Hi, Im an amateur player who likes the troubadour style with just a singer and guitar. Thats really all you need, especially if you want to avoid sore ears. I grew up with folk music from US/UK from the mid-60s and forward. I play guitar, a little keyboard and some singing. Old inspirations: Elizabeth Cotten, Mississippi John Hurt, Guthrie, Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Dick Rosmini, Phil Ochs Beatles. Slightly newer inspirations: Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Wiehe, Afzelius.
Living in New Orleans I first heard Champion Jack Dupree at Jazz Fest. I've been trying to play/teach myself piano ever since... I was surprised to discover that he was at the Colored Waifs' home at the same time as Louis Armstrong... I have driven by where it was several times (it's long gone) and visited many of the graves of famous New Orleans jazz and blues musicians. I bought this album when it came out. This song shone for teenage me; it was my first step into accepting, not fearing, the old mild man I have become, because the fire still burns deep in these old bones. The power abides in the old wild men, Lord have mercy upon us all.
pretty good. I think Eva Cassidy takes some beating by anyone in the same vein though. The voice f an angel, who's version ov over the rainbow is said to be the best ever. Her Stings "field Of Gold" is sublime (even a friend of Stings pointed it out to him. There is nothing she couldn't sing, taking each one & making it her own. Wade in the Water, Fever, she sang covers & was so shy she had to be coaxed into singing live. Which she did at (Fleetwood Macs Mick Fleetwood's club) & LIve at Blues Alley. Ps She too died too young from Cancer, 37 i believe.
I've looked everywhere and I cannot find a single clip of this live performances. I've come across everything she did with Al jarreau at that concert but there is not a clip of her actually singing this incredible version.
This track has me on bass, Howie Wyeth on drums, David Mansfield on pedal steel. We were all in Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue band together with Ronson.
