Tom is wayyyy too hard on himself. He absolutely nailed it in this episode. This is a weird thing I've noticed for some people: even for their best work, they still look back wishing they did things better when it was already great lol

Tom Welling only had four days to prepare and figure out how to play Lionel Luthor? And he turned in that kind of performance? Fuck the award shows, he should have gotten an Emmy nod.

Actors have to submit their own work for Emmy consideration. So if at the time Tom wasn’t as confident about what he turned out, he wouldn’t have. It’s a shame to see him be critical about it even today. We all would love to apply knowledge we have today to past experiences but this performance holds up and he should absolutely appreciate it as is.

The issue with tv awards is that they can only submit one episode for judging. So if the voters aren't regularly watching Smallville then they don't have the context of the previous 71 episodes to know how brilliant Tom and John's performances were.
@Angi-vh3wn
@Angi-vh3wn 4 месяца назад
Yes an award would have been very fair. Tom played the good and shy boy for 10 years, I think that must not have been easy. I think that John Glover himself had a hard time imitating him, honestly I saw in John just an imitation of a random scared boy, not necessarily Clark, I didn't see the traits that characterize him. On the other hand, Tom's imitation of Lionel is absolute perfection. When Tom is given the opportunity to play someone different, a character that he can experiment with and express himself differently, he showed that he was even more talented than we already knew and left us all impressed.

Tom played some villains in Smallville inside Clark's own body, this time it was Lionel Luthor and on other occasions it was Clark Luthor "Ultraman" from Earth2 or Bizarro Clark who escapes from the Phantom Zone or even Clark Kent, not as a villain but under The effect of red kryptonite. And Tom managed to give each one his own personality, even the look and smile of each one is very different. In one chapter, Tess believes that she is talking to Clark Kent but suddenly realizes that it is Clark Luthor, then a very slight change in gaze escapes him, his tender smile turns into a fearsome one that leaves her frozen. He stops pretending and his personality changes drastically in an instant. What an amazing performance!

They actually say in the commentary for this episode that they had been wanting to do this kind of episode since season 1, and that it was just going to be with a regular prisoner, but they waited for John Glover, and John, by the sound of it, was humbled by that fact. I'm glad they waited. It really paid off. And it's one of the show's best episodes as a result.

🌹🌹🌹 This episode rocks mainly because Tom Welling absolutely nails it! Obviously for the most part Rosenbaum's performance as Lex always steals the show for me but there's the odd episode when Tom really excels especially when he plays the villain even if he's under the influence of Red K. Don't get me wrong, Tom brings that pureness and innocence in Clark Kent better than most; it's just his acting chops are shown more in episodes like this, the way he takes Lionel's mannerisms and makes them his own so big kudos 👏

One of THE BEST Smallville episodes, and Tom's acting was AMAZING! He's so talented and we truly see his range in this episode. He did such a FANTASTIC job emulating John Glover's mannerisms as Lionel. Just brilliant. 3 Roses!!

Tom who played Lionel was fantastic, he was great. Tom was able to capture all the nuances of the character that wasn't his, even the most smallest, and made them his own. Changing the way you smile, changing your gaze and the whole attitude isn't always easy but Tom is very expressive which is why he is very good at changing his expression so quickly, and being very expressive is what is very important for an actor. I would tell anyone who still thinks Tom is only beautiful, to watch at least (and obviously not only) this episode of Smallville to understand that Tom is not only phisically gorgeous but also a great actor. ❤️❤️❤️

I know Tom is trying to be a perfectionist when looking back at the episode. He is looking at the smallest details that he would want to reshoot it. But to come on a show for the first four seasons and to learn from other actors; he really step up his performance when trying to replicate Lionel’s mannerisms. Don’t be so harsh on your performance Tom, you did an excellent job and so did John Glover.It’s one of my favourite episodes of season 4 that I could watch it all over again.

I loved this episode. Lionel entering Clark's body and causing a lot of confusion. I was surprised that Lex was the only one who saw that it wasn't Clark while Lana and Chloe and his own country didn't even notice. This episode reminded me a lot of the episode of Justice League Unlimited where Lex enters the Flash's body. Tom and Glover rocked the exchange of character interpretations. The Best.

My favourite episode of Smallville Tom as Lionel as Clark is astounding!
@LivstevMotherEarth
@LivstevMotherEarth 4 месяца назад
This is one of my favourite episodes period, if this isn't a three roses episode than I don't know what is. Tom's performance here was absolutely incredible, the way he had Lionel's mannerisms down pat was just sensational to watch. His gestures and expressions was all played to perfection. So it's interesting to learn that Tom would do some things differently, though I totally get that it would have been very helpful for him to have been able to have a chat with John Glover in preparation for this episode. Having a lack of that help and so little time to prepare though only makes his performance that more amazing when you think of it. So Tom, don't put yourself down too much, 'cause you did a fantastic job! The writing, the effects, the tension, the awkwardness, the pacing was all perfection. You truly get to realise just how much of a creep and pervert Lionel really is, with the way he hits on Martha let alone Chloe and Lana. If he was trying to convince everyone he was Clark, he wasn't doing a very good job of it. I like how Martha is the first to suss that something was not right with Clark, only a mother would truly know her son. She said it was something in his eyes but couldn't quite tell how or why. Still, it irked me that Chloe and Lana couldn't tell that something was off with Clark, especially with the language that he used. I mean, when has Clark ever referred to Chloe as "Miss Sullivan"?! Or uses language like "pluck your succulent fruit"?! Sure, there's been times where Clark hasn't acted like himself, like on Red K, but even then he wouldn't have used such language. It just made me sad how Chloe and Lana gave him stick for not acting himself when they have not been immune to freak occurrences where they haven't acted like themselves in the past. This is Smallville, after all. And Lana more so in the near future hint hint lol. That was the only thing in this episode that frustrated me, otherwise this episode was perfection. That riot scene was one of the coolest scenes in the history of the genre, or even any television period. And Jimmy Eat World's song Pain was the perfect song choice.

The difference between Jonathan and Lionel‘s transference was that Jonathan gained all that strength in his own physical body. Where only Lionel‘s essence went into Clark’s body, so Lionel‘s old frail body did not have to handle the stresses of Clarks abilities. I can’t say how his liver ended up healing though.
@jeffbrown8117
@jeffbrown8117 4 месяца назад
Clark’s blood has healing abilities. It was established in season 2 that his blood vial was stolen from Dr. Bryce’s office. In season 3 Clark’s blood was turned into an experimental drug that Lionel was using to help cure his liver disease (he used Adam as a guinea pig). In transference, Clark’s blood cures Lionel’s liver disease. It doesn’t track completely but that’s how I always viewed it.

I came to the conclusion that it had to do with a kryptonian soul inhabiting Lionels human body it wasn’t about lionel soul possessing clark but rather clarks soul possessing lionel that healed him but idk thats just a theory Edit: actually im not sure about this now because lionels condition was still getting worse while clark was possessing his body.

This was really a Tom Welling and John Glover episode and it was great. They both really nailed playing each other. It reminded me of Face/Off. This episode is so much fun! Glover and Welling mimicking each other is fabulous! They both did such a great job channeling each other's characters! Love it so much! Also, referencing "why Lionel was suddenly cured..." He was Clark... who is not affected by illness/disease, etc so with Clark inhabiting Lionel's body, - So as Clark, Lionel's body automatically healed completely. Then when they transformed back, it left Lionel sickness-free. My 2 Cents :)

I think the reason John's liver was healed had something to do with his essence having mixed somewhat with Clark's, getting infused with a tiny element of his power, just enough to heal him. Or maybe it was the stone he used to transfer them.

“Pluck your succulent fruit” was legendary lol. Definitely a season and overall series highlight. Tom Welling did a fantastic job channeling John Glover’s usual performance as Lionel, to give us the elder Luthor in Clark’s body. Though I gotta say that Glover did a great job as well. The scene he has with Martha in the prison (that sounds like the star of a completely different movie lol), and he recounts Clark’s childhood memory, for whatever reason always gets me low-key emotional lol. Great ep!

The way Annette sells the scene makes it work so well. If she was just more calmly like "oh! it is you!" the story would've sounded more ridiculous and melodramatic, but she responds with such intensity - as you should, if you discover your son is trapped in a murderer tycoon bastard's body - it's a total tearjerker!

Big difference between Jonathan Kent's body getting Kryptonian powers and Lionel Luthor's body being inhabited by (what I'll call) Clark's essence. "Transference" definitely 1 or 2, but "Run" is among a host of other "quite good" ones to me: "Pariah." Game changer in multiple ways. "Blank" flies under the radar but I think it's great. Tons of people love "Onyx" but overrated IMO. "Spirit" is so bad it's good - and has the best line ever on _Smallville._ It's funny Tom pre-emptively shitting on "Jinx" - "let's see if Al & Miles even remember it." It may be firmly middle-of-the-road freak of the week, but it has the MOST memorable super speed scene of all time. Plus an interesting Lex reveal. I bet they remember it. The cool thing was when Clark tried to mend things with his friends due to Lionel's behavior (as Clark), the only person that forgave him was Lex... Granted it's understandable why Lana and Chloe wasn't trying to hear Clark's excuses, however, this brotherhood between Lex and Clark is something that has really carried this show throughout its peak years 😁... I'm glad Ryan recapped his previous statement about not liking characters acting out of character, I wasn't sure if I was blowing those comments out of proportion. And even more glad this was an exception to that policy :) The back pat is hilarious, very impressed that came from Tom!

Love this podcast and y’all. One thing that I noticed during the body switch that a green light came from Lionel and an orange light came from Clark. Both John and Tom gave brilliant performances in this episode. I love how they did each other’s nuances. Tom did a great job playing creepy Lionel and John brought a softness. I love the Edgar character. I enjoyed seeing Margo character back on in this episode. I also noticed that on the stone was the same symbol that is on Lana’s back. I like how water equals transference. Annette gave a great performance. I like how Lex asks what did your dad say to me after the accident. I noticed how Lionel changed at the end of this episode.

You see how Tom always highlights all the smallest nuances of the scenes, dialogues and characters, even in the voices and looks. Likewise he managed to capture all the nuances of Lionel's character and make it his own. Tom is a very deep guy and he is a perfectionist and like any perfectionist he is very critical of himself. I wish you were less critical and hard on yourself Tom because you undoubtedly deserve all the wonderful compliments you receive. You are great and I love you so much. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes! I love that whole reaction haha. I actually feel like the guys missed some themes in that scene in 2 ways: First, they think Lionel's being creepy (and he is, for sure), but he starts the scene ANNOYED and wanting her to go away. It's only when she keeps pressing him that he changes direction and goes "fine, you want me to be jealous of your stupid little high school drama, HERE I AM." Second, they think Lana is at her "strongest" here, but...she literally came over to prod Clark about not being more perturbed about what he saw. Needy much?

It makes perfect sense that Jonathan’s heart would suffer after his body was granted Kryptonian powers for a day to bring Clark home. However, Lionel’s body was filled with Clark’s pure spirit, but not Kryptonian physical abilities that would tax his body the same way they did with Jonathan.

35:41 established in Season 2 that Clark’s blood vial was stolen. Season 3… it was then used by Lionel to create a cure for Lionel’s liver disease. Season 4, Lionel’s soul is IN clark’s body with Clark’s BLOOD, and viola, Lionel’s liver disease is CURED. I’m honestly surprised how much people aren’t tracking the incredible continuity between all of these seasons with THIS story line. We’re on 3 seasons now of Clark’s healing blood being a main plot point.

This was BY FAR the best episode of the season until this point and until the season finale (Commencement). For one thing, Glover was finally back. Secondly, the body switch ala Face Off was a cool concept that worked perfectly due to Lionel's imprisonment. Thirdly, both guys, especially Tom, did amazing with their new characters. In fact some of Tom's mannerisms were so good that even Glover would have been proud. Lastly, the Stones arc was FINALLY advanced. The only part I didn't like was the relationship drama. Especially the end with Chloe and Lana taking turns yelling Clark's head off was too much. But other than that, awesome episode.

If you're working on a vehicle, you're going to have a work light underneath pointing at the spot you're working on because it is indeed dark under there. So, it is believable that there would have been a light source underneath the tractor.

Meanest thing Lionel has ever done haha. Revenge worse than death. It was nice of Chloe to just recommend psychiatric help later. After all of Clark's "episodes", especially that summer in Metropolis, I really would've assumed he would've just gone with a combination of relapsing drug addiction plus occasionally-severe schizophrenia, and his friends can accept his struggles or not :P

2 important things to note 1.) The reason Jonathan has been hurt by the “powers” and Lionel wasn’t is because Lionel was just in Clark’s body while Jonathan temporarily held the powers in his own human body which is not meant to withstand them. 2.) You can essentially separate Lionel’s character arch into two different segments with this episode being the middle point. Up until now he was truly an evil man but the “transference” not only healed his liver but whatever darkness was in him as well. From this point on he is actually a pure and good character for the rest of the show even though no one believes that he has “changed”.

I was actually surprised at J. P. Manoux in this episode. Before seeing it way back then, I knew he was a talented voice actor, so I hadn't seen anything with him in live-action. I thought he did a great job. Like Allison as Chloe, he made exposition fun to listen to, and I thought his mannerisms and little ticks were fun as well.
@jerodast
@jerodast 4 месяца назад
I liked him fine here too. Fundamentally the character is not super deep, so I don't see that he needed to go the way Michael & Tom were describing rather than the way he was played. I know him for roles on not one but two sitcoms where he plays someone who is mistaken for Moby, so I'm rather fond of him for having carved out such a specific niche in live action haha.

Transference is an amazing episode. Everyone's acting, but especially Tom and John's, is top notch since they have to play the other. I also love that Clark's essence of who he is is what heals Lionel. I don't believe it's Clark's powers that healed him since Lionel's liver never left his body, only who they are as people transferred. Not to get too religious but imo this is just another time where the Superman/God similarities of the lore and original intent of the character come into play. Clark himself, his soul if you will, is so pure that he healed Lionel's body while inside of him.
