think have fantastic dubs: Cowboy Beebop Samurai Champloo FLCL xxxHolic Ghost In the Shell Black Clover Fairy Tale Black Butler Gambling High School Death Parade Durarara!! Claymore NGNL Trigun (the adaption sucked, but the voice cast was perfect) Claymore Aria (not scarlet ammo) Every Miyazaki film Charlotte (Seriously, this one doesn't get enough credit. The concept is original, the plot is a roller-coaster and they even formed a fictitious band to record an actual album TWICE, just so the songs wouldn't loose meaning despite being translated to fit the exact same cadence and melody). Hell Girl Girls Last Tour K-on! Lupin III Gunslinger Girl Food Wars (despite having a few familiar voices, they paired the characters and personalities very well and a few of them sounded just like classmates when I was working on a culinary degree).
How does this apply to Japan? They have the same issue, but have a much larger pool of the budget funds while also being only the size of California as a country geographically?
I've been watching the dub of Spy Family so far, and it's pretty good, imo. There are a few spots where it could be better, but it's far from terrible.
I always thought Chrome’s use of ‘bad’ was short for ‘badass’ which is used to describe something as awesome. That way ‘bad’ can be sued for both good and bad instances.
since dubs is all we had when we were kids,I hate the most people complain, they're ethier not true 90's kids or the somehow found away to watch the original japanese from the 90's that no one knows about which I call bullshit on since there was no way to
Baccano! is one of those rare gems where the English ADR just cannot afford to cheap out on and still respect themselves as red-blooded Americans. When the Japanese write and animate a story that takes place in the US, it gets positively personal for that Texas ADR crew and so demands extra impeccable care to get the voice direction right. Even when it was not what the guys in Japan had in first in mind. It's where this show, Cowboy Bebop, and Black Lagoon dubs really enhance the watch over their originals.
The original title is "Kobayashi-san chi no Mei Dragon", but Mei means "lost" in Japanese. In other words, Kobayasi-san is an anime about a lost dragon who becomes a maid. Do you understand that?
I think we need Sonic x redubbed because for one in an interview, one of the scriptwriters never read the comics or played the games and the result of the dub is not good.
For me, I have to say the Bang Zoom dub is the best among the four English dubs of the CCS anime franchise, though as well I still notice a few mistakes in that dub while watching this content 😍🤩💖
