Hey Josh, I have a question about expansion and contraction on a 6” k-style gutter that’s 80ft long. When doing the end cap expansion joint how much of a gap do you leave between the two.
Would you guys recommend investing in a generator for a brand new gutter business? Do you ever use them? I'm in Austin so it's not exactly comparable to your market, but just wanted your thoughts.
Absolutely correct re. rubber expansion joints. I made the mistake of using them with mitered corners around my hip roof. Expensive, a pain to install, and a 2-year lifetime before the rubber rips. Do NOT miter corners on long runs, cap the ends and let them float.
I'm not a gutter installer, but I've done lots of fine granite work, and now I'd like to transition into gutter installation. You don't have to tack the middle of the gutter two times if you have made a mark on the facia where your ladder is and marked the gutter at the same distance, then you can match those two lines and don't have to go down to check if the gutter is aligned on both ends and unscrewing to aligning the ends... Otherwise, I'm getting great value from your videos. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much .... these are exactly what I am looking for to move the new gutter downspout extensions out of the way on lawn mowing days! And the installation looks so easy peasy too!!
Reading a lot of the comments here, people seem to think that a DIY video should *not* be professional. I guess, as a DIYer, I want my work to end up as professional-quality as possible, maybe even better (noting that a lot of pro's are sloppy or cut corners).
This old house folks know a thing or two about construction work, but don't trust everything they say, one day that old man was demonstrating how to install shingles on a roof and the first thing i noticed was he installed the starter shingle upside down 😂 i had to take a screen shot of that.
I love that box downspout. I was blown away by the Box downspout with the open channel. Do you save any money bending your own downspout verses buying it?
This video was really helpful! We installed gutters this morning using TOH’s video (which was a great visual tool). But unfortunately when it rained this afternoon, rain poured behind our gutters because we didn’t install under the drip edge like you recommend. I wish we had seen this video before we started to have a different option!
What is your method for cutting the downspouts to length, appears you use snips. Can you give a detailed explanation and why you don't use sawzall/wheel grinder?
I'm moving away from truck and trailer for my gutter company into an E Transit. How do the tires hold up having all the weight of the machine and coils on 1 side? Also do you load your scrap into the van? Thank you
Would like to see inside of where your screwing gutter to facia, I usually put gutter inside under, drip edge, then on down spout edge where I put flow I put a strip of metal so water wount get behind gutter and drip edge....
Really appreciate the critique, a lot of good tips. I am about to put all new gutters on a 2800 sq. ft. ranch style house, so quite a bit perimeter. In the past, I have applied caulk between top edge of gutter and facia, but that could be trying to solve a problem that doesn't actually exist.
Great videos man. I watched your "How to Hang a gutter with one man" video and it helped me install a 30 foot run today. That video alone helped soo much.
Good emphasis on screws showing, pitch of run, square feet of roof per down spout, gutter under drip edge, and direction of flow for down spouts, the small details are significant. Thank you!
Great video! Is it standard practice to put tar or some other sealant between the shingles and the drip edge so there’s a seal that prevents the water from going behind the gutter? Wondering if roofers do that when installing new roofs
THanks for the great info! I have this problem and it seems to have been after I installed gutter brushes to keep large vegetation from plugging them (still require maintenance) but do you see a problem with using gutter brushes? Could it be interfering with the water flow?
Hi, is there a reason why the Lenox hvac cutter not available in Canada? We are starting a business soon hope you can help us find one or an alternative. Love your channel always watch the videos and bought all tools recommended. Thanks
I agree: something is wrong here that might be generational: woods are no longer durable and typical low cost modern fascia will NOT withstand the water it will be exposed to if the drip edge doesn't reach into the gutters. Modern materials have no margin for error.
I can appreciate your professional opinion but this is a DIY project so no such homeowner would have all the fancy machines and tools you use everyday. I would MacGuyver this the same way Tommy did and call it a job done. I called a gutter guy in for some simple repairs but he insisted on replacing my 30 yo gutters, which still functioned fine and in decent shape. Quoted me $3k for the job. I declined and replaced what I needed for about $200 + my time.
Thanks for the info! Not sure if your more recent videos are the same, but please balance/flatten the volume. I had it cranked up to hear what you're saying the whole time. Then, the music at the end blew out my ear drums. lol
Instead of messing with extra flashing, I took a tube of gutter sealant and ran a small bead at the top of the gutter where it meets the fascia. Seems to have solved it. My shingles are cut even with the drip edge and the drip edge is tight against the fascia, I think that may be the culprit.
