Thanks mate, very informative. I did read that Quincy Jones bought AKAI in very early 70's and had a no expense spared, striving to produce the best of the best equipment. One of their best amps was 1971 aa-5800 integrated I read by 45 vinyl site who upgrades amps and writes that this amp was dumbed down. Their sw 160 are great speakers too, I snapped up a pair for 260$ people didn't know their worth, the guy I bought off had a pair of 6k$ speakers and sounded as good as these AKAI s, his wife made him sell cause if decor reasons.I also read that AKAI started cost cutting from 1976 with as 2250 not having pre in /pre outs, dials were plain, more ic's used, speaker wire terminals degraded. I saw this personally cause I own them both and the quad aa 6100 that pairs with 1870ss reel to reel. From what little I know AKAI was their best from 1969-1975. Not saying all I write is fact but that's what I read as I said. I'm in Australia and AKAI not respected like pioneer, mirantz, sansai etc due to poor knowledge of the people. Keep up the good work 🤙

Thanks for this, it's an education. Although music is important to me I'm not an audiophile, the prices always put me off in my youth. I would have been eating Ramen noodles for months after such a purchase. Taken what was said here as scripture it sounds as if Bose attempted to reach the crowd that was inexperienced possibly from feeling intimidated to enter the audio rooms or even the audiophile store from lack of experience or education, which I think is often taken advantage of there. They may even desire to learn but overwhelmed by choices. Bose approached them, instead of the other way around. Some may only understand sound today because Bose reached them.

Great video Lenny! Your camera works fine. Not sure how long ago you filmed this but I checked out his website because I'm sure I spotted at least 1 pair of Small Advents and they're not listed. Pretty sure I saw a set of NHT 2.9's behind those transducer speakers he set up for you. Those are my Holy Grail but I'm guessing they'd be too expensive to ship. I'm kind of glad I don't live anywhere near this place. lol P.S. Get a fitted hat...you deserve it.

Lots of goodies and treasures in there. Styrofoam speakers! I should get some transducers from Parts-Express and build a set just for sheer curiosity! Oh my mom had one of those Sharp Radio cassette players exactly like that except it was blue! I took it apart when I was young... and that is how I started my interest in audio!

Can you give us a hint kind of on pricing. To the best of my knowledge nothing in that shop would be cheap especially some of those nice vintage stuff. Was all the equipment in working condition?😊 Very curious about that McIntosh amplifier wow which model was it question mark and what date did it come from. To anybody that sees this you have to pay to play no if ands or buts or jewing somebody down

I currently own an SA1000 I bought around 1980. I also owned an SA600. As you probably know the pots and switches, especially the volume get really "snap crackle pop" going on when turned, to the point the volume will go off so bad it smokes the output transiter (2 power supply heat sinks (one per channel) in the 1000 and 1 in the 600). Had this happen several times with that SA600 and the guy I had try to fix that problem was unsuccessful in cleaning the pots and switches where they worked correctly. Sadly I gave up on that 600 which was a really good receiver when it worked. Like a dip stick that I am left the thing at the guy's shop and forgot about it. Then the guy died, the shop closed and I have no idea where my receiver went from there lost to me for good. The SA1000 that I have has the same issue with the control knobs and switches. With the experience I had with that 600 I didn't want to blow up my 1000 so I quit playing it. The thing has been sitting on a shelf with the rest of my gear for like 30 years. That sucker would dim the lights in the house when switched on! And weighs a ton!!! And would crank some tunes out like no other!!! Just about move the house on the foundation!!! I remember that 600 would get really hot when driven hard and I put a fan on it to keep it cooler. Question is, where can I send this 1000 to get it fixed up and get those knobs and switches cleaned up to work properly. I'm sure removing them and either ultra sonic clean or maybe there is some spritzer now days that can get them working. I really had no idea the value of that old thing. This 1000 is a brown face.

The Grateful Dead was buying Mac amps from all over the country to supply the Wall of Sound. According to the purchaser for the Dead, someone at McIntosh said, "So we put out this amplifier. It didn't sell and, all of a sudden, it starts to sell out all across the country, one day after another. All across the country! So we figured we had the hottest new product ever, and we made a bunch of them. It almost put us out of business [because they suddenly stopped selling once the Dead had what they needed]."

Hi Lenny, you should write a book. I remember the days "devouring" Audio magazine and Stereo Review magazine for the latest tests and information on Hi-Fi Gear. I grew up in the "development years" of the Philips' audio Cassette. Thank you for taking the time to research the history of these once audio leaders who eventually got eaten up by Chinese low cost production and company greed. It is sad, Peace be with you, Ciao, L (Baby "Booming" Audiophile)

Julian Hirsch was perhaps the best known reviewer in the 60's and 70's, for Stereo Review I think. I met his son Steve in Burlington VT many years ago, and Steve told me that his father was the principle reason for the increased popularity of the 901's. Bose set up a pair of 901's in his house, assuring him that they just pulled them off the production line, with no tweaking. Hirsch gave such a glowing review of the supposedly non-tweaked 901's that sales shot up. As I remember, he later regretted that review. As a former surround sound tech, I remember that the AM5 popularity was because of the WAF (wife acceptance factor). Real men wanted big towers, mama wanted something as invisible as possible. Guess who won? Well, Bose of course. And I remember the saying at the time "No highs, no lows...that's Bose!"

Shaub Lorenz(german quality) was the first tv in my family but even today the materials are surprising over any modern tv i´ve seen and it still works you tunned the channels like in a fm radio and as a huge screen maybe the first big screen ever, my grandmother used to tell me they were the first to have a tv and neighboors would appear after dinner like if they were going to a party just to watch tv at night in my grandparents living room,which is my room now in my mothers house or family house and because she´s getting too old she´s afraid of people entering the house from the backyard ,i remenber that never a door was closed so no working locks and i go there several nights to spend time with her and the master living room is now my room where i spend the nights and have a mixed system of sound with a smart tv(not that smart) and maybe half the whole week i sleep there and installed a new lock in my mothers bedroom,she´s in her 90´s and only complained that one white air appeared no other health issues, she goes to senior university and women with less 20 years of her think she´s the younger one, her air is like when she was young ,straight and strong but happens to all she´s not going to live forever, maybe she will live more than me

i still have in use a set of kenwood speakers ,huge ones bought in 1971 they have three ways and , i think they have four ways with a 60cm ,almost the doble area of a Lp record woofer giant one only 70 watts output(real ones) that with a Yamaha studio monitor ,horizontal one i get better frequency response and quality sound from a SA-9800 from pioneer, i used to have some HPM-100 but send them to be restored, i do this for a long time big speakers for the bass frequencies and a better sounding studio monitor on top for better mids and highs, those electrostatic speakers never atracted me the Quad brigade spent a lot on them in early 80´s but today all their systems look old and sound bad
@RUfromthe40s
@RUfromthe40s 2 дня назад
in saw there a turntable i had for 6 monthes from pioneer in the 80´s that is for sure without a new cartridge or stylus but a good AT cartridge they sound at least 1000 times better than any new Rega or Pro-Ject till 5.000€ both cartridge and turntable ,i got a P10 recentelly for my new modern system and kept one of the three provided cartridges and install there a Hana Umami red ,only because i can buy them cheaper but i notice one thing not all kinds of recordings sound good there, while in old cartridges all types of sound were played perfectelly and even the cheaply old built turntables are several stages above new turntables materials or assembly, that i researched since 2017 till today having access to the only hi-fi music store in my hometown that belongs since early 80´s to a friend of mine, he almost cklose doors almost 3 times since then but we told him ,if you close it no store will open and better days will come ,he also sales instruments and young kids when starting a band they go for the most known brands or more expensive ones that have three series of their instruments models, cheap, average and full prices highest quality in struments and there is also the most expensive range they call custom now with not som many models but the most known, i have a Les paul in white with more pick-ups than i used to have in a older model also have a jaguar that is black with wooden arm(original colour)then i have a fender precision bass and a musicman ,also have a tama equiped with ufip and zildjan plates and a yamaha with Paiste and soultone, the leather when changed the first time i prefer Remo ,this because my father in 1970 assembled a home studio with the best available at the time ,that as been improved since then, i still record Demos for new bands that i find interesting not many but enough to be always in contact with youth in my town what surprises me is that from time to time in highschool some bands do surprise me for the best
